A former University of Virginia football player suspected of killing three football players and wounding two other students on campus late Sunday night is in custody after a manhunt in Charlottesville, Virginia, police confirmed Monday.

During a news conference on Monday, University of Virginia president Jim Ryan said Jones shot and killed three Cavaliers football players: junior receiver Lavel Davis Jr. of Dorchester, South Carolina; junior receiver Devin Chandler of Huntersville, North Carolina; and junior defensive end/linebacker D'Sean Perry of Miami.

Authorities said the suspect in the shooting, identified as Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., has been taken into custody. Jones was listed as a freshman running back on the team's 2018 roster, and his roster bio noted that he previously played at Petersburg High School and Varina High School in Virginia.

I get this is Surly and we're all a bunch of assholes mostly but this post is offensive.  Imagine being the parents/brothers/sisters/coaches/fellow players of those students and reading your post.  Neg me if you want.

We're generally assholes, but we're not dicks.

My boss has a son at UVA. Was locked down in the basement of library he was studying at from 10:40 last night until about an hour or so ago. So fucked up.

come on yall. there's a time and place for dark humor, but in the wake of such tragedy is not the time.

UVA's basketball game against Northern Iowa already cancelled today.

I don't see how UVA football can play another game this year. Especially since they're not even bowl eligible

Sad story and a lot of questions.

I love that campus and always had a soft spot for UVA.

I was thinking that same thing earlier. I don't know how I would feel about it. I think I, obviously I speak just for me, would want to play the final two games.

They were discussing it on the radio at about 6:15a CST this morning.  It was sounding like it just started.  Holy hell since last night?  A football player going after football players sounds like bad shit was going on beforehand.

fuck man....  what kind of asshole does that to 3 former teammates

Agreed.  My daughter (no pic, I'll cut you man) and son in law are both grads.

Awful story.

Weird details....I mean, on a charter bus for a field trip?

College football teams have continued their seasons after worse tragedies than this. I'm not sure any other sport is as ingrained in American catharsis as college football. Playing those last two games is what those kids would have wanted their team to do. You don't quit - you go play your ass off for your brothers that you just lost.

Luckily my daughter was in her dorm at the time, but she is in the CMB and they rehearse/warm up/etc. right there.  She had several friends caught out that were locked down all night in less comfortable situations - fortunately the inconvenience was all it was.  Luckily this sounds like more of a crime of passion than someone planning to take out as many people as possible.  I'll guess we'll find out more soon.  Anyway, Davis was definitely a player I've noticed at games - 6'7" at receiver and athletic, always hoped he would get more targets.  It's been a terrible season for UVA football, so I really hope they can end it on a better note than this (if they want to play - whatever they choose as best for them is fine with me).

Some stone cold motherfuckers on this thread.

Today's also the anniversary of the Marshall University plane crash that killed 75 people. Damn.

Damn, dude. Less than 24 hours and one guy negged to hell and back, and here you are, feeding us straight lines.

Not gonna do it. Wouldn't be prudent. I'll let someone else give it a shot.

Always interesting to see what falls into the acceptable level when it comes to Surly making jokes about people dying. @Parliament cracks a joke about 3 people dying and catches a temporary ban from @hayden_horn. When 150+ die in Seoul the first two replies were "They did the mash?" and "That's a lot of lost seouls", and both posts received only positive rep and were marked as popular posts . Not suggesting that Js1 or Bevo needed to catch a ban but Surly group-think seems pretty fickle given the established tone of reaction to death, unless it's only funny when weird looking foreigners die.

Think of posting dark humor on Surly in the wake of a tragedy as the ultimate critical thinking/reading the room test.

Sometimes a motherfucker gets the answer wrong.

Well shit

So tragic. Sad…not a whole lot of information out there (potential motive):

The circumstances leading up to Sunday’s shooting remained unclear on Monday. Police Chief Tim Longo said Jones previously came to the attention of school officials after someone reported that he had claimed to have a gun. He was also associated with a report of hazing, although Longo was not able to provide additional information on his alleged involvement in the incident.

