July 3, 20232 yr Well, here's a scam I hadn't heard of before, apparently targeting folks in Memorial Villages. Posted by MVPD: Quote Over the past 24 hours, letters have been showing up addressed to area residents by name. The letters are addressed to the woman of the household and come from another woman who provides a Memorial Drive address. In the letter, the female claims that she is an escort and that she has had a relationship with the addressee's husband/significant other. The woman states that she is in financial hardship and offers to provide proof of the affair for a "reasonable offer". The woman includes a copy of a drivers license and a social security card she claims are hers (they are not). The woman requests that you email her to discuss the situation. These letters are scams and are showing up across the area. They appear to be computer generated and even have a QR code. Please do not respond to the letter or email the woman. The department is aware of the letters so you do not need to notify us at this time. MVPD detectives are aware of the situation and are investigating.

August 8, 20232 yr Why does the article show a current picture?Traffic. More people equal more cars. Traffic in Houston is crazy already. And it's not like we have any realistic public transportation. And if they did attempt public transportation, it would be another useless train that circles downtown. We'll just end up with a 20 lane Katy Freeway and more toll roads. All of which won't be finished until 2150, at the earliest.

August 11, 20232 yr Didn't know where else to put this, and I thought some of you native Houstonians would appreciate this. My father, in his 70s, has one of the more remarkable memories of any person I've ever encountered. He remembers the smallest of details from his childhood. As a gift, we got him a "subscription" to "StoryWorth," a company that sends out journaling prompts, and inspires the recipient to respond. In a way, its to memorialize his memories. Anyway, in response to "tell us about your grandparents" he responded with the below. A look at Houston in the 1950's and 60's. Its almost unrecognizable. Quote I was born in Saint Joseph’s Hospital in downtown Houston, Texas. Saint Joseph’s was the Catholic hospital in Houston and still remains to this day (AD 2023). Of course, SJH became a part of a much larger health institution and I doubt the nuns are still running the joint anymore. Instead, fresh-faced MBA’s are in charge and making a fortune. In any case, back then, that’s where all the Catholics were born. I entered earth in a Holy Place. (All the denominations had their own hospitals: Methodist, Episcopal [St Lukes], Baptist (later Southwest and now Memorial, which merged with Herrman). I came home to a suburban 1950’s life in Briargrove. At that time, Briargrove was way, way out west of the then limits of the semi-sleepy city of Houston (pop.: 600,000; with racial mix at 74%/20%/6%). Westheimer Road was two lanes from Post Oak Blvd all the way to Fulshear (Farm to Market Road 1093) and when we first moved to Briargrove, I was told the neighborhood’s mailboxes were all up on Westheimer. Across Westheimer Rd from Briargrove was open pasture, beautiful grassland with large oak trees that seemed to stretch from Briargrove all the way back to Post Oak Rd. Where Neiman Marcus now sits at corner of the Galleria was a pasture with large oaks, cattle and the old Post Oak schoolhouse. All of that land was owned by R.E. “Bob” Smith and his wife, who died without children. The Smiths allowed the little league to play on the coroner of Westheimer and what is now Loop 610. Back then, when my brother was playing, 610 was barely under construction. The scene at Bob Smith Field was fairly rustic as I remember. But, the league was known as the Post Oak Little League, the name it continues to have today. Back in the neighborhood, I still have a recollection of big steam shovels digging out the Bering Ditch, which borders the west side of Briargrove. I think the ditch had been there, but “they” came along and deepened and widened it and piled all the dirt up on the West Bank, which was pretty fun for all of us to cross the ditch and play on. My father told us later that after work he would walk down Burgoyne with a shotgun, cross the ditch and hunt dove in the open fields to the west which stretched to then two-lane Voss Rd. Now, there are apartments, strip centers and office buildings on that land, all built from late 1960’s to early 1970’s. (I can still remember my Grandfather saying when the apartments were built on Winrock Street [as in Winthrop Rockefeller] that “someday that will all be slums.” He wasn’t too far off from his prediction.) San Felipe Road ended at Chimney Rock and from there until past Potomac or Nantucket to Briargrove was a large field. There’s was a trail through the tall weeds. During the dry summer months, we kiddos would demand that mom drive across the dirt road, instead of taking the longer route via Westheimer. She wouldn’t do it if it rained or was about to rain, but when dry the hard-packed, black gumbo was easy for the old Buick to handle. That said, it was a pretty rough road with a number of potholes, but it was a lot of fun for us. And, by the way, we didn’t have air conditioning in the cars back in that day, so we rode around Houston in the summer with all the windows down. Never really knew the difference. Across Westheimer Rd., just west of the Briargrove ditch on the south side of Westheimer was a community of farmhands that worked for Bob Smith. There were probably 20 small white houses all in a row along an oyster shell road and were occupied by Black families, many of whom I assume worked on the farm working the cattle etc. and others who worked as maids in and around Houston. I have a memory of driving over there and either picking up a babysitter or dropping off a babysitter in that community. That is now all concrete and steel and the giant oak trees are long gone. Sometime around 1940 or 1941 my grandparents bought 12 acres in Tall Timbers, a new area on the west side of River Oaks which was being developed. When they bought it was all undeveloped forest. My aunt claims that Mike Hogg was very fond of my grandfather and made these 12 acres available. It’s possible. The Hogg Brothers developed River Oaks and gave Memorial Park, across the bayou from Tall Timbers to the City of Houston. Buffalo Bayou ran all along and formed the western boundary of their property. To build their new home, they first had to clear the land of the jungle-like flora. I remember seeing a typewritten proposal from a company that would clear the land, including cut a number of the pine trees to make room for the house and building site. This proposal stated that a white crew would be $0.50 an hour and a “negro” crew would be $0.35 an hour. I have no idea what choice they made. But first they built the log cabin on the south side of the property. I can still see that log cabin today as it was a true log cabin and it was constructed from the pine trees cut on the property. All the interior wood was also pine. It had a big limestone fireplace. There was an old black man named Henry who lived on the property, and I think he may have been partly responsible for construction of much of the cabin. I can remember Henry, always in his blue denim overalls and white shirt. He was a huge man to me when I was four or five years old. He had a bald head and was like someone from Central Casting (like the guy in The Green Mile). He and another man who lived and worked on the property next door were made famous when they captured an alligator in Buffalo Bayou and tied it up until the Houston Zoo came and got it. Henry probably died in the early 1960s. After buying the 12 acres, Grandfather sold two acres on the north end and two acres on the south end, keeping 8 acres. On the north end lived Dr. Davis (who I didn’t know anything about) and on the south end was Sue Fondren Trammell and “Tex” Trammell. They built a 1950s mid-century stone and metal showplace which cascaded down to Buffalo Bayou. Her brother, Walter Fondren, also built a stunning, tiered modern home which cascaded to the bayou on Inverness.

October 27, 20232 yr Article about 25 Houston postal workers being attacked while on the job this year. If like me you're thinking that they're getting attacked because of crazy people, or someone wants to steal any mail they're carrying, that's not the deal. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/crime/article/postal-workers-decry-rash-violence-houston-18446031.php Quote Those launching the attacks are often trying to steal carriers' universal keys, or "arrow keys," which give them access to the blue USPS collection boxes. The thieves are often looking for gift cards and checks they can cash fraudulently. Never mail anything in a USPS blue collection box especially if the collection isn't until tomorrow or the next day. Even if it's a harmless non-financial letter, it could very easily end up in the trash by someone looking for money.
