January 2, 20232 yr One of the best to do it, so lucky to have him at the helm all those years. RIP Coach Gus
January 2, 20232 yr He was the coach when I was in school. There was no limit to the number of games teams could play, and I was at least 95% off those games. Double headers every day of spring break. He was one of the best to ever coach the game. RIP Coach Gus

RIP Coach Gus His teams were so much fun to watch, any of us who witnessed those teams play should be considered lucky.
January 2, 20232 yr RIP Coach Gus How many times while Coach Gus was here did a Texas base runner at 3rd draw a balk from the pitcher? His teams would always find a way to create a run. Edited January 2, 20232 yr by hornmpa96 Autocorrect sucks
January 2, 20232 yr RIP coach. His team are why I fell in love with Texas baseball. I just thought he was a wizard in the dugout. And he was always so relaxed and cool emotionally. The anti-Augie.
January 2, 20232 yr Damn. He was the coach when I was in school, including law school, when I’d go to 30+ games a season. Later in life, got to be friends with Scott Leon and Wylie Campbell, both of whom have great Gus stories. He was a creature of his times and age, for good and bad, but unquestionably a longhorn legend. Hook ‘em, Gus.
January 2, 20232 yr Popular Post Sad to hear this. My dad and mom were friends with him going to back to his days Coaching at South San and taking them to 6 State titles before coming to UT. ( If you didn't already know, he hung up the phone when Coach Royal contacted him about the job. He thought it was a prank phone call). Such an innovator of small ball (Gus Ball) and was instrumental in the design of Disch Falk after the team stopped playing at Clark Field. He wanted large dimensions and the field to play to the strength of Texas pitching. He was humble yet stern and demanded excellence from the players both on and off the field. A true Texas Longhorn legend has left us. RIP Coach Gus. Say hi to my Dad for me. 🤘
January 2, 20232 yr Popular Post I was very fortunate to play for him. I wasn’t very good and didn’t play very much but the opportunity Coach Gus gave to me changed my life. I owe him so much. RIP Coach. Thank you for everything!!
January 2, 20232 yr My introduction to baseball was due to watching the teams coach put into the College World Series. RIP coach. Edited January 2, 20232 yr by DanTheHorn
January 2, 20232 yr They broke the mold when they made Coach Gus. I have so many fond memories of watching his teams while at school and after. RIP Coach.
January 2, 20232 yr I wish I had gotten the chance to meet him. Never happened. One day I went to an appointment at my dermatologist just north of campus, and in the waiting room who was there? Gus. And Jody Conradt. Didn't seem like the right time & place to introduce myself to either one of them. "Hey, how's that eczema responding to treatment?"
January 2, 20232 yr RIP to a Longhorn Legend. Let's dedicate the BB season to him. Former Texas baseball coach Cliff Gustafson dies at 91 (click2houston.com)

I will forever be grateful for his input on the design of the visiting bull pen walls that could easily be scaled with a back pack full of iced down beer or by my girlfriend in a miniskirt. On more than one occasion I exited the ballpark by going back over the wall out of respect and possibly because I was pretty drunk.

I'm not sure how many cans of beer I saw getting tossed into the bleachers near the right field foul pole, but it wasn't just a few. I might have participated.
January 2, 20232 yr Thank you Coach Gus for legendary Longhorn baseball! Outstanding baseball coach and great Longhorn!
