He wrote or co-wrote a few dozen Voyager episodes. If I had to guess, he’s hoping to come back at some point, so some criticisms he’s keeping to himself. He’s a huge Trekkie. Ditto, it’s a travesty Pushing Daisies was cancelled so early.

It's not bad at all imo.. Yeah, it’s not bad at all. It feels more Star Trek-like than some of the TNG movies. I even like The Motion Picture now. I used to be a real snob about it as a kid (saw it in the theater when it came out) and rave about II-III-IV, but now that I am older and understand everything that was going on with ST at the time, I appreciate it for what it is. I want to take my kid to see TMP and the others at Alamo when they occasionally show them.
February 27Feb 27 Yeah basically the first 4 and Undiscovered Country are all MUST watches for me. 5 still doesn't hold up well unfortunately. 2/3/4 is about as perfect a continuous trilogy as you can get.
May 27May 27 Star Trek III is so devoid of real emotion though, like Kirk's only child dies, there is the reaction, and poof gone from existence. It wasn't till VI that they had to retcon a character change.

May 28May 28 I really like V for some reason, maybe because I only had IV, V, and VI on VHS and liked them all, like seriously these scenes are pure gold https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cqbSNERnc0 The rest is admittedly terrible.
May 28May 28 5 is sooo bad. BUT the scenes you pulled are pretty fun to watch...even if only for the unintentional comedy. It's also the movie that really sold how close and connected the 3 leads are. Kirk/Spock/Bones. Edited May 28May 28 by Drew

I always felt like there was potentially a decent movie lurking within V's plot(s), but it shouldn't have been Spock's brother to start with, and Roddenberry and Paramount really meddled with the original plot that Shatner had (which was a decent plot), and both meddled for different reasons. The writing was a shit-show for a lot of reasons (writer's strike, etc.) . I always found it amusing that after they couldn't get Sean Connery for Sybok because he was doing Last Crusade, that they named the planet "Sha Ka Ray" or whatever after him. Would have been interesting with him in it and Paramount might have been willing to splurge for more time or budget. The interesting thing to me, is that by all accounts, Shatner was a competent director and even Takei had praise for him.

So they had to give Spock a reason, because he’s Spock and would never betray Kirk like that. Thus, they’re brothers! Which is why that’s introduced about halfway through the movie and then never mentioned again.

June 27Jun 27 That two-parter was badass. Captain Dickhead comes in and everyone fucking hates him, but then he gets the job done in the end. "Oh, and I understand you are holding a starfleet officer named Jean-Luc Picard. I expect him to be returned. Immediately."

June 30Jun 30 It’s also a rare case where the 2nd episode is better than the first. TNG always had trouble sticking the landing.

July 25Jul 25 Some Academy snippets: https://ew.com/star-trek-starfleet-academy-first-look-photos-paul-giamatti-alien-exclusive-11778305 Sounds pretty episodic / hijinks of the week Also will include some sort of 32nd century Klingon hybrid - might be Paul Giamatti's character As seen in EW's exclusive first look at the show, the latest Trek entry is set in the 32nd century and revolves around the first class of Starfleet cadets at the academy after 120 years. "They've got a lot riding on their shoulders, and they are meant to reestablish and rebuild everything that we all know and love about Star Trek," Kurtzman continues. "They convey hope and they search for hope, and that felt like an extremely relevant message to talk about now." Landau adds, "It's wish fulfillment. Every week it's about a new part of coming of age. One week that can be a prank, war erupts another week, a romance begins another week, we encounter an alien species for the first time and we don't know what the hell we're doing [another week]. But at the end of every episode, what we want our audience to feel is, 'I want to go to Starfleet Academy.' Even in the deepest, darkest depths of character problems and drama, you get such a good feeling from watching this show [of] how much you want to be there so badly."

It wasn't 4 months, right at 3 months, but I was younger and watching it as it came out. That was the first cliffhanger in the series run. The first two seasons didn't have two part episodes during their seasons either. This was pre-internet, so nobody knew what was going on. That season, they would show 3-4 new episodes then show re-runs for 2-3 weeks, then show 3-4 new episodes again. When Best of Both Worlds Part I came out, most of us thought they were in another re-run cycle and that Part II would come out in 2-3 weeks. It was a long wait to get resolution. TNG was can't miss TV for me before DVR and On Demand.

July 26Jul 26 Actually in the middle of yet another rewatch of Voyager. Letting it run in the background while I work, so going through it fairly quickly. Getting towards the end of season 5. TNG and Voyager were definitely can’t miss when originally airing. If we had to be somewhere, heaven help the bastard that touches the vcr and it doesn’t tape.
July 28Jul 28 Speaking of Trek podcasts. I've been enjoying listening to the Greatest Generation in conjunction with my watch through to TNG.
