Texas is pre-season ranked #8 in the nation and picked to finish 2nd in the Big12 behind TCU.

This might be the most experienced team we've ever had. On our roster we have

3 fifth year players led by Cleeve Harper
4 fourth year players led by Eliot Spizzirri
1 third year player (Micah Braswell)
1 second year player (Pierre-Yves Bailly)
1 first year player (Lucas Brown)

Last year's team was riddled with lingering injuries. If this team can stay healthy, they have a chance to do some damage in the league and in the NCAA tournament.

First match for Texas is @ #12 Florida tomorrow morning. Florida is the opposite of our team in experience, as they have 5 freshmen, 1 sophomore, and only 3 upper classmen. Their top player from last year, Ben Shelton, turned pro after last season. Their new comer to look out for is freshman Jonah Braswell, who is brother of current Texas tennis player Micah Braswell. Would be an entertaining match to see those two play against each other.

Texas opened with a 5-2 road win against Florida. We took the doubles point and quickly won 2 singles matches to lead the overall score 3-0. Texas won 2 of the 4 remaining singles matches to clinch the win.

Ranked No. 13 in singles, Woldeab helped the Longhorns defeat No. 13 Florida, 5-2, to open dual match play. Woldeab, a 2022 doubles All-American with Eliot Spizzirri, began the day by earning a doubles point with new partner Pierre-Yves Bailly as they downed the 43rd-ranked duo of Jonah Braswell and Lukas Greif, 6-1, to be the first team off the court. The junior then picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Greif at No. 4 singles to once again be the first off the court and give the Longhorns a 2-0 lead.

Woldeab garnered a Big 12 weekly award in 2022 and now has earned two in his career.

Spizzirri looking amazing and back to full health. Really was expecting to be wowed by Quinn, tough start to the year for him

Nice win, including some top 10 singles wins (#1 player)

4-3 the final

"Bailly, a 17-year-old from Belgium, who, like Geller, made two junior slam finals to finish No. 1, hasn't ruled out joining his brother Pierre-Yves, who was the 2022 Big 12 Freshman of the Year at Texas. "

This article makes it sound like Gilles Bailly is either coming to Texas or going pro. (For those who don't know, the author has been a reporter in junior tennis world for decades.)

4-1 win over Cal. Losing the doubles point is always concerning but we responded strong in singles. Micah Braswell was also back in the lineup today which was good to see

Siem looks physically much stronger this year

Spizzirri also has his backhand back for this season

Hopefully good indicators for the year. No more injuries please!

We have another tough test against #24  USC tomorrow at the indoor UT courts. Their top 3 singles lines are better on paper than our top 3 singles lines, but Texas has the edge lines 4-6.  Doubles point will be key to get.

Also of note, USC's assistant coach is Texas-Ex Liz Begley who played for Texas from 2010-2014. I think the indoor courts opened just after she graduated, so I'm sure she'll enjoy touring the facility.

Ignore the above post, that was meant for the womens tennis thread

Men play @ #2 Ohio State on Sunday. That is a match that we definitely aren't supposed to win, but will be a good warm-up for the ITA indoors

  • Author

Ohio State won 4-0 and it wasn't even that close. Ohio State swept the doubles point and won all 6 first sets in singles. Our super senior Chih Chi Huang lost 6-0, 6-0 in his match. Texas didn't win a single set all day.

ITA indoors up next

  • Author

I lied about ITA indoors being next. Texas def. Pepperdine 5-2 today. Home match against Arizona again on Sunday, and THEN next weekend we head to Chicago for the ITA indoors

  • Author

Texas def. Wake Forest 4-0 in round 1 of the ITA indoors. Next up for us is Ohio State. We played them a couple weeks ago and couldn't manage to win a single set. Hopefully we put up a fight this time.

BOOM!
Texas def. #1 Ohio State 4-3.

After not winning a set the last time we played Ohio State a couple weeks ago, Texas wins 4 singles matches to take the win. We play Michigan tomorrow in the semi finals of this tournament. Way to go Horns!

Wow, they came back "from the depths of hell" to win that. Awesome.

It does feel like we have toyed with Ohio State over the years. It’s becoming a fun little men’s tennis rivalry

Took dubs against Michigan

Singles not going well so far.  Already lost two first sets and down in two others.

3-3

Spizzirri up 5-2 in third set

Spizzirri clinches it!
Texas def. Michigan 4-3.

Texas will play defending champions TCU in an all Big12 finals tomorrow afternoon. This is Texas' first finals appearance in the ITA indoor tournament finals

TCU won 4-0. Spizzirri and McDonald were the only guys that won a set today. The last 2 long 4-3 matches Texas had really did them in

We overachieved to reach the finals.

No shame in losing to #3 after taking out #1 and #4

A great showing

Yep, Texas is not an indoor team historically which explains why this was Texas’ first trip to the indoors finals. Also historically, the winner of the Indoor tournament rarely wins the NCAA tournament, so on the positive side we avoided that distinction

TCU has two Americans on their roster.

That’s 2 more than a lot of D1 teams.

I assume the college athletic scholarship is not a thing in Europe.  And that there aren’t enough good US players to go around.

Correct. Generally speaking, you’ll see the smaller D1 programs load up on foreign players since the top American prospects will sign with a power program. A middling foreign tennis player >> middling US tennis player, and that’s just due to the pool size. Tennis is a global sport that is popular just about everywhere so that’s why college tennis recruiting is global.

Texas wins a nail biter against NCST 4-3. We lost doubles, and singles matches from Spizzirri and Woldeab. Very fortunate to pull out the W

Kind of buried the lead there that we fell behind 3-1 (not just "lost doubles and Spizzirri and Woldeab single matche") and rallied to win 4-3.  NCST is ranked #20.  Nailbiter indeed.

Texas pulls off the road win over #1 TCU by a score of 4-1. Too bad this meeting was non-conference!

Looks we bookended the top 10 with wins this week. 4-1 over #10 USC to follow up the same score over #1 TCU on Wednesday

  • Author

I think we should be ranked #1 in the nation on Wednesday.  Conference play begins next, and aside from TCU the conference is pretty weak this year. At worst we should finish 4-1 in the Big12.

I was wondering how Berque would turn out after losing the interim tag.

Elite 8, Sweet 16, and now #1 this season. Not sure I would call it a huge success yet but it certainly hasn't been a failure either.
