No. 3 ranked 2023 recruiting class: It's a hit

That means at least 15 members of the 25 man class have at least a 50-50 shot to be in the two deep when Texas travels to Ohio State.

OnTexasFootball takes a look back at the 2023 recruiting class headed into the season.

I think Gerry's got LeFau's draft potential severely underrated.

What is he listed as?

I saw York’s fall measurements were 5’10”, 227. He’s small but slow, yet I keep seeing people listing their version of Tiny Dynamite as some sort of mid-rounder. Lefau is way better than that dude.

Benjamin to Oregon, and he holds up a jersey with the #5 that looks like an upside down “2,” so he’s got that going against him.

I’m sure we’ll “recruit thru the whistle..”

We all knew where that was headed, but it sucks anyway. I wanted that guy.

I don’t think 2025 will have a big impact on this cycle’s recruits for stable big time programs, but Oregon is going to be overrated this year. I assume they’ll start out 4-0 because they open FCS, Okie State, NW and Oregon State. Then they go to PSU, off, and host Indiana. Indiana wasn’t a fluke. They’ll be a better than .500 team and maybe much better than that. Their HC is legit. Then they go across the country to Rutgers, get Wiscy, off and then go to Iowa. Then they host Minnesota, USC and finish at Washington. That’s not a weak schedule.

Beyond that, they’re relying on Moore who is getting the benefit of the doubt as a bounce back after legitimately having one of the worst true freshman seasons in a quarter of a century at UCLA in 2023. They replace most of their OL, the RB, 2 of 3 WRs. They lose their front on defense and multiple guys on the backend too. They’re going to be ranked in the top ten because their name is Oregon. I can see an 8-5 season if I squint.

Having quarterback issues and replacing a majority of your offensive line is not a recipe for success.

I've asked why we should expect Dante Moore to be much improved now that he's at Oregon and no one has been able to provide any real sort of reasoning. Most just back it up with saying "well, he was really highly rated coming out of HS!" We've seen him actually play college ball, and it wasn't pretty.

I'm sure Will Stein is telling all the 9.95ers that Moore is much improved though.

The reasoning people have is that Bo Nix sucked at Auburn then went to Oregon and became awesome.

Gabriel had a good year last year too so right or wrong people see it as a QB reclamation haven

I think as much as anything Lanning is getting the benefit of the doubt. He's only been a head coach for 3 years, but he's gone 10-3, 12-2, and 13-1. He has an intense style which is appealing. I loved his pregame speech before the Colorado game, and the way he prepared his team to go into Wisconsin with the Jump Around song was pretty hilarious. Although the way Oregon played overall in that game was underwhelming, even if they did come out with the victory.

But then again, I'm a big Dan Lanning fan. He's a bit of an asshole inside the program in terms of he has a bit of Bill Snyder in him. If football isn't everything to you, he doesn't really want to have much to do with you. He makes extreme demands on his staff and players in terms of the priority they put on football. But for me that's not a bug. It's a feature. He's great with alumni in ways Cristobal couldn't be bothered. He sees fundraising and alumni relations as a big part of his job.

I don't know what kind of season they're going to have. I'm with CTJ in that I see a lot of holes. But I've also been underwhelmed with some of their personnel at the beginning of a season - last year particularly the offensive line - but they still find ways to get the job done.

I feel like losing Evan Stewart for 2025 was a big blow.

They have a huge resource in Phil Knight for NIL. They have a bunch of boosters along with him, but no one approaches Knight's impact. Even outside of NIL, he'll meet with recruits and players. It's a blinding glimpse of the obvious to say, but Knight has done more for an athletic program as a single person than anyone else in college athletics. But even still, they are extremely organized in how they handle NIL. They work with a budget. They prioritize players. They value the dynamic between keeping a roster and bringing in new talent. I don't feel like they're as allergic to character issues as maybe Texas is. They'll make exceptions if the player is talented enough and count on their culture to rein bad tendencies in. Not sure how that will work out for them in the long run, but it's definitely a difference I see.

I'll be rooting for Oregon unless they play us, so I'm biased. I could certainly see a fall off. But right now it's mostly a "In Lanning we trust" kind of mindset.

Worked for Malachi Nelson, right?

That said I don't see Lanning rolling with that level of dog shit at QB.

Dante Moore is small, not particularly mobile and doesn’t have a strong arm. He’s pretty accurate in the short and intermediate, so I think he’ll largely look alright since the Oregon offense is gimmicky and doesn’t require a ton of big time throws. I expect he’ll struggle against Penn State and maybe IU and look pretty good against overmatched competition. I don’t think Oregon is a real threat this year.

Taylor Swift is fine. Deep catalog of perfectly tolerable pop songs in different enough genres where at least there is some variation. In the constant struggle for the Spotify playlist with my two girls, she’s frequently the least worst option.

Anyone parent who has heard that Zombies movie soundtrack knows it can get so much worse than Taylor Swift

There was a time when I wouldn't have an opinion about this comment. But having recently spent 4 hours straight of listening to Taylor Swift music on a road trip played by my offspring tells me you are unfamiliar with The Who's catalog of music. The majority of Swift's songs sound like readings from a teenage diary. I was genuinely surprised at how immature her song writing is, even her recent work.
