The other part of the discussion about why play your high school games is pretty dumb as well. Some guys like supporting their teammates. Some guys like playing football. Guys who skip their senior year of football just because have a pretty poor track record of performing well in college.

I'm sure that many guys love their teammates and playing football. But this is business, it's not five years ago, and whether or not he plays another down in high school will have no bearing on how he plays at Texas. What would have a bearing, though, is ripping an achilles.  I'm not arguing that he shouldn't play, I'm just asking what's the incentive. Because if it's playing football with my friends vs. taking a chance on a life-changing injury, I know which one I'd do.

What’s the incentive to playing in the nfl once you sign your contract and get your guaranteed money? These scenarios are fucking stupid and don’t even deserve a response.

It’s my opinion that this is the general attitude held by people who often don’t have the drive to be in a position to make that decision in the first place.

A subset of this is, “OMG, he’s so old, why doesn’t he just pack it in? If I had his money I’d be sitting on a beach.” Well, it’s probably the freakish competitiveness that got him into the position in the first place that makes it so hard to walk away. But if someone doesn’t have that, he probably don’t understand that.

I think this is their concern, dude.

What real incentive does Atkinson even have to play this year?  He's made his selection, it's one of the apex predators in college football, he's going to get paid well ---- why risk injury?

To get better and win.  Always trying to work on getting quicker, technique, and experience which you can't do sitting out.   Competition is a tough monkey to get off your back too.  Usually, it takes several serious injuries post peak to convince players to hang it up, if they even get that opportunity.

Well shit!

Now that I know that I have access to a house in Tahoe, I’m going to get back up to NorCal sooner than later!

Come on by!

Maybe Atkinson didn't have a choice in sitting out the game. His coaches may have decided to keep him out of an early game so he doesn't aggravate his injury and affect his availability for the rest of the season. A season in which they hope to contend for a state championship.

Some actual recruiting stuff today of interest, spoilered below from GH. He's very high on flipping Malakai Lee, likely because Lee had given Texas the notice that he wanted to join the class before he announced. That led to Texas trying to figure out if Ojo was in or out. He said he was in and they let Michigan win the commitment. Must not have hurt the Lee family's feeling too much if he winds up flipping.

Spoiler

Recruiting: Sunshine State reclass?; in season visits

A part of the Texas Longhorns  2025 No. 1 recruiting class included the reclassification of 4-star safety Zelus Hicks (Carrollton, Ga./High) during his junior season.

OnTexasFootball has mentioned the likelihood of 2027 to 2026 reclass possibilities for the Longhorns in the 2026 cycle as well. One potential possibility is already emerging.

Miami (Fla.) Norland High 6-foot-1 four-star cornerback Kenton Dopson III is strongly considering trying to reclassify from 2027 to 2026. Should the Miami Hurricanes pledge get that done, the Longhorns will have serious interest. A person very close to the recruitment told OTF over the weekend that Texas cornerbacks coach Mark Orphey has been in contact with the family of the Sunshine State corner in the last week. Texas is fully aware of the reclass possibility, and is working to get Dopson and family on campus for a game this season. Orphey offered the Dade County prospect in May of 2025 while making stops in the area.

OTF believes Dopson and family will be in Austin this season for a home game with September 20 being most likely. Norland High plays a Thursday game September 18, which would allow for easier travel and more time on campus.

Texas remains all in on Lee and others ...
The Texas staff has the pedal to the floor on the recruitment of 4-star++ and Michigan offensive tackle commit Malakai Lee (Honolulu, Hi./Kamehameha). In fact, OTF will not be surprised if a Texas coach or two shows up in Honolulu during the Texas bye week September of 21-27. And OTF would also not be surprised if Lee showed up in Austin this season. This flip attempt is likely to play out throughout the 2025 season.

