(Justin Wells) "It's just a better environment and better culture”: Texas five-star flip James Johnson talks big decision

Quote

After landing five-star Tyler Atkinson earlier in the day on Tuesday, things seemed too quiet on the recruiting front. But behind the scenes, Kenny Baker and the Longhorns were working to flip 2026 Georgia DT commit James Johnson who pulled the trigger on Tuesday evening and flipped to Texas.

The 6-foot-2.5, 285-pound Miami (Fla.) Northwestern five-star DT spoke to Inside Texas after his big move. “It feels good to be a Longhorn,” Johnson told IT. What was it about Texas that made the Sunshine State product flip his commitment only 18 days after giving Georgia a verbal pledge? “It’s just a better environment and better culture,” said Johnson. “Hook’Em!”

Johnson took two trips to Austin in 2025. One was in April for a Spring scrimmage, the other was his official visit in June.  Johnson loves the opportunity to play early in Austin. That’s why he’s preparing to graduate early. “Yessir, I will be an early enrollee,” Johnson said. His pledge helped the Longhorns climb to No. 6 in the Rivals recruiting rankings for 2026.

And the Horns might not be finished. Texas is squarely in the mix for Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna Prep five-star RB Derrek Cooper, who is set to announce his decision on Sunday, July 20th. Johnson is the No. 42 rated prospect, No. 1 rated defensive lineman, and No. 8 player in Florida for the Class of 2026, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.

Bell ain’t going anywhere. Johnson flipping again would cost someone a ton of money sounds like. Cooper will probably be a fight yea.

Def not worried about Bell

Mostly Johnson and Cooper.  Johnson was committed for all of like 2/3 weeks before he flipped.

Funny how they tend to gravitate to he who offers them the most money. Sort of like Texas and Georgia and California recruits

Pat McAfee is the college football version of Aaron Rodgers and Joe Rogan. He's for dumb-as-shit 20-something white man-children who all think they're "alphas", swear by the carnivore diet, and couldn't find a clitoris if you expanded it ten-fold and provided GPS.

Given that the food discussions on surly revolve entirely around chicken fried steak, brisket, chili and the like, I'm guessing about 90% of the users here LARP as obligate carnivores. Y'all need to eat your vegetables or this place will be a ghost town in a few years.

Also, you can now throw Dave Portnoy into the above category.

Ryan Glasspiegel: Fox Sports Nearing Deal for Dave Portnoy on ‘Big Noon,’ Barstool on FS1

Quote

Fox Sports is poised to make another big bet on Big Noon. The network is nearing an expansive deal with Barstool Sports founder and social media personality Dave Portnoy that would include him appearing on its college football pregame show. The deal would also involve Barstool content being featured on FS1, sources told Front Office Sports. The deal has not been finalized, and a Fox Sports spokesperson declined to comment.

Fox introduced its Big Noon college football window in 2019. Traditionally, all the best college football games had been stacked in windows later in the afternoon and evening. Seeing the annual ratings success of Michigan–Ohio State, Fox posited that it could garner higher viewership for its top Big Ten or Big 12 game of the week by programming it against lesser competition from rival networks. At the same time, it launched the Big Noon Kickoff pregame show to go head-to-head with ESPN’s College GameDay.

Portnoy would join Urban Meyer, Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, Mark Ingram, Chris “The Bear” Fallica, and host Rob Stone on Big Noon. Charles Woodson also appears on the show on special occasions.  Portnoy and Barstool Sports have always done well with the coveted 18-to-34 demographic, and Fox would be betting on this move being a counterpunch to Pat McAfee—who started his media career at Barstool after retiring from the NFL—on GameDay.

Portnoy is a Michigan grad and has appeared frequently on Fox News and Fox Business Network programming for the past several years.  Earlier this week, The Athletic first reported that FS1 would have sweeping cancellations, with Breakfast Ball, The Facility, and Speak coming to an end. Barstool content is expected to fill some of this FS1 airtime, likely via a licensing agreement.

Details were not immediately available about which Barstool personalities will be included for this deal, or whether this would mean a new show or existing franchises, such as Pardon My Take, get repopulated onto the network. The Twitter/X account BackAftaThis first suggested that Barstool personalities would be appearing on FS1.

Sure.  It never made a lot of sense to me to try to capture that demographic on a Saturday morning.  Especially now with cord cutting.

Unless Game Day was in town, I was hungover and still asleep until 15-30 min before gametime.  And after college?  Still hungover and asleep until 11am.

