SIAP I just saw that Marcus Spears Jr. is the #1 ranked PF for 2027. Insane how athletic that family is. Is there a chance that he follows his sister to the 40?

Looking him up, that's the first time I've heard there's a high school in DFW named Dynamic Prep.

And now see that Jermaine O'Neal is coaching that team.   That's more volleyball ties.

Hoops Recruiting: Texas doing well with two 5-stars

With 4-star++ SG/W Bo Ogden (Austin/Westlake) in the boat, Sean Miller and staff are full steam ahead with the two top targets remaining on the board.

Austin Goosby ...
Texas continues to battle Duke and BYU for 5-star CG Austin Goosby (Melissa, Texas/High). The 6-foot-5.5 versatile guard has wrapped up the official visit process, and is now getting into evaluating options and making a decision. OTF has Texas in the lead, with a decision expected prior to late October.

Cameron Williams ...
The Longhorns continue to quietly be positioned in a good spot for 6-foot-11 power forward and future NBA lottery pick Cameron Williams (Phoenix, Az./St. Mary's). Williams and family absolutely loved their OV to Texas last month. Williams has continued to tell people behind the scenes that he really liked Miller, and the city of Austin. Williams made an OV to Duke last weekend, and has already made trips to Purdue and SMU in addition to Texas. He has trips scheduled to USC and Arizona the next two weekends. OTF hears an Arizona vs. Texas decision is where this is headed, but we don't want to discount Duke in any recruitment in which the Blue Devils are all in.

Five-Star SF Anthony Thompson: Thompson will make his college choice next Tuesday, October 21st between Indiana, Kentucky, Texas, Ohio State, Michigan, and North Carolina. From the sounds of it, this is coming down to a battle between Indiana and Ohio State, with Texas fighting as well. This one is too close to call.
Five-Star PF Cam Williams: Williams has visited SMU, Texas, Purdue, Duke, and heads to Arizona this weekend. His visit to USC was pushed back until November 6-8 and his trip to Kentucky may not be rescheduled. As of today, I would classify this a three-team race between Arizona, Duke, and Texas.
Five-Star PG Deron Rippey Jr.: Rippey is currently considering seven schools (in no particular order) — Louisville, North Carolina, Miami, Syracuse, Kentucky, Tennessee, Duke, Texas, and NC State. He has three visits remaining (Duke, Tennessee, NC State) and then plans to cut his list down. There isn’t a clear favorite but NC State and Tennessee are among those that come up frequently. Rippey is taking his time throughout this process and it could take awhile to play out.

I hate the right hash mark, I will go to my grave bitching about the right hash mark

Since nothing was posted I assumed they didn't pick us. I checked and it was USC

God, I hope we can beat out those powerhouse programs

You see these kinds of recruiting battles more and more, it's really not us vs them given he can just go to one of the others, immediately start and have a way bigger opportunity, then go for a payday from a bigger school

Sterling is a big-time shooter off the basketball who made 44% of his threes, on over 8 attempts per game, during the Pro16 season. He has extreme gravity as a floor spacer (12-18 on open catch-and-shoot threes), but is also a tough shot-maker off the bounce. He’s a limited athlete who can get swallowed up in the lane at times, but a good ball-handler who is very adept at holding his dribble and probing until he gets just enough separation for his pull-up. He’s much more limited at the rim and actually shot a lower percentage inside the arc than he did beyond it. For whatever physical gifts he may lack, he compensates not just with skill, but intangibles and feel for the game. He passes and cuts well, all while understanding what his niche is, has solid positional size, innate toughness and competitiveness.

Joe Sterling is a 6-4, 180-pound Combo Guard from Encino, CA.

The kid should go to UCSB if we don’t buy him and stash him.

I have been to the UCSB & UNM campuses, I know where Washington State is on a map and I have seen “Field of Dreams”.

He 100% should go to UCSB, but then again… with an Argentine passport since 2013 (after having lived in Buenos Aires for 6+ years at that point), I am partial to (1) gauchos, (2) beautiful women, and (3) living on the water’s edge.

