I know I've seen Winfield's name all over the scouting/recruiting reports.  Most of these others do not ring a bell.  It's a dang shame Gerry was deprived the chance to give us an "Hola!" silent commit update.

Top rated Texas high school defensive lineman, according to On3:

for those wondering, I created this list using the On3 Athlete Search, narrowed by class year, state and position

Hola had an "offer" at one point, but he got dropped the second the staff saw the traction they were getting with the big fish in the Southeast.

I’m in the same boat. It’s a lot more fun to follow when you see kids you recognize from their high school days vs mercenaries from anywhere USA. And then you had that large study a few years ago that showed most NFL draft picks went to college in their home state. For a lot of reasons you should focus on homegrown talent and just supplement with out of staters.

Bolero aligning himself with helobious. That’s a choice.

I’d rather get the best players we can and win than suck shit through a straw with a bunch of kids you watched play in HS.

2025 NFL draft 1st round-

9 played college in their home state.

22 played college outside their home state.

1 played HS football in 2 different states so I didn't count him. Feel free to do your own research but the bolded in my opinion is horseshit.

I hadn’t looked at the numbers since pre-portal days. But if you looked at the whole draft I imagine I would be right

Arguing that further data feels to one as though it would, if gathered, refute existing data is one way to support one's argument, I suppose.

Well that's in large part because especially at the lower levels most players play in their home state

It's even MORE fun than that to be in the playoffs!

Which, combined with the 2025 first-round data above would suggest an inverse influence relationship between quality (as measured by proximity to the first pick in the draft) and propensity to play close to home. Call me crazy, but I would rather let the ags have the locals who "just get them" while we build a fighting force of extraordinary magnitude.

Fun as it may be for the TXHSFB fans, do you look at that group of offers and see a championship DL group? Let's say Carlton is as mid as the staff seems to think and Winfield is a pure mercenary who ultimately juggles bags between USC, Oregon, and Auburn. Do you still try to have a majority Texas based position group?

I have no problem getting the best of the best. What’s annoying is the offers to 3 star nobody’s from Arizona or cali.

Bummer, least it isn't Georgia

Actually it might have been better if it had been Georgia.  There was a thought with Jerry that Texas and Georgia might split Bowman and Prothro.

Now we might not get either.

Lulz coulda' swore this kid (or maybe a $9.95er??) said Bowman wasn't all that interested in USC because Riley doesn't use the TE much.

I watched Garret Gilbert play in high school.

Let’s wait till Endries is catching TDs from Arch and USC is losing like they have been under Riley.  Between Georgia and USC, it will be easier to flip him from the Trojans.  And from what the OTF guys and plugged in people on this board have stated, Texas doesn’t even talk about NIL till the end.  Wouldn’t be surprised if we get him to take a visit in the fall once we get into the numbers of it.

Some BMD is stepping up for USC, it would seem.

Supposedly 7M over 3 years. Absolutely laughable

Absolutely not, these are just complete empty NIL promises to build momentum and then pray to god they stick. Its fucking stupid as hell. Riley probably also thinks that these promises will get the BMDs to join in to save face rather than see a mass exodus to the portal/decommittments. The money is not there whatsoever..I would think a majority of their BMDs are thinking about buyout money more than NIL

I decided to also do round 2.

12 stayed home and 20 left the state. I'm done wasting my time.

Mark Bowman ...
Texas fully understands the battle for 5-star tight end Mark Bowman (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei). With that said, there is some quiet confidence headed into June.

Nice call less than 24 hours ago, Jerry.

Reading the above, you can't really blame Gerry for that complete change and commitment.

Why, because there was confidence on the Texas side? Other than not being able to predict the future, how is that on Gerry?

If he has an offer for $7m for 3 as a TE....he should take that.

I had such high hopes for Helo after he posted about his love of Deftones.  I guess it just proves the old adage about a blind squirrel.

Just ask this guy:

Gunnar Helm had more receiving yards in 2024 than the leading TE had at USC in the 3 years Lincoln Riley has been there combined.

Joseph Ossai was a child when his family moved to American and Conroe.  He wasn't recruited to play football here for another 6 or 7 years.  Not a proper example.
