Got in trouble when he didn't.
March 3, 20196 yr Texas Baseball is best when it has a designated closer. A guy who owns the responsibility. Street, Cox, Knebel, Wood, Thames, etc... I’d like to see Pierce designate someone. Who is the guy? Edited March 3, 20196 yr by Enfield

Great heat on the fastball, and impeccable location on breaking pitches and changeup. He had 'em chasing their tails trying to figure out what was coming next yesterday.
March 3, 20196 yr Author Quintanilla and Diaz are made for the closer role. Both pound the zone and have swing and miss stuff. It's a good problem to have.
March 3, 20196 yr No. I’m just kidding. We have actually sucked when we have a designated closer. Our worst teams have had designated closers. We are way better just being random. The comment was to the “who is he?” the night or morning after we saw a kid mow down the opposition in a closer role.

He is really good and certainly could do it. May be best in a starting role or long relief. Diaz, Bryant, other options exist. Have to have an attitude and leadership to really be great, IMO.
March 3, 20196 yr He is really good and certainly could do it. May be best in a starting role or long relief. Diaz, Bryant, other options exist. Have to have an attitude and leadership to really be great, IMO. He seemed to have it against the (former) #1 team in the nation in an early season defining series. He had a nice lead so it may take more to see but those strikeouts and his aggression toward the strike zone were totally impressive.

March 3, 20196 yr Phil Haig seems to be pretty good with the pitchers. I look at his bio and he’s been a volunteer coach with DP for the past 7 years. How does he manage that financially?

Also , he was booted off his UI baseball team.

March 4, 20196 yr Author Life doesn’t get easier with Stanford. 9-1 and tied with a top 25 Fullerton team in the 8th inning of game 3. Stanford won the first two games of the series on the road. 2-2 would be a good result.
March 4, 20196 yr He didn't want this to be publicized, but I heard that Wayne Graham was in attendance this weekend (he and his wife now live in Austin) and he spoke to the team before Friday's game.
March 4, 20196 yr Author Graham was at several postseason games last year. I didn't know he lived in Austin but that's cool with the Pierce connection. I'm sure he will be at several Texas games this year. Edited March 4, 20196 yr by texasstrong12

March 4, 20196 yr Finally is right. That will be a fun little Big XII / SEC challenge. It was already announced that aggy will be in the undercard in frisco. I'm cool with that. So cougar high and rice won't be there? I thought they were there every year.
March 4, 20196 yr I'm sure it's been mentioned on here, but on the Texas baseball official pitching stats page it literally has Jack Neely's WHIP listed as "Infinity". It's both kind of mean and hilarious.
March 4, 20196 yr So, about our defensive issues. How much do you think it’s due to practice/emphasis versus pierce just recruiting and playing dudes that can hit as opposed to field? We are definitely a much better hitting team. I can live with some fielding miscues, but it’s weird seeing ut being somewhat sloppy on defense.

Between the outright errors and McCann giving up free bases left and right, there's definitely room for improvement. I'm not going to complain though when we're able to overcome all of that to sweep the #2 team in the country.
March 4, 20196 yr I'd say that playing true freshmen and backups due to injuries and roster churn are the biggest reasons we've had a rough defensive start. Things would be different if Petrinsky and Hamilton were healthy.
March 4, 20196 yr We didn’t even see Diaz all weekend for some reason. After only using fields and Q the first two games, I was sure that it would be Diaz, madden, and Bryant on Sunday in some order. Didnt expect bocchi and the lefty, even to match up.
March 4, 20196 yr Author Diaz is just now getting healthy. He's not going to throw much early in the season. Diaz had a couple setbacks with the injury from last year so they are being conservative with him. Edited March 4, 20196 yr by texasstrong12
March 4, 20196 yr Wouldn’t his ERA be infinity also? Officially showing 99.0 Must be using less than 1/3 IP as that would be an ERA of ~81, but less than dividing by zero.
March 4, 20196 yr Good news for him is that his stats will improve tremendously when he records an out, then again when he records another.
March 4, 20196 yr Especially when that point moves one spot to the left. Really good when it moves two spots. Edited March 4, 20196 yr by Lobo
