Name drop?  It’s my wife’s cousin. And he’s a priest.  I don’t know how else to describe him. He’s in her family and he’s a dude of the cloth.  I mean, you’ve never in your whole life said something like “my cousin is an electrician and he told me to check the breakers”

Yeah...beware the "family priest."  We had one of those -- a cousin who had JUST taken his formal vows.  Family wedding in Piedras Negras....in September, in an un-air conditioned church....it was 175 degrees in there.  So, he takes a train in for his first formal priestly duties, presiding at the wedding.  For his homily, he spent FORTY FIVE EXCRUCIATING, SWEAT-SOAKED MINUTES reading from a book of anti-abortion poetry (yes, there is such a thing), in Spanish.  The first couple of poems, I translate for my wide-eyed wife.  After that, I just said "it's more of the same bullshit" as we rolled our eyes and toyed with heat stroke.  Due to the length of the wedding, we don't even get to the reception till like 9:00 at night.  We're starving, and dying of thirst.  All that's on the table is each setting had a single 6.5 oz bottle of warm Coke, and in the center, a "pate" that some family member had made that tasted a lot like play-doh.  No food or drink would be served until the bride and groom arrived after all the photos were taken and such.  By the time they got there at 10:00, we guzzled some cold water that was finally released, ate something (don't even remember what), then went home with headaches from the heat and dehydration.

The poetry wasn't even well-written, for fuck's sake.

Seriously, safety first.  But if shit goes sideways, she's gonna think it's because of her confession.  On top of that, our family priest is flying in tomorrow during extreme weather where he is (blizzard conditions) and where we are (tornado/t-storms).  God, it would appear, is not entirely without a sense of humor this week.

Stay safe y'all.  We do need the rain.

You have to fly the family priest in to diddle the kids? I thought they all did that.

Perhaps.  But mine never rhymes.  And if it's 175 degrees, I cut a sentence or two off.  I'm not a monster.

La Niña, which increases hurricane activity and worsens western drought, is finally over after a rare three-year "triple dip," the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Thursday.

Weather conditions are now considered neutral, NOAA officials said. The neutral conditions are expected to continue in the Northern Hemisphere through spring and early summer.

There's around a 60% chance that El Niño develops in the fall, climate officials said. When El Niño arrives, it's likely to cause wetter-than-average conditions along the Gulf Coast between October and March. It can mean dryer and warmer conditions in the northern U.S. and Canada.

Right on cue, after an abnormally warm start to March, colder, wetter weather returns just in time for Spring Break. Gonna be chilly, rainy, and windy as hell Thursday and Friday.

Good.  These SXSW fuckers had it too nice since Friday (though a bit warm on Saturday).  They should know how fucking weird it gets here in March.  Gonna throw off our fishing/camping plans a bit.  I can only hope and prey you white people with multi-generational inherited wealth can still go skiing while the rest of us work ;)

Bullshit aside, we do need some more rain before late April.

enjoy it while it lasts.

Hey winter....if I was in your shoes, I'd be....

LEAVING!  WHAT A GOOD IDEA!

Digging the current extended forecast for the next 2 weeks. Long stretch of days with highs in the low 80's, lows in the high 50's or low 60's.

This is what late March is supposed to feel like.

what time tomorrow (Sunday) this cold shit hitting Austin?  Trying to make a Trail of Lights plan and kids should be able to tough it out but one is under the weather and if it's gonna get legit cold, we'll hold back.  But they can hack it, or should be able to, at like 50-55*.  But myriad reports say by dusk could already be down to 35-40*.

I'm doing my part to help the grid by pruning more tomorrow near the lines and having Austin Energy come out before end of month to get the really tall ones I can't reach in my middle-age anymore.  But we live, thanks to politics, on a protected circuit so other than downed limbs...we will be fine this Winter.  The rest of Texas apparently can get fucked. Godspeed you chilly bastards.

Front is rolling through late this afternoon. Will get windy and start dropping 2-3 degrees every hour starting around 4 pm. Should bottom out around 40 at dawn tomorrow. You should be in good shape if you head out a little before sundown. Wind supposed to die down by then to almost nothing and should still be a few ticks above 50 at 5:30 Sunday.

