December 14, 20223 yr the most shocking thing about any of this is that people exist who have never heard the word jiggaboo.

But bug and jig don't sound that much alike to have one slip for the other. This word is in his vocabulary. Bug A Boo is also a word no one uses. I don't really buy his reasoning. But either way, he said the word on live tv. Boo vs boo. What law are you positing that would require mistakenly used words to begin the same, rather than end the same, rhyme, or whatever other pattern that might cause the brain to pull up one rather than another while speaking extemporaneously?

During the ISU/Texas game he acted like he'd been a lifelong Horn just reveling in the greatness and prestige of your various traditions. I get that what's guys doing his job do, but given the disdain between UT and BU it was jarring. If I were a Baylor fan/alum (barf) I'd have been apoplectic. Edited December 14, 20223 yr by taybo20

December 14, 20223 yr Whenever something like this happens I wish we had audio from the control truck. In this case I am sure the conversation started with something like "Wait, what the fuck did he just say? Ahh Christ."
December 14, 20223 yr I'm a mid-50 white guy that works in the technology field, and I have _never_ heard that word used in person or seen it in print. I did, back in the day, see Police Academy, so I as the clip above proves, I have heard that word before. I'm sure I assumed that they made up a word to use in place of the N word. There are probably dozens (hundreds) of old words-of-hate sitting out there... It's not a bad thing that people don't know them anymore. Edited December 14, 20223 yr by 0xdeadbeef

December 14, 20223 yr Eh. I actually have no problem believing that he was thinking of "bug-a-boo" in the context of what he was trying to say. Much ado about not much, IMO.

December 14, 20223 yr Popular Post For the record, I like RG3 on the air. He has fun during the broadcast, and this fucking shit is supposed to be fun. Even if everything he says isn't always funny, at least it's not the generic mealymouthed shit that most announcers bore us to death with.
December 14, 20223 yr When I was a kid we knew the word in the neighborhood but none of us knew it had any racist meaning. I think one kid heard it in a movie, started calling us that, and it's a funny sounding word so we just called each other jiggaboos for fun. Never knew it was racist until I heard it in a movie in that context in my 20s or late teens. But that's a weird word to just randomly say. And bugaboo has always meant a mistake but like with stuff like "cap" the black community might have taken it and adopted it into their own language. I have no idea and don't really care, but for purposes of things like tv and media if one person would get fired for saying it everyone should get fired for saying it.
December 14, 20223 yr Nothing will come from this, but I hope it does because RGIII sucks and I’d rather not see him on TV.

Doubt very seriously if he would have lost all those endorsements if he just used the J word. I guess he got in pretty big trouble for the White Lives Matter t-shirt though. Dammit RGIII! You brought back a word most people either haven't heard in years or never heard at all.

December 14, 20223 yr I kind of like him too. He generally means well and just tries too hard sometimes with his commentary, which is driven by the incentive structure to stand out in that profession. His line after Roschon hurdled the defender on the way to the end zone in the Baylor game as a “Johnson on Johnson crime” was a good one. That sounded like a cock fight.

I definitely heard it growing up, but never as a way to disparage blacks as a group. I'm not quite sure when I even discovered it was a racial slur. It was used pretty much exactly like RG3 used it. Disparaging someone who was a trash-talker, showy, or flamboyant in some other manner.
December 14, 20223 yr I'm surprised so many were unfamiliar with this word. I was well acquainted with it growing up in Houston in the 80s and 90s. It was only a small notch below the N-word. If you said it out loud around a bunch of black dudes, there wouldn't be anymore you.
December 14, 20223 yr Popular Post This thread is funny to read. There is zero public pressure for Griffin to lose his job but you have the typical whiners in here complaining about cancel culture for no reason whatsoever. Well, I guess there's a reason but it's just that they're scared of their shadows because they've been told to be. CANCEL CULTURE IS EVERYWHERE SOMEBODY HOLD ME
December 14, 20223 yr I first heard this word because certain fraternity houses on Leon St. would play a song during rush parties where a stanza has the word in it, before something about being in a woodpile looking at you. That fraternity house at 2515 Leon St. will remain KnAmeless. cough cough

I went to high school in the mean streets of a poor Tulsa suburb, so I think I’ve heard them all, and I think most people knew what they meant. The only one I learned later in life was the racist term for Brazilian nuts, but I think only really old people used that one. There are also stories like this where the kids don’t know but the grown ups do and never correct it, because they are okay with it or indifferent.
