January 24, 20232 yr My wife has lived in the US for almost 15 years hates pickup truck drivers and I understand her reasoning. Those little dicked fuckers with the really jacked up trucks, often with wheel spacers too love to get up on people’s asses on the highway. There is definitely a wannabe macho/small dick energy about them. Not to mention the diesel assholes that do the rolling coal bullshit. It’s funny working in O&G. Most office buildings have parking garages, but many of these trucks won’t fit. So they end up in uncovered parking lots adjacent to the parking garage. Half these guys (and I am average height) need a fucking rope ladder to get into their pavement princesses. I had two Tacomas, absolutely loved them. I wouldn’t own another brand of truck. Currently have a 4runner. Tacomas are more than enough truck for 75% of the pick up driving population. Plus they aren’t pieces of shit so you won’t be at the mechanic.

I just can’t imagine wanting to drive one daily if you didn’t have to because of work. I guess a lot has to do with where you live. Most places in Texas have parking for miles and street parking is something you just don’t do often. I was in DC a few years back for about two months and would rent cars on weekends for errands and stuff. I had a deal where they basically gave whatever was on their lot for the price of a compact in exchange for renting every weekend. One weekend it was a crew cab F-150 and I loved it till the moment I had to street park it. Forget difficult to park, most spades I had to just drive past— if anyone’s ass or nose wasn’t lined up just right, it simply wouldn’t fit. East Coast parallel parking is an Olympic level sport.

A tailgating truck isn’t just on your ass, they’re looming over you and at night they are lighting your world up. I’d be happy if we just went away from the “angry insectoid” faces they all have back to a friendly truck, “I’m here to work” truck.

The older smaller trucks are become boutique / collector items now How exactly does driving something that half the rest of the people drive equate to status symbol cool? If I was worried about status, there are way more vehicles out there that would get second looks at the red light over a truck. Also, simple solution for your second problem, trade your Tundra for any number of the smaller trucks that are now on the market. Problem solved. It’s such a strange discussion worrying about what other people drive and their reasons for driving it. I agree the 2500’s have gotten too big which is why I’m getting out of it. However, I never sat in my F150’s thinking to myself boy I wish this thing was smaller. 2 kids, 2 dogs, a truck has basically been our open bed SUV for the last 17 years of having kids. Now, they do their own things so I may go a different direction and keep an old truck for truck duties.
January 24, 20232 yr I'll note that at my office in an ag business, outside of the old guy, I am the only person that doesn't drive a full sized truck with my Bronco sport. With the ability to lay seats down and a rubberized cargo area, I have as good of a cargo area as them, and I can work it up and down some of the narrow trails at the various parks on the River Bluffs, and leave usable space in my garage. For practicality I don't see what I would gain by paying significantly more for a truck.

And in the case of Dodge, it’s a predatory lending company. /noCR/ Light duty trucks are subject to easier emissions standards than cars. Due to their size and that exemption, They are easier and cheaper to engineer, update, and produce, relative to cars, across a manufacturing line over time. With marketing, they sell for far more money and with much greater profit margins. It’s an easy decision for the companies to push trucks as the ultimate product. Until the US closes the light truck exemption, and/or gas prices get and stay high, this trend will continue /noCR/ I know we’re focused on pickups, but as you note the SUV is also classified as a light truck. I like the old-school feel and THAT is a true road trip cruiser. In 2003 my great aunt passed away and left me her '87 Grand Marquis. Garage kept, showroom floor condition and only 20,000 miles. My buddies named it the Pimp Mobile. I quickly sold the Nissan Frontier I had at the time and it became my daily driver for a few years. It was like a rolling living room furniture set. I had some really, really good times in that rig.
January 24, 20232 yr I had a 2012 F150 up until a month or so ago when I handed it over to my son that just went to college up in Iowa. He had a little fender bender in his vehicle just before heading off to college in late December and the body shops here were taking appointments for March. So, I've been driving a piece of shit 2003 Highlander with 230K miles on it and a ding in the front passenger side fender for the last month. It was time for me to look into getting a "newer" vehicle, so I wasn't too upset by the turn of events. Hey, I was going to get a new truck! Then I started looking. Holy shit! The price of new trucks, similar to my previous one, has put me in the market for something else. I'm cheap and just can't justify spending 50K and up on a truck. I work from home and the only driving I do is in and around town dropping kids off at school and other functions. I could actually use a truck, but I won't pay that much money for a new one and I'm also not going to pay 30K for used one with 100K+ miles on it. I'm getting an SUV and on the occasion that I need to haul something, I'll pull a trailer.

January 24, 20232 yr The only thing that really annoys me about the newer big trucks is the blinding headlights. People driving minivans, Prii, and Teslas piss me off at about the same rate as people driving big trucks. Bad drivers are bad regardless of their chosen mode of transportation.

Ironically (again No CR), the Obama administration's (and to a lesser degree CARB) attempting to improve auto safety and efficiency at the same time ended up pushing both manufacturers and buyers into less efficient vehicles. It wasn't by design, but it's easier to make the safety requirements in a larger vehicle than it is in a VW Golf. The companies make more money on the crossovers/SUVs/trucks, and the beancounter, marketing, and sales people took it from there. I'm as guilty as the next: I bought a VW Alltrack because I wanted the extra bit of lift and all wheel drive (despite the fact it's cheaper to just switch back and forth from winter to summer tires and you will get much better traction). The extra weight of the Haldex knocks about 5 miles off the MPG. 18 minutes ago, Celery Man said: The venn diagram of... whatever the 2023 version of Ed Hardy t-shirts is and jacked up trucks overlap is probably entirely contained within the larger circle of asshole drivers. January 24, 20232 yr I bought a new 2022 Canyon Denali last summer and I love it. I’ve always driven larger SUVs (sold my wife’s hatchback and gave her the Pathfinder for trips and room for kids, etc), but even though this vehicle is smaller than what I’m used to, I don’t know that I’d even want an F150 or sierra 1500 right now. I work downtown in Houston so dealing with traffic is super easy, it fits in my garage, gas mileage isn’t bad, and I have more utility with the bed than I did with the SUVs. I wouldn’t mind a little more comfort in the back seats, but I only plan to haul my kids back there anyway. Anytime we need room for adults we’re taking the pathfinder.
