November 17Nov 17 . . . and yet there's a Maudie's a quarter mile away. Still not the best choice in the neighborhood, not by a long shot, but . . . Chuy's? We used to white collar the happy hour at that Chuy's because the work ladies and their friends all wanted to go there. Alrighty, we'll follow. Edited November 17Nov 17 by jimmyjazz
November 17Nov 17 This is, perhaps, a really stupid question, but how do I find out in-store meat prices at costco without going there? When I go to grocery on the website all I see is the online-only stuff.

Do you have “buy in warehouse”selected in the filters? just poked around, maybe you are right that the butcher cuts aren’t online. Buy in warehouse serves things like frozen burger patties when I search for something more specific like ribeye or sirloin I don’t even get the buy in warehouse option in the filter tab. That filter should absolutely work, but it doesn't. The closest I've gotten is to pick same day or 2 day delivery, and poke around that way. They make it clear though that those prices are higher because they have the fees baked in.

I took my kids up there for pho once. We went to MT Super market and I showed them the seafood section. It reeked of fish. My middle son was about 9 and he said "they should call it PU instead of MT."

HMart and 99 Ranch are our preferred asian grocery options. I'm a big 99 Ranch guy -- their produce section is phenomenal. And hell, sometimes it's nice to cook up some duck eggs. To steer this somewhat back to the main topic, we shop at specialty stores a lot more now that there's just two of us, and a lot less at bulk stores like Costco. Bulk food made for feeding a family of 4 for 3-4 meals doesn't make nearly as much sense when it's just two adults at home.
November 17Nov 17 Dry goods (TP, paper towels, detergent, etc.) still work for empty nesters, but yeah, I'm not buying a 5-pack of nice ribeyes and freezing 3 of them just to save a couple of bucks per pound.

Same same. That's pretty much our Costco list: paper towels, TP, some cleaning products, a few shelf-stable foods, a few prepared foods (e.g., their pre-made chicken tikka masala, which makes at least two good dinners for two with ease). Meat purchases are really only for when we're cooking for a group or the kids are home.

November 18Nov 18 Goes from roughly 400 to low 300. It's around 20 down to 15-16 a pound, not a great deal unless you can't wait.

Not like anything you'd find in Houston but more than you'd find in Belton. There's also another small strip mall area on Airport and Lamar that's anchored by a 99 Ranch that has higher end restaurants. No banh mi there though. The Lakeline area at 183 and 45, anchored by H Mart, has a bunch of more mainland Chinese restaurants that are pretty good. Parmer and 35 in the Walmart Shopping Center - NG Cafe. They have 13 different Banh Mi on the menu, and bake their own baguettes.

November 24Nov 24 Tonight’s dinner was courtesy of Costco. The rana brand lobster ravioli was on sale so I grabbed that and a box of cheddar bay biscuit mix. Made the butter sauce, added some pasta water and lemon juice and then some corn starch to thicken it back up, and used that for the pasta and the biscuits.

Go buy way more meat than we need at a price we think is a great deal but actually is not, once you take into account how much had to be thrown away due to freezer burn? This is the American way!

Many parts of Dallas go from well to do to sketch pretty quick, although gentrification is killing those areas fast. There is still one little area of sketchiness not far away from me hanging on probably due to some good sized older apartment complexes. The sketchy little liquor store I prefer over the big new chain store is right by where I gas up, and last night I noticed a taco trailer in the lot. Just said “tacos”. I can’t wait to try it.
December 14Dec 14 I was pleasantly surprised not long ago when I stopped at a taco truck and one of the items on offer was cachete. Hell yes, tells me I’m at the right place. Edited December 14Dec 14 by Pato del Muerto
