OK, this is fucking weird.

Arizona finished their Dodgers series yesterday afternoon, flew to STL, played the Cardinals tonight... and both teams have the day off tomorrow and they'll play again Saturday and Sunday???

Damn, looks like our boy Knebel blew out his hamstring throwing a pitch, had to be carried off.

Looks like he is gone for at least a month.

Tampa and Boston are doing the same thing, as well as some other teams I’m sure with only 9 games tomorrow. Very odd.

There’s always a bunch of off-days in April to try and account for the inclement weather still present in many parts of the country. If you didn’t know that already you might be a very unintelligent person.

Twins/Pirates had the same scheduling, pretty stupid for a 2 game series to have an off day in between games.

#260

To open the season, they need to schedule more of these games on the west coast and southern states. These rainouts are becoming a beating.

gonna be about 34 in Minny when the Astros are there early next week

When's the last time there were fewer than 10 scheduled games on a Friday during the regular season?

not 8 days into the season, and not on a friday.  insane that they're making certain stadiums give up a friday box office/concession.  typically the season starts and everyone plays 3 games over 4 days.  that's likely what you (and other highly intelligent people) are referring to.  find me a friday with 10+ teams with a scheduled day off and i'll confirm your iq level.

Obviously still early, but I wonder if the shift (including the Astros' softball shift) has gotten into Joey Gallo's head a bit.  He's not pulling the ball at all so far and the contact quality on his fly balls has been trash.

The new CBA adding extra off days is why we’re seeing this. Same reason the entire sport started last Thursday

I would have presumed an extra four days off would mean more off Mondays and Thursdays, not Fridays.

And if the point is to accommodate weather issues, it only makes sense to put off days at the end of a series, not after the first game of it.

I read somewhere that there were a lot of scheduled off days last Friday (day after opening day) and this Friday in case of bad weather to let every team have two chances to get in their home opener.  Apparently the teams with scheduled off days today had their home openers yesterday.  I still think it's stupid but I guess that's an explanation.  Supposedly there are no scheduled Friday off days the rest of the season.

Still seems like it'd make more sense to just do a Thurs-Sat series (or leave Monday open for both teams). Skipping Friday only helps you if there is a weather issue on Thursday whereas skipping Sunday or Monday can help if any of the games are rained/snowed out.

This makes a little more sense, and apparently Colorado should have done it.  Daughter just called and said it's 26 degrees, windy, and snowing hard in Golden, CO.

Rockies' home opener scheduled for 3pm.

yeah, having an off day on monday makes the most sense.  if one of the fri/sat/sun gets ppd, you play monday.

Thinking about it some more I bet they're trying to avoid having to refund opening day tickets.  They jack prices way up for opening day now.  If it then gets rain/snowed out and there's a game scheduled the next day, you have to refund the opening day tickets and you've already sold the next day's tickets at regular price.  So you lose your chance for that elevated opening day payday.  If the next day is a scheduled off day, no refunds and the people that can't make it are shit out of luck.

Imagine if someone said that he could be an All Star this year. Imagine.

Now imagine that idiot said it after one inning.

The post-Knebel experience is not going well right now on FS1.

Only one ball was at all well hit so that was mostly a combination of bad batted ball luck and bad defense.

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/23055073/pittsburgh-pirates-99-year-old-usher-phil-coyne-retires-81-seasons

PITTSBURGH -- The oldest usher in the major leagues is calling it a career after 81 years on the job.

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced Friday that 99-year-old Phil Coyne, who has been working home games for the organization since 1936, will not return this season. He turns 100 later this month.

Coyne worked thousands of games for the Pirates through the decades, following along as the franchise moved from Forbes Field to Three Rivers Stadium to PNC Park. Coyne worked in sections 26 and 27 down the third-base line at PNC Park. The team gave him a No. 99 jersey with his name on the back last summer, and the Pittsburgh City Council designated Aug. 29, 2017, as "Phil Coyne Day."

Pirates President Frank Coonelly thanked Coyne for serving fans "with incredible grace and distinction" through the years. Coyne's only sabbatical came when he served in the armed forces in World War II.

The team plans to throw a party for Coyne and his family and friends on April 27 to celebrate Coyne's 100th birthday.

3 run homer to walk it off on the 12th pitch of the ab.  Nice little 6 for 7 night.

Dodgers are 2-6
