Could be a good inside the 5 type running back to cure our redzone/goal line woes. Big strong battering ram type back we have lacked for many years, or at least since Roschon Johnson...we can use him as lead FB in certain situations.

Coming out of staff recruiting meetings held on Thursday, the Longhorns decided to offer three new high school recruits: TE Charlie Jilek of Portage, Mich. (previously committed to Minnesota) RB Jett Walker of Georgetown (committed to Minnesota) OL Kaden Scherer (committed to Stanford) Jilek committed to Texas last night. He, along with Walker and Scherer, are slated to visit the Longhorns on the weekend of the Arkansas game. While the offers may look sudden, they actually are not. The Texas personnel staff has been evaluating players across the country for months. Texas also recently offered Josiah Vilmael, a corner from Fort Bend Travis, who will also visit the Longhorns next Saturday. As Texas closes out this class, it’s clear that the Horns are relying on their own evaluations over that of the recruiting industry star-ranking system. It’s also evident that this recruiting class could easily push into the mid-to-high 20s in total. ** Are these new offers a sign of possible heavy attrition this off-season from the existing roster? Possibly. But not necessarily. These offers fill existing needs within the recruiting class. The Texas recruiting class did not have a tight end commitment until Jilek pledged last night. The RB unit has been hit by attrition during the season. Jerrick Gibson has elected to transfer and Ricky Stewart is no longer with the team. And the OL was long on the lookout for an additional 1 or 2 signees. ** Take a look at Jilek’s video. There’s a lot to like. November 14Nov 14 In Walkers highlights, he finds creases and hits the openings. Runs high but shows some coil and ability to get low when needed, but I don’t know that he’ll get through a college dline as easily. If he can catch, he’s a big target for screens and can become a legit receiver out of the backfield, which is where he maybe better suited. Can pick up blocks but again, remains to be seen against a large defensive end or other jumbo human. Doesn’t have that low center of gravity that scattebo has. Walker also looks to have a neck, which is missing from the human battering ram. Don’t think he’s a bad take and practice and scout team will give him opportunities to show where he can stick.
November 14Nov 14 Walker looks like he’s a nursing a hamstring or something. It never looks like he’s at top speed.

