Tucci’s Southside Sub has an identical Philly. I worked on Medical for years, lived near Bedichek for years, only ever got the Philly, same same.

Tucci's is awesome. The chicken parm they do is incredible although only available like half the year.

It was a great spot for watching sports. We used to go there for games all the time. Sadly, it was never more than half full, hardly ever. I think they just got too big a spot for that part of town. I dunno. We were sad when it closed.

Loved that spot. Parking was their biggest issue. They were in constant fights with the landlord about the number of spots available in the lot. All of the Texadelphias in Houston went to crap as soon as Willie (RIP) sold it.

I think a ribeye Philly with provolone and grilled onions on a great roll is damn near the perfect sammich.

There’s a place near my office called Bella Donna subs.  A lot of their stuff is kinda meh but serviceable.  However, they have a sandwich called Brooklyn Meets Philly that is great.  Also their Ron’s Chicago Style beef is pretty good with the dipping sauce.

The best cheesesteak place in Austin is what I guess is now called Mile Hi Mos on Guadalupe towards the end of campus. I think it used to be Mighty Mos?

There's one in San Marcos too.

I used to office close to them as well and they had a good Philly.

Grilled chicken sandwich at Patsy’s was great too.

Haha I'd forgotten about Patsy's Cowgirl Cafe.  Still convinced that was a money-laundering operation, not sure how they stayed open so long.  But yeah they had decent food.

I had also forgotten about Ray's.  Man they had some good soul food on certain days of the week.

Freebird's may have been mentioned upthread, but do none of the locations have the condiments bar any longer?  I stopped by the one in Rockwall a few weeks ago, nothing.  Not even lemons for tea.  Plus all the tables were dirty and I had to get napkins to clean one off for my son and I.

I hope you remembered to leave yourself a tip.

No, instead I chose to tip them at the register and do their job for them after the fact.

You really tried to cook with this one

Are you the guy eating a Philly cheesesteak at IHoP?  Practically all of them outside of Philly North NJ are shit, made with frozen Sysco chopped beef planks on shitty rolls.  Or they ate at Geno’s or Pats in Philly which is like eating at Joe T Garcias.

in Philly I usually go to John’s Roast Pork store.  His cheesesteak is also one of the best I’ve had.
the best I’ve had is at Taliercio’s Ultimate Gourmet in Red Bank, NJ.  Made with their house roasted prime rib, imported aged provolone, garlic semolina bread.  It was $30 back then, gotta be more now.  They are all over Facebook.  Best sandwich store I’ve ever been to.

DiNic’s is the best sandwich I’ve had in Philly, do need to try John’s on next visit whenever that is.

Speaking of places that we're sure are money-laundering operations . . . that TCBY on the corner of MLK and Lavaca is definitely one, right?  I don't think I've ever seen anyone go into or out of that joint.  But it's been there since I was in college (which was a very long time ago).

I mean, there's just no way that place is legit, right?

That place is still there?!?

I looked it up on TCAD not that long ago out of curiosity and the entity that owns the dirt underneath it also owns several other adjacent parcels. My guess is they’re waiting on the right buyer or opportunity to develop it themselves. Given the current state of the market, I would expect that we won’t see anything else there for the next few years.

@Brisketexan (I think) and I discussed this before. We both believe that the entire parcel is under a bunch of ground leases. I know for a fact that the Greenwood is or was on a leasehold condominium at one point, which means either the developer has to buy out the individual owners or wait until the ground lease terms out.

It always seemed that, out of all the yogurt shops in Austin, that should have been the one that was the scene of a quadruple homicide.

So this came up before the Planning Commission in May and there's a 13 story, 168 room hotel planned for that parcel.  As you might expect, the residents of either Greenwood Towers or Cambridge Towers were the main opposition and attempted to make the case that a hotel there would be the straw breaking the camels back in turning MLK and/or Guadalupe into a congestion nightmare.

I say the same thing about Schmidt's in Bee Cave.  There's never more than 1 or 2 cars in the parking lot.

Would you say you’ve never seen a sole soul there?

Has anyone mentioned Portillo's or Beck's Prime? Those suck, as well as most chains. Chart House was once very good, then Tillman bought it. Most of the Pappas are still pretty good, but yes pricey. Razoos is like Olive Garden Cajun, not surprising they went bankrupt.

Ate there for the first time in probably ten years. Have never had a worse salt bomb than that. It’s like they poured an entire canister of salt onto the meat. Terrible food. Will be another ten years before I go back.

What did you get?  I got the grilled chicken bowl with none of the sauces so it wasnt as salty

They took a nosedive a few years ago.  I'm assuming private equity bought them out and did what they do to all businesses.

Hmmmmmmm....4.7 out of 5.0 rating on Google with 650 reviews.

And, they're halal.

I'd guess the overwhelming majority of their business is takeout.

I may go check it out. They have smoked lamb chops.

Some sort of beef bowl

I haven't been but I have a friend with decent BBQ taste who said he liked it.  I do like the idea of smoked lamb chops...

Haven't been to a Portillo's outside of Chicago, but the ones up there make a serviceable italian beef, better than average hot dog, and had a damn good burger. My co workers raved about their chopped salad and their chocolate cake. I was gonna hit it up next time I'm in Dallas to see how it checked out.

I don't eat at steak houses so I can't speak to Beck's Prime.

Schmidt’s is run by offspring of both Schmitty’s and Kruez’s correct?

No shit.  We drop $80-100 every time the 4 of us eat out. If there's drinks involved, all bets are off.

Add P. Terry's to the list.  Those are some mediocre burgers and fries. They're barely above McD's and way below Sonic.

This. Hat Creek smokes them. But  Hat Creek is $14 for a single Nike patty combo.

I had a Hat Creek cheeseburger the other night and it sucked ass.

I've never understood the appeal of Hat Creek.  It's marginally above McDonalds.  But we took our kids all the time.  At least they have beer.

So you did understand it.

P Terry’s is anything but mediocre.

Quality beef.

Fresh locally grown produce.

Hand cut real fries.

Too many of you have grown up on frozen fast food fries.

It's horrible. One time the brisket was 75% unrendered fat, the other time it was like a mushy pot roast. Never went back. I heard it is closing.

That turn to shit unless apparently eaten within 30 seconds of receiving them.

A lot of places cheap out on their transport methods (i.e., Styrofoam), which does nothing but steam the food on the drive home (looking at you, Raising Canes)

I did the same about a year ago. I remember thinking it was fantastic around 2000 or so and now it seems barely edible. Did it really go downhill or is just that I'm 36 and not 13 anymore?
