We'll be fine at DL if we keep getting better each game. People need to accept that OL recruiting is 85% dog shit 3* recruits, but that 15% of the 4/5* actually do well, which is rare considering we only have like 5 combined right now. It's almost like if Flood actually recruited, you know, higher rates guys, we might actually produce an o-line that doesn't have a Connor Stroh taking up a scholarship. Also, Turntine isn't going to aggy. That's a dream for them.

Charlie Williams: Billy Napier’s Firing Could Put Florida Commits Back in Play for Texas

Quote

Florida’s decision to part ways with head coach Billy Napier has created immediate ripple effects on the recruiting trail. Several Gator commits could re-evaluate their options, and Texas is among the programs that stand to benefit. The Longhorns were firmly in the mix for multiple blue-chip prospects now pledged to Florida. If any of them choose to reopen their recruitment, Texas could quickly move back into contention.

Kendall Guervil – Defensive Lineman

Guervil, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound four-star prospect, ranks as the No. 18 defensive lineman nationally. Texas was firmly in the picture before Guervil committed to Florida. If Texas decides to recruit another interior defensive lineman not named Jaimeon Winfield, Guervil could be an option. Right now, the Longhorns have four defensive linemen committed in the 2026 class — Corey Wells, James Johnson, Vodney Cleveland, and Dylan Berymon. Still, if the staff wants to add another big body in the middle, Guervil could be it.

Jareylan McCoy – Edge Rusher

With his length, athleticism, and relentless motor, McCoy would fit perfectly into the Texas defensive front if he reopens his recruitment following Napier’s firing. If Texas chooses to pursue him again, the staff could quickly get back in the fold with the explosive edge defender.

Heze Kent – Tight End / Offensive Tackle

Listed as a tight end but likely to move to tackle in college, Kent brings a rare combination of size and athleticism at 6-foot-6, 265 pounds. He’s rated the No. 12 tight end nationally, yet his frame and movement skills make him a natural fit for the offensive line. If Texas looks to add another lineman in the 2026 class, Kent’s physical traits and upside make him an intriguing target. His versatility could make him one of the more valuable late additions should he revisit his commitment status.

Sounds like another project. Great frame to grow into as an OT, but we don’t have the best development track record on the OL. Another Goosby seems best case scenario.

It won't matter. Flood will be gone. Someone has to take the fall for this, and since the o-line is two FR, a RS-SOPH, two upperclassmen guards trying to play Center, and a senior, that's all on Flood for not developing what he recruited, which is almost identical to his two years at Bama, but he got to coach Doug Marrone's players, while someone else got to coach players Flood recruited who eventually transfered, busted, and had two first rounders.

Pretty sure Doug Marrone was hired to replace Flood, but don't let facts get in the way of a good narrative.

You are pig wrestling, which is fruitless, unless you're the pig. All you get is muddy, as there is no winning. Meanwhile, the pig enjoys it.

Even worse because there’s zero chance you’ll end up with bacon.

Are we at the point where we are wishcasting for a new OL coach? Because I have some thoughts and none of them are reasonable or well informed. This seems like the thread for that kind of speculation.

They were. JC Latham and Evan Neal. Latham wasn't even coached on the line because Flood was here and Latham didn't start until his JR year, and then went pro. Neal started as a FR, but as a guard. He was a FR AA before moving to RT where he struggled, then Flood left and he was moved to LT where he earned AA and All-SEC.

Three OL players from that 2019 class are still in college and all transferred, outside of the Evan Neal.

He only took two in 2020 and both transferred and are still in college.

2021 he took 4, and only one was drafted in Latham, while the other three all transferred, one to Syracuse,  one transferred/retired (Tommy Brockermeyer), and his brother, James is at his third school at Miami.

Basicallly erase the 2020-2021 classes outside of recruiting since he didn't coach them, and the one he did was for 1 season (2020). He gets no credit for these two. No credit for Neal, either, since he was basically his Banks, and then put him at the wrong position (shocker, I know), left, and then whomever coached next put him at his preferred position.

Flood is a joke.

Flood can’t keep his job after this. There’s just no way.

Wonder if first crack goes to the former Stanford and Michigan OL coach currently on staff as an analyst whose name I’m forgetting at the moment.

If he hires that guy then just be prepared for a 40 million buyout.

My point is less that Flood should keep his job and more that we should move that tangent to the Coaching Staff thread or the Texas O Line thread.

You're correct, I got them mixed up. Regardless, Marrone was stuck with shit, while Flood benefitted from Key's recruits.

True story from ESL class at Cypress Falls:

Hola estudiantes. ¿Qué tipo de literatura es La Iléada y la Odisea?

A big ass student in the front of the classroom states Es un poema épico.

ESL teacher: Excelente señor Lampkin. Serías un excelente estudiante en una gran institución de educación superior.

And that my friends is how you combine recruiting talk, lessons in spanish, and epic poetry.

Damn, there have been some tragic ass outcomes for several of the kids we’ve followed through recruiting over the years. Descanse en paz.

Get it but ... what the hell happened from 2022 (? I think it was with Banks, etc) to 3* projects now. I think a change is in order. This big human stuff doesn't mean get the fattest project guys possible that have low skills. And refuse to portal - ffs we have 2 guys that might work. Even Turntine needs 40lbs of weight in muscle - not fat.

What do you think the banks class looks like if there isn’t a coaching change at Oregon?

Our development is bad because we are usually taking the exact opposite type of OL prospect. I would rather us concentrate on lesser big but more athletic guys at OL than large fats guys. Almost every HS OL is a project.

I’m totally on board with Gerry’s line of thinking of don’t recruiting upper middle class white OL.

Everyone knows the elite OL makeup is two athletic freaks of nature, two MAGA, and a wildcard: either a coach's son or a former nerd that was bullied into having a mean streak that will cause issues later in life.

Sark apparently caught a bug and wasn’t able to make it to Junior Day today.

We’re just letting you know in advance of recruits saying they didn’t interact with him.

He’ll have some ground to make up this cycle.

3) Sarkisian is a ticking time bomb. This was all coming to a head sooner or later. He missed 30 days of work after the playoff loss, including the first Junior Day, which was fucking stunning and no commented from the AD/football side. It is probably time to go. A loss today and some people pretty pissed off about how this has all been handled by Sarkisian’s end are going to pull out the long knives with friendly press.

Sounds like there's more to Sark missing Junior Day than the "caught a bug" excuse IT threw out there.

Nobody could get ahold of him, missed 30 days, if I were a math guy I’d say 1+1=rehab stint.

Dan Neil, Gene Chilton, Doug Dawson, Lyle Sendlein, Kasey Studdard, Mason Walters, Connor Williams (don't know anything about Coppell and I think his mom is hispanic) so I don't think this is the problem. Who highly rated have we recruited for the offensive line lately from wealthy families?

So a handful of guys over 40 years? Proves your point? I didn’t say highly rated guys, just white linemen from upper middle class.

Well, there is our problem. Don't recruit scrubs and you might not have a scrub oline. Our highly rated guys on the OL have done pretty well. The 3 stars have been a mixed bag. With that said, our currently committed highly ranked white lineman from unknown wealth sucks despite the 4star ranking.

Honestly, I never thought about that, but it does make sense. If true, it sucks. I know kicking a habit like that is hard, and the added stress of being the HC at Texas doesn't do him any favors. From recruiting, keeping in constant contact with recruits committed or not. lots of smiley glad-handing, speeches, meetings with BMD's and CDC. A lot of factors are there that most people couldn't handle.