November 14Nov 14 20 hours ago, rvm96 said: Fine, I will give more examples that you speak in absolutes without doing 5 minutes of research. Georgia- Arian Smith was a top 50 prospect, redshirted, and got drafted to the NFL. Chauncey Bowens is a redshirt freshman RB who is the teams second leading rusher this season. https://247sports.com/player/chauncey-bowens-46111845/high-school-259988/ https://247sports.com/player/arian-smith-46052428/high-school-212826/ Oregon- All the skill position recruits for 2024 redshirted. https://247sports.com/college/oregon/longformarticle/oregon-ducks-ducks-football-redshirt-review-peyton-woodyard-244674465/#2588587 Auburn- RB Alvin Henderson is redshirting this season. https://247sports.com/player/alvin-henderson-46128181/high-school-273186/ So before we begin, I am not ranking TE as a skill position due to there being different types of them from all-around where they have no real weakness as a player at the position due to it being a scarcity and unicorn (George Kittle, Travis Kelce, Mark Andrews, Brock Bowers,TJ Hockenson, Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, Shannon Sharpe, you get the gist), blocking (Spencer Shannon), receiving but trouble with blocking (Ja'Tavion Sanders; Gunnar Helm), or unknown due to age and how they grow into the position (Jordan Washington - can catch, blocking is to be expected...a weak point). Great, so Oregon has Da'Juan Riggs, a three-star RB, #56 RB, and #747 overall, Jeremiah McClellan, top-100 recruit, #18 WR, and #86 overall, Ryan Pellum, not with the team, but we'll add him was top-250, #36 WR, and #219 overall, Dillon Gresham who was the #58 WR, and #407 overall, along with Jack Ressler, a three-star and the #139 WR with N/A for overall ranking. I was wrong that if you're above a top-100 recruit, you should play, amirite? Surely you don't mean that four-star = no RS, right? I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and say you aren't daft and know what I meant when I said no RS; meaning top-50-75 level recruits should see some playing time due to them coming out as one of the most highly touted players in their class. Does that mean ALL players? Of course not. But being that highly rated usually means they should be seeing the field year one at some capacity, even if for 2-3 snaps a game. Arian Smith was between top-50 to top-100 recruit, he was #44 247, #80 On3, #64 for ESPN, but regardless, you went back to 2019 to get his information. A single player. Good on you, man.- irrelevant for something 7 years ago for a single player, not putting me in my place by listing 5+ names of highly rated guys taking a RS. Bowens was a three-star according to 247, and I can't find a composite. We aren't going to just randomly pick whatever site fits your narrative, and since 247 does the composites for all sites, we're using their ranking. But if you want to just say 'well, ESPN and On3 have him as a four-star,' that would make the composite useless, wouldn't it? Obviously as a three-star he needed the RS, and no, he's not the team's leading rusher, that would be Nate Frazier, who didn't RS. He was a top-75 recruit and he split carries with Trevor Etienne, making him a co-starter as a freshman. Henderson was a top-150 prospect per 247 composite, and the #15 RB, which again, does not disprove anything. He's clearly not at a stage where he can even be trusted to spell their literal only RB, Jeremiah Cobb. After Cobb, it's two QBs, Arnold and Ashton Daniels before we get to another RB, Damari Alston, who has 3 more carries and 6 more yards rushing as a senior than James Simon, a freshman. So let's see how those stack up - For Texas and Oregon, pretty similarly, actually. Both have mostly all three-star skill guys with Texas having the edge with five-star Wingo ranked #32, but didn't RS, and Jerrick Gibson #79 had to play out of necessity due to injury, while Butler ranked #122 and did RS. McClellan was ranked #86, while everyone else was a very low four-star (Gresham), or a three-star, so those guys tend to RS since they aren't top-50-ish guys who usually play. For example - all guys in the top-75 in last two classes UF: DJ Lagway #1 QB #3 overall - played and got hurt Dallas Wilson #8 WR #50 overall - played until he broke his right foot Vernell Brown III #5 WR #35 overall - playing currently UGA: Nate Frazier #2 RB #71 overall - co-starter with Travis Etienne until this year (only skill pos player in top-100) Talyn Taylor #6 WR #40 overall - has been part of 3 games this season (this is how you prove me wrong). RS candidate due to WR room being senior heavy AGS: Jerome Myles #3 WR #19 overall - injured for season Terry Bussey #1 ATH #16 overall - played all year fOSU: Jeremiah Smith #1 WR #1 overall - we all know Mylan Graham - talked about above Quincy Porter - still playing, albeit sparingly. Might RS Clem: Gideon Davidson #3 RB #69 overall - has played in all games TJ Moore #4 WR #21 overall - played all games Bryant Wesco Jr #11 WR #57 overall - played all games You get the point. You aren't a dullard, you just want to argue for the sake of arguing. I don't need to keep going school by school to prove higher rated skill prospects (top-75) outside of an outlier or two get playing time at high-level CFB programs, whether they're immediate contributors or only get a few snaps a game. Sark is stubborn and has some fascination with a "trust tree" that apparently only we seem to use considering no other program seems to have any issues getting their higher rated skill guys game opportunities, regardless of quarter. They seem to grasp that if they want this kid to learn they need real time, against real competition during conference play. Peer to peer, not 1s vs 3s in practice shit. It doesn't matter if it's 2 snaps or 60 snaps a game. Edited November 14Nov 14 by William Bludworth

I'm not in love with the Scherer offer. He has a solid frame but he doesn't move well. We've seen how big a liability that can be in Sark's scheme. He looks like someone who should be a signing day flip if we miss on everyone else we want.
November 14Nov 14 Thinking out loud here, but I wonder if we are going to see more programs doing a 'stars and scrubs' like recruiting approach when building out their HS classes. For example, I see Alabama has 23 total commits and 9 players ranked inside the top 100. They also have 10 3-stars. That is over 80% of their class. Texas has 18 commits, excluding specialists. 6 players in the top 60 and 5 3-stars. That represents a good chunk of the class. There might be value in devoting almost all your resources towards the top-end of the class and filling out the rest with more developmental guys who won't command much NIL vs trying to navigate the mid/low 4-star range, where guys are likely to command more money but also likely to require some of the same development time as a 3-star would.

