No. 17 Texas vs. Arkansas Visitor List

Texas is set to host at least seven official visitors Saturday for the Arkansas game. OTF has added 5-star defensive lineman Richard Anderson to the visitors list, after being listed as a maybe late last week.

November 22-23 visitor list ...
Brysten Martinez, OT, Gonzales (La.) East Ascension - *LSU commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 4-star+
Where it stands: Timing of LSU hire is key here.

Kaden Scherer, OT, Georgetown (Texas) High - *Stanford commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 3-star++
Where it stands: Texas is the favorite over Stanford with a final push

Jett Walker, RB, Georgetown (Texas) High - *Minnesota commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 3-star++
Where it stands: Texas is the favorite over Minnesota

Charlie Jilek, TE, Portage (Mi.) Central #AllGasNoBrakes
OnTexasFootball ranking: 3-star++

Richard Anderson, DL, New Orleans (La.) Edna Karr - *LSU commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 5-star
Where it stands: Who is hired at LSU is key here.

Toray Davis, CB/DB, Boulder (Co.) Fairview - *UCLA commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 3-star++
Where it stands: Washington or Texas, dependent on who and when the UCLA coach is hired.

Josiah Vilmael, CB/N, Richmond (Texas) Fort Bend Travis
OnTexasFootball ranking: 3-star++
Where it stands: OV's to Arizona State, Baylor and Arizona. Texas likely the favorite.

Note: Texas is hoping to get Maryland commit and 5-star EDGE Zion Elee (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances) makes it in.

Second note: OTF will be adding to the visitor list throughout the week.

Branch and Concepcion were both desired. Branch was pursued but passed on, Singleton was pursued but he chose elsewhere, we got Mosley who is pretty good.

The poor evaluations and subsequently poor valuations in the WR room in particular have been the most disappointing aspect of this year’s team.

Fuck potential unless it comes with a heavy discount for all that risk.

I don’t really have a lot of gripes with recruiting , but this team and this season definitely made me look at it a bit differently.

I get why Sark is slow and methodical when it comes to recruiting but I feel like it fucks us with big time recruits specifically out of Texas, then we have to watch them at Ohio State or Alabama.  About time we go all in, those relationships are already established with other teams and we’re playing catchup

For example I think of Devin Sanchez last year, now most would say we didn’t have a shot, but shid we didn’t give ourselves a shot either. We relate to the party and now we are in a position were we need Corners bad,

Mosley is the best WR on the team imo. Slow start because he missed the entire offseason and first few weeks but he creates the most separation and actually catches the ball.

Mosley is definitely the best receiver on the team, but he’s probably the third highest paid one at best.

I’ll be the first to admit I was super wrong about Marsh. But he had some real deal baggage. Maybe going to Michigan and getting some separation from his family has helped him lock in.

Not sure I could single out one position's room (on the offense side) as the most disappointing aspect of this year's team. They've all been shitastic.

Even more disappointing is trying to determine which coach on offense has performed the best.

Really hope Zion Elee & Jalen Lott find their way to Austin this weekend

Lol 24/7’s new update is really eye opening. Some of our top recruits didn’t just drop, they sunk. Turntine barely in top 250, cooper past 100, Wesley to 80, a couple other massive drops. Bishop went up and kosi is 58, but definitely no UT bump this year. Fuck

There are plenty of things to be concerned about, but this isn’t one of them.

Fans seem to have totally missed how much Mosley's absence crippled our offense early on. As soon as he returned, it was obvious he was our best WR by far. A lot of Arch's early-season throws might not have reached him, but if they had, there's reason to think he'd have caught them. Lose any other WR on the roster before him.

That could be better. For reference,  satya is the 180th top poster on this board.

Great….repeat…..great receivers make great QB’s….we are lacking that this year.

This has got to change…no excuse for not being able to evaluate talent….plus, you can’t depend on portaling needed recruits and batting a 1000.  Sark better address this or winning will get harder.  aggy, with their “success” this year, will get more donors to contribute, and of course, Tech is getting football serious…..with our prior year’s success, we lost two good coaches/recruiters and it shows….Sark can’t mess this up…it’s hugely important!

And is a number two on great teams. . I’m sure Sark depended on Wingo but we have to go get a WR#1 .

Man just think about last year we had Bond (before the injury), Golden on opposite sides with a veteran O-Line and Helm (2nd round draft pick) at TE. Damn that injury for Baxter but Sark really set Quinn up for success and was probably the reason he went soft this fall camp with that OTA bullshit.

 he has learn from this and to do the same for Arch next season .