So KXAN's hourly forecast is currently predicting 41 F at 11 PM.

It's 10:40 PM and their website is showing 34 F.

Good job, guys.

My weather station at the house is showing 32 @ 11:49.

Checked the forecast for the lows and said 38.

Weather weasels suck.

FIFS. He's going to look at Christmas lights, for fucks sake.

28 in San Marcos. Forecast was not that cold. It is nice to be able to have no AC or heater running all day

Wowza. Wasn’t convinced by weather outlets it’d get this cold but glad I got my ass outside last night and cover up flora and move planters into garage.  Even the kid’s inflatables are frosted over.  Outside temp shows 29* and I bet it falls another 1-2 before school.  Upstairs heater kicked on but it always runs more up there.  Down here, we dropped 6 degrees in less than 24 hours.  Have understanding with wife, if I can’t run the A/c below 76, we don’t run the heater until 64.

I should put a coat on the the Elf on Shelf or just tell that little fucker To ‘’magic-magic’ his ass a scarf and warmer socks.

I'm glad I dripped my outer faucets.  It probably wasn't cold enough for long enough to damage pipes, but I'm not taking chances.

Some primo winter weather on tap to close out 2023 in Texas. Loving this forecast of calm, sunny days with highs around 60 and lows in the high 30's through NYE.

Need to take advantage and walk the dogs and put some miles on my bike while it lasts.

First week of 2024 looks to be very stereotypically January. Dreary, windy and chilly, with occasional showers.

Our oak trees seem to be having "mast" years more and more frequently in the last 10-15 years.  Way more than normal, and that may not be a good harbinger for things to come.

I was picking them up by the bucketful this morning and was pretty chilly.  About 35* with the wind chill just after dawn.  Neighbor's dad looks at me like, "Little cold for that, but why do think there's so many again this year?"  My theory is the relentless draught for the last 2-3 years, the trees are trying to make sure their species lives on.  He agrees and adds he remembers when it used to only happen 2 or 3 times a decade, not 2 or 3 times in a row.  He excuses himself to go get warm inside and says he can't wait for summer on days like these.  I get it, but seems like we go from 110* to 40* in a big hurry every year now.  The trees are trying to tell us something.  So are my shrunken balls.  Should be nice enough out after lunch to go outside and play with new Christmas toys though.  Looks like more rain next week, glad about that.

And I learned something today.  Now I feel I can watch football and drink for the rest of the afternoon without guilt.

https://www.massaudubon.org/news/latest/about-those-acorns#:~:text=Like many trees%2C oaks have,acorns in a mast year!

Yeah, your mom likes my "mast year."  The more you know...

Bad jokes aside, my wife and I both take care of our trees ourselves and have tried out damn best to keep them alive through heat and freeze alike.  So like dorks we track their growth, and I prune myself to make sure its done correctly (about 75-80 trees, half of which are myriad oak varietals), and even log their mast years (that sounds like a sexual act, could be-dunno).  And the last 3 late Autumns/early Winters have been extremely high counts.  I mean, we don't count the acorns, but you can just tell by how many craft bags 'n shit we fill up (never mind the extra squirrel activity).  What we've seen in the last 3 years would be perfectly normal over the course of a decade.  But it's been over the course of just 27 months.  Now this isn't "The Happening" level of bullshit, but it's certainly a disturbing early warning sign.  I've never tracked 3 years like this in 27 years in Central Texas even with other very hot summers and cold years.

Obviously anecdotal to my neighborhood, but I pay attention all over town.  The fact that it's still going on with consistent drops is the weird part.  A mast year usually sees a narrow window of 2-4 weeks of high volume drops.  This has been 8+ weeks of marked drops, week in and week out.  For 3 straight years.  And nearly every "wet" cycle has not panned out to anything like we thought it should during that same timeframe.  And now those Oaks foretelling of their degradation will crack and fall into power lines this next freeze.  Maybe everything is fine, but in my neck of the woods...this is all kinds of wrong and everybody knows it but doesn't want to admit it.  I like trees.  So I take care of mine.  And the more I reread what I just typed, it's some kinda Arbor Horror Porn.  Dammit, I had something for this!