Basically what Ketch was saying today. With rev share, programs aren't going to pay good money for 4 star kids who will sit on the bench for 2-3 years. Money will go to immediate difference makers and the rest of the class will be potential guys who won't cost much and who are willing to sit on the bench to develop for 2-3 years.

This is exactly, EXACTLY right. This is the new model. You take 5 or 10 6'5", 240 .lb guys per year for very little money, tell them that they'll be given every opportunity to develop under top-notch coaches with a top-notch S&C program in a school that also happens to be top-notch academically in one of the top-notchiest cities in America and if they do well they will get their shot at the big time.
November 15Nov 15 Seems like recruiting is now going to be won on the fringes, where you can coax a really good player to leave money on the table from a mid-level P4 (like a UNC) to come to Austin for much less because you know, program upside and overall college situation. The elites are more or less gonna be “highest bidder” scenarios but not every player is going to automatically take the most money.

November 15Nov 15 19 hours ago, William Bludworth said: So before we begin, I am not ranking TE as a skill position due to there being different types of them from all-around where they have no real weakness as a player at the position due to it being a scarcity and unicorn (George Kittle, Travis Kelce, Mark Andrews, Brock Bowers,TJ Hockenson, Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, Shannon Sharpe, you get the gist), blocking (Spencer Shannon), receiving but trouble with blocking (Ja'Tavion Sanders; Gunnar Helm), or unknown due to age and how they grow into the position (Jordan Washington - can catch, blocking is to be expected...a weak point). I stopped reading anything after I realized you don't know the difference between 247sports own ranking and their composite. McClellan was #65 in the composite which fits the top 75 criteria you added after I poked plenty of holes in your made up theory. Arian Smith was a 2020 recruit so I stayed within this decade. I also learned you can't read years off a webpage. Chauncey Bowens was a composite 4* and I literally linked it for you.

It's just a shame that no holes were actually poked through. But have a good one. As for Bowens, his composite is he was #202, so that doesn't make him eligible for the specific criteria that he should be getting playing time early, unlike Frazier who is in the same class, but a top-75 recruit who co-started because, and hang with me here, that's how elite recruits work. But I'm also talking to the same person who can't even look up player stats to see who Georgia's leading rusher is because, like you said, reading is hard. Someone said that, and I guess it wasn't you, and I don't want to scroll up, so just take my apology and let's just put this whole thing to rest and say whatever. Cool?

November 15Nov 15 I haven't been keeping up with this current recruiting cycle because honestly the Transfer Portal makes H.S. recruiting less of a priority for me to follow. Anyways, seeing how the "Big Humans" strategy at O-Line recruiting got exposed this season... have Sark/Flood started to shift their developmental O-Line recruiting towards recruiting big athletes that you can put weight on instead of Big Humans that need to lose weight & get into better athletic shape OR nah? Watching UGA highlights this week & comparing the UGA O-Line to the UT O-Line, Sark/Flood should shift to this strategy ASAP if they haven't already.

To be fair, Flood has always liked big dudes even on his awesome Bama lines - it might be more of a Sark problem. That said, we're probably going to finally be all over some transfer OL.

Turntine coming in this year is actually undersized. The problem is more of a numbers issue. We are recruiting non-starters like Stroh and Wright and aren’t recruiting enough guys who can start. Lee, Martinez, Utu, and Roseborough were all fine prospects and we may get one of those guys. Meanwhile, we have a huge hole in the middle of the line again with a class that will have 2-3 starters in it. Basically, we aren’t devoting enough resources into the offensive line.

November 17Nov 17 Big weekend for us to not shit the bed and show the future players we aren’t a colossal fuck up. Let’s hope the product on the field and the atmosphere against the hated pigs is electric
November 17Nov 17 Kind of funny to see all the recruits/transfers many in this thread were adamant we should avoid (Reuben Owens, Andrew Marsh, Zach Branch, KC Concepcion) completely ball out so far this year.
