I really figured Grendel to be the balding guy with the long greasy pony tail type. Hmm.

RIP, dude. He was definitely out there.

He's pretty much like I imagined him, except ji saw him skinnier and scragglier, like a weird Simpsons character.

RIP Grendel

I've been convinced that Grendel and Lobo were the same person.

Not cool dude.  Grendel was good people and actually died.  And I almost died last year.  And neither of us are celebrities.  His family might still be reading this site so be cool man.

And that sounds EXACTLY like something Grendel would write!

Okay man,

you do you.  I guess it’s funny to you

He was a great singer and even bigger member of the Civil Rights movement.   A legend in many ways.

To that great Sweetheart from Venezuela in the sky.  RIP, Harry.

Alongside Sam Cooke and JEJ, you'd be hard pressed to find a more impactful Civil Rights advocate in showbusiness at the time than Harry Belafonte.

He was a brilliant songwriter and singer.  And I know there's a sentiment in this country right now not to mix politics with entertainment nor sports.  But Belafonte exhausted every ounce of his success and notoriety to work tirelessly to make a more just society, assist Africa and Caribbean, and even changed the way children perceive race during his famous Muppet Show performance that Jim Henson loved so much, he called it his favorite and his estate asked Harry to perform it as his funeral.

Belafonte lived a very rich and full life, never rested on his laurels, never stopped advocating for the helpless, never stopped caring about others.  A very interesting ethnic mix, most people think of him as black or caribbean.  He was Scottish, Jamaican, Dutch, Black by one generation removed from Africa proper, and Sephardic Jew.  Raised Catholic, he lived the word of Jesus and not one of condemnation and animosity.  Also served 8 years in the United States Navy, on both sides of WWII.

My favorite story about him is he's working as a janitor in a NY theater after the Navy.  Harry befriends another struggling black fellow who also loves the theater.  They can only afford one seat per show.  So one of them would go until intermission, tell the other one what's happening in the play in the bathroom, and the other friend would sit in on the second half of the show.  They alternated like this for some time until both had enough money to buy their own full seats.  That man went on to some acclaim in the Civil Rights movement, and did some acting on the side-Mr. Sidney Poitier.

Belafonte was so low-key that most Americans even folks our age appreciate the live he led, and the manner in which he led it.  Make yourself an island drink tonight with a little umbrella, and toast to justice and to Harry.

I do love me some Belafonte.  Do yourself a favor and put "Jump in the Line" on and see if you don't just feel like tapping your toe while listening to that song.  Then play "Hallelujah, I Lover So" and relax to an simple but elegant ballad.

Jamaica Farewell was always my favorite song of his.

RIP Dude. Only thing I have against him was his support for Papa Doc in Haiti.

And just for giggles. I think you can see he is having a good time. I remember watching this when real young and still love it.

If you like film noir Odds Against Tomorrow is a very good film with Harry Belafonte, Robert Ryan and Ed Begley

I know.  I just thought it was funny, especially knowing this group's affinity for OF.

his trash TV really had an impact on the culture, unfortunately.

If this was fake, this would be comedy gold.  But as far as I know, this was real, which makes it heartbreaking for those kids.

Just because you can make a TV show doesn't mean you should.

he made himself rich off trash tv and contibuted to the decline of the standard immensely. I don't think Fox News gets as low as they are without Jerry Springer, where TV interaction becomes dumbed down pro-wrestling.

I know you are bagging on Jerry here, but quoting Maury's stuff is a bit diengenuous.

Jerry's schtick was the rando fights on set, and the audience chanting at the morons who were on stage.      but they only did that after their ratings went through the roof after a fight happened during taping.  They filmed what the moronic audience wanted.

Jenny Jones perfected the ambush show so much she helped get a guy killed,  Oprah wasnt always the happy happy joy joy woman we have known the last 25 years when she was giving everyone a car... she absolutely rolled in the filth

Maury is who took the genre to the whole other fucking level with the DNA tests.

I remember they had a woman who ended up testing something like 15 dudes to try and find the dad- which they never did.

I mean holy shit, after the 2nd or 3rd time, Maury knew everytime she was going to be on the show it was going to be a ratings smash because it allowed the audience to say to themselves.... "that girl such a ho how many dudes she sleep with in a 1 month timeframe" and the larger that negative father number got the more fucking outrageous the show got.

Maury?

Oh crap, you're right the DNA schtick was the other guy, not Springer.   In my brain, both these guys are filed away in the same trash bin. Two sides to the same coin.

Thanks. I’ve heard a ton of music stories, but I’d never heard that one. What an odd and wonderful crossing of the musical paths.

I would be ashamed of myself if I knew this much about trashy talk shows.

I would tend to agree, but in Bosnia Jerry was one of the only shows in English broadcasted. You can only watch so much Sky News.

Geraldo came close when his nose was broken, but Jerry took it to the next level

Wow, Edmund Fitzgerald?  I loved her voice.  /astonishingtalesofthesea

Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind is a fantastic documentary.  It's on Prime, Roku, Freevee, Tubi and some others.
