Was it Arthur Bryant’s? Because that place is highly overrated.

It was not. I don't remember the name of the place but it's apparently super popular with the locals. I may have blocked it out based on the sheer psychological horror of seeing brisket cut on the equivalent of an HEB deli machine set at 0.5 thickness (best setting for Cajun turkey, btw). I mostly remember being initially excited because the line was out the door and around the restaurant. Then, I got my food and to call it "a letdown" is just so woefully inadequate. Seeing the huge line and being excited was like being an aggy fan when they were up 37-10 against UCLA. Then, actually tasting the paper thin brisket and "burnt ends" was like seeing Josh Rosen fake the spike and hit Jordan Lasley in the end zone with 40 seconds left of whatever.

I had some brisket served that way up there, too. It was an atrocity.

if you go back, hit up Q39. That place is legit. It’s a little weird because it’s a sit down restaurant, but the brisket and burnt ends were outstanding.

"Every cycle is different."

Since the 2022 cycle forward, NIL and the portal have combined to create an extremely complicated landscape to navigate. Texas (the Surly/Burton cabal, the AD, Sarkisian and staff, big money boosters) have solved the riddles presented in front of it each time. It hasn't been voodoo or just following the same "process". It's taken a lot of collective buy-in and hard, smart work and some luck each time.

Hell, part of why Saban quit is because he couldn't model future recruiting cycles and portal activity into his "process". I don't know how much of the details he's gone into publicly about that, but he's gone into the nitty gritty on it in private, and he's become a plaintive bitch about it.

At some point during each cycle, something has clicked for everyone involved and Sarkisian has been able to close on recruits, the current roster, and portal candidates. You can find the moments on the timelines for each period, really. Whatever the case, each cycle from July 1, 2021 forward has involved a spring/summer period of complete fucking shock. This one looks no different. I think a lot of folks are currently flatfooted by how some other programs are initial handling ramifications around House.

"Past performance does not really inform future returns."

I think this is important to note for this board, largely because there seems to be a reflexive "this is how it always goes" notion from the natives of this forum. I get it, but I'm not personally subscribing to that line of thinking. Why? Because the dynamics of this cycle are, yet again, different.

Some of the money being thrown around by other schools, whether because they can (Oregon, Michigan) or because they're desperate (USC, LSU, Florida) or because they cannot help themselves and refuse to fall behind (Ohio State, Notre Dame) is fucking shocking. This is not a case of $100k making the difference. When other offers are coming over the top of yours by more than $1M for non-QB roles, that's just flat out new.

Don't conflate some of these situations with a collective getting or staying aggressive, either. Some of this is coming through the school and not subject to the same compliance. It's "rev share" money. What happens if what's reported to be 85% of $20.5M is really $35M because the program can just do that? I haven't read the House agreement, but what I've heard and what makes sense is that if someone is washing through the rev share, no one externally is going to have the mechanisms to see or hinder that, or punish it.

So what can programs do if that's the case?

Do it as well? Not likely. Most schools cannot. The $20.5M is a huge fucking burden to get to in the first place. Other schools are just not going to take that approach. It seems pretty clear to me that Texas isn't going to do anything of that sort.

Keep building through collectives? The burden has now been lightened for boosters at places like Texas, no doubt. However, if Texas wants to reach the mountain top and stay around there, they're going to have to be honest with themselves about it, much as Ohio State and Notre Dame are currently having to be as well. Will Texas? I don't know, but I'm relatively informed and still optimistic.

"Maybe everyone is just catching up to us in NIL!?"

I feel like this anxiety needs to walk away from the keyboards of this board, if nowhere else. No one is going to "catch" a competitive advantage. There is a very small handful of schools that sit above the rest in terms of access to capital and House doesn't change that. Texas would have to choose to give that up. Is that something a totally aligned organization and its benefactors are going to let happen? It seems unlikely.

I think it is fair to think that Texas is still surveying the landscape and not making all of the moves early, but it will eventually take action and flips and surprises will fall in our favor down the line. I also think it is prudent to realize that there's risk on in this cycle that either may not happen or the calculations will be wrong, with timing being yet another factor that could work against Texas out of nowhere.

