I’m not mad at him for maximizing his opportunity- as he sits fit- and this isn’t sour grapes because o hated the take and rolled my eyes at every mention of him ever. At the end of the day I don’t get it and hate it for him- this is likely going to be the biggest accomplishment he will ever be a part of in his life (outside himself and the potential to have a great marriage or be a good father or do the stuff that really matters) and he’s throwing it away so he can gain 1 more semester of spring practice at a bottom tier P4 school or go to leftover Oregon State. I think these guys get a lot of bad advice and training but maybe he hits the jackpot, becomes an actual NFL talent and can point to this decision as the reason. he's not expected to play. He's the backup. standing on the sideline while Ewers wins the NC doesn't really advance his career. If Ewers is coming back, he was always going to transfer.
December 18, 20232 yr Achieving your goals requires sacrifice. Anyone who has fought to create or pursue something that was far from guaranteed understands the importance of doing everything in your power to increase the likelihood of having success. Time is against you as a student athlete, and even more so as a quarterback. He didn't train for 10+ years to be a backup college QB. He dreams of playing in the NFL. He should try his best to make that happen, no matter the odds. Edited December 18, 20232 yr by Atticus
December 21, 20232 yr I am trending towards wherever he goes will be a bit of a surprise. He clearly hasn't made first cuts with anyone, maybe we see a move now with NSD1 out of the way. Unfortunately I think for him that means QB2 at a P4 , or maybe QB1 at a G6 Edited December 21, 20232 yr by BigHornedLurker
December 21, 20232 yr The portal just opened and just because he isn't announcing everyone he talks to or every place he goes doesn't mean he isn't finding a starting spot behind the scenes. It might not be SEC/Big 10/ACC but no way every mountain west or AAC level program has a starter better than him.

December 23, 20232 yr Popular Post Maalik plays school. Great move for this young man. I hope he slays it and gets drafted.

December 23, 20232 yr Popular Post This seems really good to me. He gets a great education, school has low football expectations, he’ll have time to grow into the role, and he gets to do it with a new head coach in Manny. If pro football doesn’t work out, he’ll have a heck of a degree and alumni base when he starts to pursue real life. Maalik seems to make really good choices.
December 23, 20232 yr Duke plays their bowl game in just over 12 hours. If CFB were like pro sports he could suit up and play tomorrow morning. Best of luck to him next season
December 23, 20232 yr Good luck, Maalik. Associating yourself with Manny Diaz is inherently a questionable call but I wish you the best.
December 23, 20232 yr Does Duke really need him for December and January? I'd love to seem him on the sidelines throwing up the horns.
December 23, 20232 yr Good luck, Maalik. I will always root for you and your new school. Well, except in March.

December 23, 20232 yr I really only hate Duke basketball it doesn't bleed over to the school or other sports like Oklahoma, Ohio State, Notre Dame, etc. Hope _iaz hires a good OC and QB coach (or has already). He will get plenty of opportunity from the trapeze act forcing him to score.
December 23, 20232 yr Good for him. Amazing school and he can other develop and get to the show or make the best connections and get a great education that will help him succeed in life.
December 23, 20232 yr LOL at the prospect of two former Longhorns elevating the Duke program after the Elk left
December 23, 20232 yr Popular Post This guy will always be a Longhorn. He's unselfish and has been and always will be a person with exceptional character. The high academic standards at the University of Texas have helped him to get into a university where he will be successful on and off the field. I'll buy his steak dinner anytime, anywhere (preferably at VY's steak house).

With both the Duke alumni and UT alumni embracing him, his future post football life at whatever he decides to do is incredibly bright.
December 23, 20232 yr Awesome. Love that I still get to root for him. Edited December 23, 20232 yr by A-Tex Devil
December 23, 20232 yr Our guy is going to ball the fuck out in a conference in active collapse and display why he was rated 5* everywhere he's been. Mr. Murphy, LEAVE NO DOUBT.
December 23, 20232 yr Good for him. I hope he goes in and destroys whiny Florida State. I'm glad he didn't go to a former Big 12 opponent. I'm happy for him as long as his interests do not conflict with our interests. Would also be amusing for he and Manny to beat Mack next year.
December 23, 20232 yr Awesome. Love that I still get to root for him. Same, perfect scenario. I have a feeling he's going to be one of the better Duke QB's in recent memory, if not the best.

He obviously needs a system designed for a pocket passer with limited mobility.

April 22, 20241 yr Author I have a feeling Sarks system, play calling, and J Brooks were all helping Maalik quite a bit and Duke ain’t gonna have anything close Hope he stays healthy and balls out though it’s now or never
April 22, 20241 yr Seems about what you’d expect. He has the arm to make any throw on the field. Accuracy and decision making need to continue to improve, typical stuff for a guy that really hasn’t played a ton of football. I’m rooting for him big time.
April 22, 20241 yr Still glad he transferred because I do not think he is any good as a football player.
April 22, 20241 yr So happy for him. Best school. Best campus. Best connections. Best outcomes. He is smart enough to make it work for him.

April 22, 20241 yr I thought Murphy was just awful last year for us. Inaccurate. Afraid of contact. Panicky. He was lucky DBs on the other team dropped several gift interceptions. He didn't look good in the Spring game for Duke either. We will see. I have been wrong plenty. But I think it is more likely than not that he won't be very good at Duke.