I'm not saying your overall point is invalid, but it seems we view player rankings through a lens of current success on the field.

"Offensive linemen are the most difficult to project at the next level. Coaches know more than the services."

We do well on the field; the coaches are evaluatin' motherfuckers.

We do poorly on the field; why can't we recruit the higher-rated OL.?

The OL on the field is performing better than, gasp!, earlier in the year. They were all new. There are other criticisms about the godawful penalties and mismatched scheme that seem valid, but, with us, it's everything is great or everything is bad. Sooo dramatic.

I mean he likely dislocated the thumb on his right hand in the Vanderbilt game.

Took Bobby two weeks to get his. So just in time to start prepping for the TaxSlayer Bowl.

Fine but this makes the 2nd time in 3 years that Sark is playing an injured WR over several highly recruited and demonstrably productive other WRs (e.g. Livingstone got limited looks at Georgia while Wingo was watching half of his targets go through his hands).  Same with Worthy, only we had fewer options then.  And we can't say it's because of Wingo's other attributes like blocking, because he is poor at that.  No reason we couldn't run out Mosley, Moore, and Livingstone and if we need a 4th and 5th we have a deep bench.  Sark's stubbornness hits again.  Sarkenness.

I am no expert in recruiting, but it seems like we are starting to recruit a lot more 3-star level players and the other schools recruiting them are not the Top 10ish elite football schools but the Baylor's, Utah's, Oklahoma State's of the world.  Yeah, yeah, the coaches are better at evaluating players than the recruiting services and they will coach them up, but this is a recipe for failure that we have all seen before here. When the Bama's, Georgia's, Ohio State's of the world keep loading up on 5 stars and high 4 stars (and God forbid the Aggies start this with their momentum) and we have low 4 stars and high 3 stars everyone will be screaming why do our players look slower and weaker than those other teams when we play them.

Ohio State currently has eight three stars committed. Alabama has nine. Georgia has eight. We have seven.

We have three five stars committed. Ohio State has one. Georgia has two. Alabama has four.

We also have 3 specialists committed, a kicker, a punter, and a long snapper. That’s 3 of the 7 3-star guys right there.

If you didn’t have a problem with those players a few months ago, you shouldn’t have a problem now. The one guy who didn’t put out good senior tape, we let go.

Focusing on small changes from the dorks at 247 is stupid. Everyone with any knowledge on the subject already knew the upsides and potential downsides with John Turntine,  247 dropping him from a 94 grade to a 93 isn’t the thing that should set you off, unless you’re a moron.

Recruiting: Sunday news and notes

The Texas Longhorns big visit weekend doesn't conclude until later today. With that said, OnTexasFootball is delivering some news and notes to begin your Sunday morning.

Notes so far on Texas official visitors from the weekend...
Brysten Martinez, OT, Gonzales (La.) East Ascension - *LSU commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 4-star+
Where it stands: Texas has their work cut out for them should Lane Kiffin announce he's headed to LSU in a week. But, Texas seemingly has a better shot on the surface with Martinez than Richard Anderson. Made OV with his mom.

Kaden Scherer, OT, Georgetown (Texas) High - *Stanford commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 3-star++
Where it stands: This one isn't cut and dry on the flip due to being a Stanford commit. But Texas has true proximity on their side. Made OV with his family.

Jett Walker, RB, Georgetown (Texas) High - *Minnesota commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 3-star++
Where it stands: Texas is a heavy favorite to flip Walker from Minnesota. Multiple family members attended Texas.

Richard Anderson, DL, New Orleans (La.) Edna Karr - *LSU commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 5-star
Where it stands: Texas is taking their biggest swing, but the LSU hire looms large here. Frank Wilson also plays a key part here. Made OV with his mom.

Josiah Vilmael, CB/N, Richmond (Texas) Fort Bend Travis
OnTexasFootball ranking: 3-star++
Where it stands: Texas is considered the favorite, but Vilmael currently has two more OV's on the schedule. He remains scheduled to go to California Monday-Tuesday, and Kansas State this weekend. He made the OV with his younger brother and parents.

UNC trying to flip Cleveland ...
Four-star+ DL and Texas commitment Vodney Cleveland (Birmingham, Ala./Parker) was back on campus at North Carolina for the second time this season. The Tar Heels are trying to big on NIL in this one. Texas hasn't been concerned in the last 2-3 weeks. Kenny Baker stopped in at Parker High during the second bye week. Showing up again at UNC after the Texas visit, changes the game a little for now.