"The current season doesn't really impact the current recruiting cycle."

One final thought around all of this is that the performance within the season now matters more than ever. The old thought above this in bold is now an old trope. Money being funneled in for recruiting and roster management is some of the same money recruiting to buyout an old coaching staff and to hire a new one.

Florida's money started flowing after they decided to keep Sun Belt Billy. If that flips and they have to fund a big buyout, there will be blood with that roster and recruiting class. If USC fucks the chicken again, they likely still can't afford to buyout Riley, but that obvious future need may well close off the NIL valve and lead to serious attrition even without coaching change. These are scenarios that will play out at multiple schools before the mythical "signing day" in December.

I think Texas is going to have another amazing year on the field, so it can only benefit from the carnage within the realm of poor performance and coaching hot seats and firings.

I very much suspected this was kind of what's been going on but seeing in put in writing by someone who actually knows WTF is going on is very, very heartening. I am very much looking forward to flip season (NO JINX) as certain teams underperform and/or realize that their mouths have written checks that their asses just can't cash

Also, I am GREATLY looking forward to watching Riley crash and burn (I mean, more than he already has) at USC. Couldn't happen to a better coach or program

Edit: I also think it's EXTREMELY important to note that our very talented, very promising, young roster has lost virtually no one of any real consequence (sorry Savion Red, you didn't count in 2024 and you don't count now). That is HUGE and is being greatly underestimated by a significant portion of the board. You think losing Kendal Guervil sucks? Imagine Ryan Wingo, Colin Simmons, or even Alex January transferring to tOSU or Michigan. Guervil (and the rest of the defeats, pending or otherwise, from the 2026 class, some of which may very well wind up being temporary), are pinpricks at most - and I firmly believe the end result will wind up being very, very gruntling to the non-doomer portions of this board

The game is "Is she hot?," not "Would you do her?" - those are two completely separate questions. I would obviously fuck prime Susan Sarandon. I have done far, far worse. But I just don't see why people consider her to be some sort of beauty. She's got...saggy eyes? Not sure how to describe it. Same thing with Betty Davis and Elizabeth Moss. Who I would also fuck but do not consider to be beauties by any means.

As long as we're very faithfully sticking to the topic of recruiting the 2026 class, I just wanted to say that you're a madman, sir, and I absolutely cannot respect your opinion on this (though I'm sure you have many fine, perfectly cromulent opinions on many other topics).  Susan Sarandon is and always will be one of the hottest women I've ever seen. Something, something, crawling crotch first through broken glass (or at least the young, unmarried version of campcrunk would have).

I think I've already said all I needed to say.

Also, any Twin Peaks fan who can discuss the universe's love for Dougie Jones is OK in my book, even if they are wrong about certain award winning actresses. May the White Lodge (or whatever that weird Judy entity living in Sarah Palmer was - if you're into that) keep you safe and happy

Yeah. Recruit thru the whistle. Hang around the rim. All that good shit.

But, banking on flipping guys, as opposed to closing on drawn out recruitment, is a dangerous game.

But the guys here said no way it would!

Texas has to do whatever it takes to win now that they moved to the SEC. You can't choose to get in bed with cheaters then play by the rules. The AD will become a laughing stock if they try to stay clean in the SEC if there's any regulations put in. They have to at least match whatever cheating the best in the SEC are doing.

Some folks have suggested multiple reasons for Texas’ recent swoon in recruiting. Well, I’m here to tell you that there’s really only one reason - NIL.

If this were just a year ago, and Texas had more funds to distribute, there’s little doubt in my mind that the Longhorns would hold the no. 1 recruiting class in the country. The reception Texas has been receiving on the recruiting trail has been enormous.

But, unfortunately, it’s not last year.

The House Settlement was passed and the recruiting class of 2026 must abide by it (at least some of the schools seem prepared to truly abide by it, Texas included).

So we’re effectively entering a new dawn of recruiting, one where resources must be allocated. Teams are jockeying for the best players all while the best players are jockeying for the most money.

About the only thing we’re assured of is that this will not be the final solution, this will not be the last stop on the recruiting merry-go-round.

What could recruiting look like in the future?