You bring up the crux of the matter.  A lot of us fondly remember a golden age of college football wherein the entire enterprise had a sense of history and decorum that gave gravitas to the proceedings.  There was a generational aspect that we carry on into adulthood.  That’s why it’s worth so much money, at the end of the day.

I would argue that dumbing it down to the lowest common denominator and featuring a bunch of crass, flavor of the minute celebrities degrades that very institutional sense of decorum and seriousness and will contribute to the erosion of the generational aspect.

I grew up in the 80s and 90s, so I would liken it to bringing Howard Stern and Andrew Dice Clay into the mix at the time.  How many of us would remember watching games with our family as fondly as we do with those clowns running the show?

Of course, I don’t know shit about fuck and I enjoy yelling at clouds, so take it for what it’s worth.

I feel this

To me, NCAA FB was always so far above NFL.

Your childhood friends went to your rival, so you carried that fun by beefing through holiday meetups back home.
The fans were more "upper crust" compared to NFL fans.
The product just felt superior - more innovation, the lack of free agency (until now), watching some random 3* kid from Tuscola, TX thrive.

Plus you had things like MACtion on a Tuesday night, Thursday night conference games, etc. that just hit different than your boring, over-produced TNF or MNF.  Rankings also made games more interesting - seeing something like #1 USC losing to unranked Stanford on a Friday night was better than anything the NFL was putting out.

All the things that made is special don't feel as special, except maybe the rivalry games.  CFB becoming a podcaster playground for degenerate gamblers and hot take donkeys is just.... ugh

Brady Quinn just has a knack for looking wildly uncomfortable at all times. Like he's been holding in a massive fart or worse for 10 years. I used to think he was so uncomfortable because he was covering for some closeted homosexuality. But the less people care about homosexuality, and the older I get and the more I've had to watch people be latently uncomfortable, I'm starting to wonder if the guy just isn't a straight up serial killer.

He's like a more handsome, much less slovenly Ted Cruz in that regard. I wonder if he has often ruminated over what it's like to be with his human wife.

Honestly, and I hate myself for this sometimes, but Big Noon is far better than GameDay. I don't mind Leinart, Quinn, and Ingram is OK, but I liked Bush better.

GameDay is for the lowest common denominator, imo. You can tell Saban hates that white heater wearing dork, Herbie only got under my skin when he said we were a cesspool (which we were in hindsight), but otherwise he's not too bad. I admittedly only really encounter McAfee during Gameday or some other thing leading into a live sporting event, so maybe that's why he doesn't freak me out the way apparently many people are with him on this board. Portnoy? I run into him on Twitter, or his stupid cronies, way more than my reading habits say I should. I see his fucking face in articles in my Apple feed as well. I have tried to mute and/or ignore that bigmouthed clown as much as possible. If it wasn't for low class, he wouldn't have any class at all. Fuck that show.

I'm no longer in the young crowd and I am not a lowest common denominator viewer or buyer. I view the guy as an addition to Gameday and entertaining. I never watched wrestling and I don't watch his show. I know for a fact, however, that I am not a user group of one. Do you know how I know that? Gameday ratings jumped by adding that guy. There's a reason they keep upping the ante to keep him around on there, as well. He's "widening the tent" when it comes CFB interest and viewership. Grumble all you want, but he's doing more good than harm when it comes to CFB.

Quality safeties can be found in the portal every year, unlike DTs and LBs, at least in volume. I'm interested in seeing whether they want to battle on this one or feel content to pursue other options that open up in their senior cycle and/or the portal.

that said does anyone really care that much about these pre game shows anymore? It's on in the background in my house until there is an actual game on.  Portnoy is good for them because these shows are built for clips to go viral and to have maybe the last 10 minutes hold the viewer for the following game.

I'm guessing you run into Portnoy because he's shoved himself into the business space, and then politics, as some kind of mouthpiece or authority on things. So he casts a much wider net than McAfee, who mostly stays in his lane. Portnoy is a piece of shit.

Best Class Scenario: July 16 edition

The Texas Longhorns are knocking on the door of a fifth straight top 5 ranked class after the commitments of 5-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson and the flip of 4-star++ defensive lineman James Johnson from Georgia. Steve Sarkisian and staff have the ability to begin the 2025 season ranked inside the top 5 if they win out for one of the nation's top prospects this weekend.

This class will not be complete by the start of the season, however. There will be needs remaining at linebacker, offensive tackle, edge and potentially wide receiver and defensive back for sure. That provides Texas with a high ceiling that could could challenge for a top 3 class by December.

OTF brings the latest edition of the BCS.