“I know that it was eventually closed due to witnesses that would not cooperate with the process,” Longo said.

Officials continue to investigate.

Sad.....two of my nieces (no pics) are enrolled at UVA.  They were locked down in their dorms over night....

I got banned for a month or so by Katy after the Ohio State game in '05 for posting something like "Now that I've been to Columbus on gameday, I realize the real tragedy of the Kent State shooting was that it didn't occur 35 years later and 137 miles south". Tasteless, sure, but at least I had more than a couple of days' recency...

Read that the player in question may have been the victim of hazing? Idk. Whatever the cause it's just so awful to hear.

See. this is how you make inappropriate but funny jokes on surly in the wake of tragedy.  Besides laughter beats "Thoughts and Prayers" bullshit every time, it's proven to improve your health. .

Jokes aside, obviously we ache for the players' families and the whole team in general.  But I would imagine with very little information even with phones, last night was the longest night for most of those young people who live on/near campus.  This looks targeted and revenge-based, but they didn't know that for several hours overnight while locked down in dark rooms with strangers.  Given what usually happens in mass shootings, every little noise probably sounded like someone reloading.  I hope they all get the counseling they need in the wake of this.  Gonna be some father's that won't let go of their UVA kids at Thanksgiving this year.  And that's okay.

Jones had also been on the threat assessment team's radar because of his involvement in a hazing investigation, Longo said. "I don't know the facts and circumstances of that investigation," the chief added.

the way the above reads makes me think he was the one doing the hazing not the other way around...I would not think the "threat assessment team" would be looking into a hazing incident for the victim of that incident nor would they use the phrase "his involvement in" instead of "a potential victim of"

but considering that he had a weapons violation 21 months ago and did not report is as he was suppose to do and then another report of "having a gun" (whatever that means) two months ago and they are still "assessing that threat" well who knows what their threat assessment team really investigates

which kinds of gets me back to what I say in a lot of these incidents or rape cases or anything else......fucking universities have no business investigating shit when it comes to crime turn it over to the police and kick the student from campus until it is resolved or don't......but stop with the university feel good bullshit when it comes to crime and investigating crime and enforcement of crime laws.......universities are very shitty at it and seem even shittier at it when it involves athlete students

It’s not that simple of just turning shit over to the police, especially because of the Clery Act.

Jones played as a freshman in 2018 and I guess was still in school there despite not being on the team. The guys he killed were came in as freshmen in 2020. Doesnt really make sense for him to be a victim of hazing from the guys he killed

Getting hazed doesn't make it okay to murder 3 people last I checked.

The selective outrage on this site always amuses me. @hayden_horn banning Parliament for that comment is some 5*  bullshit considering the off color humor that gets posted here on the regular. I guess football players should be treated differently than non football players. But even so, is hayden also going to ban Deej? To be clear, Im not in favor of either catching a ban, I'm just curious why one post is worthy of a ban, and not the other.

Nice, personal perspective from a prof on two of the guys

thread continues

It doesn’t say he was a hazing victim, just that he was part of an investigation. Could’ve been a victim, perpetrator, or witness.

A month for that?  That sounds extreme even for Katy.  I don't know anybody that would have an issue with that joke considering how horribly we were all treated up there that night.  And not to sound like an insensitive dick (me?  never!)...but my buddy and I got assaulted three different times in Columbus and we were both about 29, over 6' tall, and in fighting shape back then.  I'm guessing somebody that looks/sounds like the Agnors probably get mercilessly harassed and heckled and shoved around.  reminds me of a time a few years earlier, had a "Dick's Last Resort" manager on Riverwalk tell us the schpeel about how you can say anything (except racist shit) and they won't kick you out.  She went to A&M a few years before my college days.  Before our first round of beers got to the table, I was already being escorted out.

This hazing by younger guys once off the team story is getting stranger and stranger.  Is that a thing at UVA, like reverse hazing where the younger guys fuck with the older guys to boost their confidence or some bullshit?