Some have recently suggested college football move to an NFL draft model. What a world that would be?!?

We don’t know what the future holds. But for now, you have to play the cards you’re dealt.

Texas is recruiting the nation’s best players all while Texas already fields one of the nation’s best rosters at a cost well above the House Settlement cap.

The question must be asked: would you rather keep Ryan Wingo next year or take a highly ranked high school receiver? Something’s got to give.

Now, I want to add this. The sky is not falling. Far from it. Texas will still simultaneously construct an elite roster and an elite recruiting class. Of that, I have no doubt.

But at times, it’s going to feel and look different than what we saw in the anything-goes NIL era.

Fong with some intel that I like

Spoiler

Led by five-star quarterback Dia Bell, Texas has Rival’s No. 16 ranked recruiting class at this point in the summer but aim to go on another heater in the near future.

Rivals has the latest buzz regarding the Longhorns and many of their top targets in the 2026 class.

Confidence is high on the offensive line

Mansfield (Texas) Lake Ridge five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo locked in his commitment date for July 4 and Texas is looking strong for fireworks. The Burnt Orange have long been considered the favorite for the coveted in-state, point-of-attack player who has also strongly considered Ohio State among others. The Buckeyes have been the biggest challenger but the intel still favors Hook Em.

Fort Worth (Texas) North Crowley blue-chipper and the nation’s No. 2 interior offensive lineman John Turntine will also announce his college plans on July 4 and a source with knowledge of the recruitment believes the Longhorns also continue to set the pace. Turntine has given a hard look to Stanford, Michigan and Texas A&M, but Steve Sarkisian and his program have been a leader for the entire process.

Ojo is the nation’s No. 3 offensive tackle and No. 6 prospect overall. Turntine is the No. 43 overall player in the land.

Three more Texas is considered the leader for

Huntersville (NC) William Amos Hough four-star cornerback Samari Matthews has a July 11 decision date. A spring visit to Austin and then the official visit in June saw the Longhorns rise to No. 1. South Carolina is the biggest challenger but it will take a big move to beat Texas at this point.

Matthews is the nation’s No. 9 cornerback and No. 70 prospect overall.

Temple (Texas) High four-star edge rusher Jamarion Carlton will make his college announcement on July 10 and it would be a huge surprise if he ended up somewhere other than Texas. Carlton checks in as the No. 8 edge rusher and No. 44 player overall.

Katy (Texas) Mayde Creek four-star linebacker Kosi Okpala will announce his college plans on July 3 at 10 a.m. on the On3 Recruits YouTube Channel. The Longhorns are considered the heavy favorite.

Okpala is the No. 19 linebacker and No. 283 prospect overall.

Texas has been rising for four-star linebacker

Long considered a lean to Tennessee, Texas has been moving up the ladder for Marietta (Ga.) Kell four-star linebacker Brayden Rouse. At one point Rouse also strongly considered Alabama and Michigan but down the stretch the Longhorns have become the biggest threat to the Vols.

Don’t be surprised if Rouse comes off the board this weekend.

More big fish the Longhorns are still battling for

It starts with top-ranked linebacker Tyler Atkinson. The five-star out of Loganville (Ga.) Grayson said over the weekend he wants to commit sometime this month. Georgia has always been one of the favorites. Texas has come on strong. Oregon and Clemson round out the contenders.

Fort Myers (Fla.) High four-star defensive lineman Kendall Guervil is trending toward Florida heading into his commitment announcement on July 2 but the dialogue has not stopped with the Longhorns. It would be a surprise if it’s not the Gators, but UT isn’t going down without a fight.

Texas is on the gas for the nation’s No. 3 cornerback Davon Benjamin and is a legit contender, alongside Oregon and Michigan.

The Longhorns definitely want to sign another receiver in this 2026 class. As they look for senior risers this fall, one name that will never leave the board is LSU commit Jabari Mack. The Longhorns had momentum with Mack early in the year before he popped for the Tigers.

Dialogue continues with the likes of receiver Jalen Lott, defensive lineman Bryce Perry-Wright, edge Jake Kreul and tight end Heze Kent.