He’s from Encino, so he can just hop on the 101 and his mom can be stuffing his laundry into the washing machine in just over an hour if he times his drive right.

I cannot express how little I wanted to go to college in driving range of my family. (Which counterintuitively ended up improving our relationship).

Think Dakorien Moore or Jamie Ffrench, proximity can be a negative.

The wife is from SB. God, I love getting to visit there.

Anyways, he's Texas bound. The Texas roster is going to look like historical Duke soon - and we're not talking just walk ons haha.

Hopefully Bald Mamba or AR15 2.0. Shoots 44% percent from three: "Sterling is a big-time shooter off the basketball who made 44% of his threes, on over 8 attempts per game, during the Pro16 season."

Yeah, I'll take that clip, especially on that n value.

Having lived in Santa Monica, “the hills above Beverly Hills” (a.k.a. “Beverly Hills postal”… 90210” or “Benedict Canyon… but really San Isidro Canyon”), Hollywood near Paramount Studios (a.k.a. “The edge of Koreatown” or “Larchmont” or “EaLaWeKoTo” or “Hancock Park adjacent”…), Manhattan Beach, Cheviot Hills, and Altadena… for about 10 of the last 27 years, this skit warmed my heart when I first saw it while living in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Several mistakes were made while giving directions, but the theme that discussing routes taken (pre smart phones) when people gathered could not be more accurate. It was the first place I had lived where girls knew routes, shortcuts, and streets/lights to avoid about as well as boys did.

PS- Since Goleta (where UCSB’s campus is located) is on the other side of  Santa Barbara from Encino, getting home would likely be closer to an hour and a half than an hour, even when hitting 80+ mph at all opportune times.

Oh I'm sure there are a lot of mistakes.  They just rattled off random streets.  Hilarious skit as someone who lives out here.

Mormon money is too much

I don't know what kind of money we are talking about, but it seems weird that BYU could double our offer. I guess our push is corporate money, family and proximity, but damn. It makes me concerned about where we fit in money wise with higher rated recruits that are looking at Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, etc.

we don’t fit in very well from what I hear Gerry and see some of the deals teams are dealing.

If we're not going to have even competitive offers, then I'm not sure why we're spending so much time recruiting these 5-stars. I guess Goosby is an exception because of the family connection, but 99% of the time entering these recruitments without being willing to spend big is just wasting time.

So tech in football and byu can buy prospects but we’re Texas and can’t compete with their offers? This doesn’t make sense to me when you’re the jonses. Why are we not buying goosby? We have to have more donor power than schools with individual funders.

We aren't the Joneses in basketball. Never have been. And go look at our football recruiting class and tell us about how we're not buying good recruits.

No, it's not weird. This is not the first time BYU has done this in the past two years. Also, when has Texas ever prioritized basketball to the extent of those teams you listed? Never...

Correct. BYU has gone all in on basketball. Their NIL is currently top-five, maybe top-three. They have unique (to say the least) fundraising mechanisms, as well.

Trying to build and maintain top-tier NIL collectives across all major sports is going to dilute some purchasing power somewhere. It just will. Texas is massively competitive in football, baseball, and just about every non-revenue sport. However, in Men's Basketball, we're not even top 10. Shit, we've been in the middle to upper tier of the second third just in the SEC. We're not "The Joneses," and especially not in basketball. If we were, we'd have more than one modern-day FF banner. NIL has allowed more competition and parity among "The Joneses."

BYU has targeted basketball. Tech has targeted football and softball. Texas is trying to sustainability set up every single sport NIL wise. It's happening, but it takes time.

Big day for us

Frankly I'm at the point where I just don't care about what high school recruits we get, even 5 stars, which feel like have worse ROI than simply getting a good player from the portal after the year. At this point you know the deal that you're getting a ridiculous number of transfers every year, probably like 5-8, and the better ones have a greater effect on winning than all but a couple special recruits.
