Movies that switch genres midway through the movie. The tone changes, the atmosphere changes. The second half of the movie is very different from the first half.

First up...From Dusk Til Dawn.

First half of the movie is a roadtrip with a kidnapping. Tense and creepy.

Second half is balls out vampires and gore and killings.

Full Metal Jacket seems like two different movies. Boot Camp / 'Nam.

Barbarian

Lonesome Dove seemed like two different movies to me- Texas, and everything after leaving.

Psycho.  Starts as a story about illicit love affair and embezzlement, until she checks into the Bates Motel.

Good call.

First one I thought of was FMJ

Adaptation

Genius the way they switched genres too.

Yeah that's because each half had a different director

Same. I love that movie and watch it every now and again, but it’s hard to get through the second part.

Would A.I. fall into this category? The tension between Kubrick’s and Spielberg’s competing visions make for an unusual viewing experience.

Monty Python’s Meaning of Life is like 7. 8 if you count The Crimson Permanent Assurance.

Meaning of Life is just a series of sketches that are more or less related to each other. Holy Grail is the same, though it gets a little more tightly bound.

They only made one movie that had something like a single plot.

Nic Cage's best work ever.

Casino Royale always felt like 2 separate movies to me- first part in Jamaica and Miami, second part at poker tournament in Montenegro.

You don’t say.

Yep. This is a good one.

The Island.  Started out as a sci fi movie with a cool concept.  Then turned into a Michael Bay shlock fest.

Point is, it's not a shift in tone if you don't have a single narrative all the way through it.

And the tone doesn't even shift; it's silly all the way through.

They should’ve made a weekly tv show using that model.

Gremlins. Turns up to 11 with the Mom/kitchen scene.

I like how this thread has made me consider how Kubrick may have stolen the concept for Full Metal Jacket from Stripes.

A Beautiful Mind....academic, then seems like a spy thriller, then you learn he's just schizophrenic.

Sorry to bother you.