In that we tend to be a little cautious off the line with each of these new NIL stages before getting our ducks in a row and pulling a great class?

And yet Texas operates like a pussy while others continue to push boundaries.

Push boundaries like creating the nation's biggest and best NIL collective, spending more in NIL than everyone else in the nation, while killing the portal and ending with the #1 recruiting class in the nation, LITERALLY LAST YEAR? Other schools are pushing those kinds of boundaries? Oh wait, some 17 year olds made non binding decisions based on absurd potential numbers before fall camp has even started and you for some unknown reason let that ruin your entire mental state...but oh, ah yes, Texas and their vaginal tendencies.

Stefan Krajisnik: Ohio State football is set to play within the rules of the new NIL era. Will its rivals do the same?

Quote

The House settlement, which went into effect Tuesday, is aimed at bringing stability to a world of college athletics known for chaos. As Ohio State athletics director Ross Bjork has repeatedly said, clarity has been delivered. Rules are implemented in areas that seemed lawless during the short name, image and likeness era prior to the settlement’s approval.

One aspect of the approval has come with scrutiny, though, and it’s been a talking point across social media and message boards during a busy time in the college football recruiting cycle. Third-party NIL and how it will be policed during this new era remains hazy. Ohio State, as Bjork noted during an 80-minute press conference last month, is prepared to follow the rules outlined in the House settlement. “There’s a lot of durability built into this that wasn’t necessarily there before,” Bjork said.

The cap for what schools can pay directly to athletes is clear: each athletic department can share up to $20.5 million in revenue, with free reign to divide the money as it pleases. As it pertains to third-party NIL, rules are defined but questions linger. The House settlement comes with the implementation of a clearinghouse, dubbed “NIL Go,” which is run by Deloitte to help the College Sports Commission (a new enforcement entity).

Any third-party NIL agreement of $600 or more must be approved through the clearinghouse. The goal is to determine legitimacy of deals while creating fair market value. Essentially, boosters and collectives can no longer dish out as much money as they want to players just because they can. If an athlete is to earn third-party NIL money, there needs to be a legit purpose — a company paying a player and said player advertising the brand, doing autograph sessions, etc.

Will schools adhere to guidelines if the rules seem difficult to actually enforce? Will punishments actually be handed out if needed? Will lawsuits stem from third-party NIL deals deemed to be illegitimate? Bjork doesn’t think it should be an issue. “The rules of engagement are actually not that complicated when you think about it,” he said.

While Bjork’s stance on following the rules is clear, Michigan has had impressive success on the recruiting trail. The two events happening almost simultaneously has caused a stir among the OSU faithful. Ohio State, which still owns the fifth-ranked 2026 recruiting class, landed just two top-250 players in June. Michigan landed seven such players in the month.

Front-loading has been a trend across the sport, with Opendorse processing more than $20 million in payments to athletes on Monday — the final day before third-party deals had to go through the clearinghouse. Will more loopholes follow during the House settlement? Will the old ways of under-the-table money in college football rear its head? Or, will teams just decide to allocate money differently?

“There’s a lot of studies on this,” Bjork said. “NBA basketball ... they load up on three players and the rest are way below average. How do programs do that? Do they load up on 10 players at key positions? All of this is going to really, really be a thoughtful process.” Ohio State has turned to analytics to determine positional value. The Buckeyes also added defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, who has an extensive NFL background, to the coaching staff. His experience is expected to provide insight into managing a salary cap.

Ultimately, the right approach will prove itself over time — as will the sternness of the third-party NIL enforcement. Ohio State’s approach is to follow the rules outlined, which could still be favorable for a college town located in a relatively large market. “Ohio State football is a built-to-last championship brand,” Bjork said. “That’s not going away.”

I was informed earlier in the tread that all of this is unpossible.

Kid's highschool mascot is The Longhorns and school colors are black and burnt orange. Put him in the calculator.

I am just relieved I got caught up to speed the last twenty four hours and another elite recruit has not chosen to go to another school instead of Texas in that time.   I mean we may be close with Ojo based on $9.95 bullshit, but it hasn't happened yet.

You failed to mention discussions of whether the Woodlands is part of Houston.