The list of priorities in the class committed elsewhere remains the same right now. Lee, LSU 5-star EDGE commit Trenton Henderson, Oregon 4-star++ pledge Jalen Lott and Oregon 4-star++ DB commit Davon Benjamin.

September 20 first big recruiting weekend ...
The night game vs. Sam Houston State September 20 will be the first big recruiting weekend for the Longhorns. Texas running back commit and OTF 5-star Derrek Cooper (Hollywood, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna) is scheduled to make his OV for the SHSU game weekend. That is Chaminade-Madonna's bye week, so he will get the full weekend official visit.

OTF also expects out of state commits Dia Bell, Tyler Atkinson and possibly James Johnson on campus for the game. Any in-state commit that doesn't play a Saturday game will be in attendance September 20.

Do does our staff like Ojo more as a prospect than Lee? After he committed, IIRC there was quite a bit of (sour grape-y?) discussion that Ojo is super raw, hasn't been great at camps, etc.

I know it’s the least likely because his decision seemed to be based on factors beyond strictly NIL, but Davon Benjamin is the flip I want to see the most outside of Lee.

I think he’ll be the type of DB most were hoping Jonah Williams would be. I can’t remember the last safety we recruited with comparable instincts and reaction speed.

I think he’s referring to Ojo’s fuckery during the process, rather than the actual question you asked, as is his wont.

Both Bobby and Gerry were talking about Ojo being a project all the way back to last winter. There were no sour grapes from OTF. I don't know what other sites were saying.

Texas chose Ojo over Lee because they were close enough in terms of what Texas wants at OT and Ojo was an in-state recruit. Lee is liked as a prospect, but whoever signs him faces the very real risk of having a Hawaiian who is not playing much for up to 2 years get unhappy or homesick. I know there's talk of his parent's moving to wherever he signs, but I don't believe that's what's expected.

What was it about ojo that led the staff to, in their minds, choose him over Lee at the time that they believed they were able to choose him?  Just elite physical traits?

nevermind, ctj was answering my question as I was asking it.

I hadn’t been following the training camp thread on the football board but are initial returns on Jonah not great? Seems soon to be discouraged about a freshman who was rated so highly.

He's been hurt most of the summer, that's the biggest issue and it's been said that he might be someone who has chronic hamstring problems.

It’s kind of amazing Hawaii has never gotten even just one top recruit from there to play for them, ever. Even Houston got Ed Oliver.

First, thank you. I appreciate the article. I assumed that was the case but it's nice to have it confirmed.

Second, Helobious is just doing his schtick. It's not a big deal. But I wanted to nip it in the bud before it turns into three pages of people arguing with him. No matter how bad the bait is, someone always bites. Watching people argue with him is a fun way to kill time during the off season, but there's actual football and recruiting news going on.

Third, man I really wish that Chang had worked out better as the coach at UH. I know "he's not dead yet" but his tenure has gone poorly. I remember watching those Hawaii offenses back in the day and part of me hoped he would get things going again.

I am curious how it would change if the Hawaii program was legitimate today; but a lot of the kids out here would kill for the opportunity to get paid to get off this rock they’ve been on their entire lives.

Well deserved. Sarkisian gets much credit (and rightly so) for turning the ship around on the field. But you don't get there without an excellent AD. And Del Conte has made all the right moves off the field. He's an exceptional troll to boot (Schloss, lol).

Its too soon to tell but the anecdotal consensus is that your opinion is true of most positions except QB and d line.

In my defense, this is what I was basing it on. It only lists 1 offer as well. I had no idea he was the top player in the state.

Still, getting the top in state player once in 25 years is abysmal. I guess growing up there you would want to see some place different for college but damn.

If we're sucking dicks, Kevin Eltife should at least get a reach around.

He's the best chairman of the board of regents for football since I've been alive. Tom Hicks was really important, too, but Eltife is in a category of his own.

I don't think the measurement of a chairman of the board of regents should necessarily be all about the football program...oh, who am I kidding. Of course it should be.
