I think the point about lamenting the Raiders sucking so long is that they are one of the franchises in the NFL that has a real brand cachet, and about whom you can say the league is better  when they are good because of their historical significance. This applies to teams like the Cowboys, Steelers, 49ers, and Green Bay that have large fan appeal outside their regional base. It’s similar to the concept of the blue blood programs in CFB.

Maybe it’s just because I’m older and remember the 70’s (a little) and 80’s, but even if you weren’t a fan (I wasn’t) the Raiders were the bad ass team of the league.  They were more like a biker gang that played football on Sundays, with big personalities, dirty play, and an exciting brand of throw it deep offense and nasty defense. NFL Films had a song specifically about them with an accompanying video that still gives me chills, “The Autumn Wind”:

Nobody has ever said “the NFL is better when the Cardinals are good,” or the Seahawks, Falcons, Panthers, etc. Some franchises matter more than others, and I think the Raiders are one of them, but maybe that’s just because of my age. Maybe that brand is just gone forever for fans under 40, but you’ll forgive those of us who still remember it and place a value on it.

It's funny you mention the Cardinals. They're a charter member of the NFL and one of the oldest professional football franchises in the United States.

Yep. And they have never been relevant outside Chicago, St. Louis, or Phoenix when they were playing in those cities.

The Cardinals merchandising in Endor is through the roof though...

Excellent post, btw.

Never a dull moment with the 70s Raiders... Immaculate Reception, Sea of Hands, Holy Roller, let alone the cavalcade of characters on their roster.

I don’t disagree with the sentiment, but I wonder how much the moving between LA and Oakland and now LV has diminished the franchise perception in this way. If the Packers had moved to St Louis, for example, seems like their cachet would be diminished. Watching the Raiders play in a sterile indoor stadium in LV…well it’s different than the Coliseum in Oakland, which added to their “persona”.

Vrabel reaches agreement with Pats, per Schefter

Good hire.  Pats will be back to contenders.

Steelers started 7-2, then 10-3, closing out the regular season with 4 losses to end at 10-7.  Their schedule strength was back-loaded, but 1 win in the final 4 games (Eagles, Ravens, Chiefs, Bengals) may have shown *some* signs for optimism.  In 3 of those games, they were totally outclassed.  As they were last night.

The Steelers are in a real bind, in that they seem to be stuck at 8-10 wins (only 1 season over 10 wins since 2017 - and they lost in the wild-card round).  It's not a bad place to be, but there are NO signs it could get better before it gets worse.  The DL and LB are aging and they've always had problems at DB.  The OL struggles to run block and the RB room is just "ok."  Their best WR - George Pickens - seems to be a moron and has largely been neutralized in the past 5 games - and he's had a case of the drops.  Moreover, he said he was not optimistic about the offense going forward - in a post-game interview YESTERDAY.

At QB, both Wilson and Fields are free agents.  Wilson has looked good at times, and I think he's still getting paid by Denver, so he could be an option.  But that just kicks the can down the road.

Tomlin is a good coach and I think he gets more wins out of his rosters than most other coaches could.  However, his coordinator hires have been suspect.  DC Teryl Austin (yes, the same guy who was the supposed DC for Urban Meyer, if Meyer arrived here) looks like he gets out-coached.  Arthur Smith is just OK, but his system is predicated on effective rushing.  Don't think you can fire Tomlin, but something needs to improve.

Time of possession last night: 40 to 20 in favor of Baltimore.  20 to 10 in both halves and 299 yards rushing for Baltimore.  Hard to win a game like that.

Yep. Good, young QB, lots of draft capital including the 4th pick, $133M in cap space. They’re well set up for a quick turnaround.

I agree with this. The move to LA did broaden their appeal somewhat in popular culture, but the way the No Fun League has been for two decades simply will not allow a team with the personality and mystique of the old Silver and Black to exist, even if they did win a couple of Super Bowls. I bet merchandising and ratings would go up if they became relevant again, however, in a way that a surge by the Texans or the Bengals would not.

Good hire for them. Surprised they didn’t hire him last year. And pissed that the Bears stayed with Eberflus.

Steelers are also in a really tough division. Probably need to see what Fields has or draft a QB and let Russ caretake again for a year.

I doubt that. Head coaching jobs are hard to come by and Patriots job is a pretty good one with the young QB, cap space and draft capital. . Regardless, it was always going to be Vrabel.

Tomlin is obviously a really good coach but they have been meh at QB since Roethlisberger broke down. Hard to see a way out without a total teardown but they’ve never really been a franchise willing to do that.

I remember when rappers were wearing LA Raider gear in videos. Wonder if that would have continued and they become full LA icons if they don’t move back to Oakland. The two LA teams now don’t feel very LA at all, same with Raiders who now feel like just another LV attraction.

The Chargers there is just Blasphemous. They belong in San Diego. The Rams just feel like a fake identity, I know it might be minor but how they look has a lot to do with it for me.

Rams definitely feel LA.  Flashy, bright colors, good looking coach etc.

Well, maybe except the Raiders.

I think the Raiduhs should have moved to LA with the Rams to rebuild the LA market. Chargers should have remained in San Diego, with the Spanos family forced to sell and a new owner found who would fund most of a stadium on their own.  Those Greek mobsters never did a fucking thing for San Diego.

add on the Ghost to the Post...

Dolphins fan my whole life, those 70s and 80s Raiders cost the Fins some SB appearances.  Have always despised them, but that comes with respect as well.  Dan Marino imo is the best pure passer that I've watched in my lifetime but if I wasn't a Finfan it would probably be Kenny Stabler.  That guy was unreal.  I think I saw somewhere that with adjusted stats he was the highest rated QB in NFL history or something like that.  Davis rode Rozell hard and dry til his death and Rozell's ghost has cursed them ever since.

Former #Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy has decided to focus on the 2026 hiring cycle and will not coach in the NFL this season, sources tell me and @RapSheet.

McCarthy, who has made the playoffs 12 times in 18 seasons, is expected to be a strong candidate a year from now.

Good luck in ‘26, bro.
