Gerry said a few weeks ago after Clark committed that Texas and Kingston was never going to happen and it was a mutual decision.

RT didn't offer?

I’m obviously not up to speed - what is the correlation between a big guy committing and a point guard recruit not happening, or are the two unrelated?

Probably just saying that Gerry mentioned the two separate events in the same discussion.  Unrelated to one another.

So, when RT gets fired this will pick up? I don’t follow bball recruiting that closely but I do know that our team sucks and probably won’t win a game in January.

I mean, yeah, we're not good, but we won't a single game? Jesus that's grim.

Don't be a tease. The suffering has to end. I cannot endure another year.

Im trying to find all the posts where yall were applauding all of the Indiana state players. Wow how those were a miss. Color me surprised that you take two from a nit roster and they turn us into a nit team.

It's Rodney Terry Texas Basketball against the #2 team in the country. The mediocrity runs deep.

This all felt very inevitable the day Chris Beard was arrested for domestic assault and Rodney Terry was made the interim coach. I made a post at the time that the team and staff he inherited was built for a deep NCAA run, but if they accomplish that, we'll be stuck with Terry as the permanent head coach and we'll have to start over in 3 to 4 years. That went over like a lead balloon, and rightfully so. But it's still certainly how I saw it, and it's exactly what has come to pass.

We traded an Elite Eight run - of which we don't have exactly a plethora of - for at least two more years of disappointment. 3 if somehow Terry is able to pull a miraculous run to the Sweet 16, which I don't actually think there's any chance of. But if he slides into the tournament, will that be enough?

The rest of the intervening time has been playing out the string.

We'll see who Del Conte goes after next. Chris Beard was a home run hire if it weren't for the domestic assault arrest. Terry's problem is that he doesn't know how to construct a roster. In this day and age of NIL/portal, that's the chief metric. I mean, he has plenty of other issues, too, but that's the fundamental problem. People talk about the fact he's a good recruiter, but recruiting has not been an issue for Texas basketball under several head coaches. Even Wetlich could bring in talent.

Wow man you're a fucking genius. Is this what y'all do in the $9.95 thread? Various "I told you so" routines? SMU is hiring for AD - go throw your name in the ring.

Well, one thing for certain. SMU isn't hiring Chris Del Conte. There was a stupid discussion started, whoever that was.

You can't blame people for working out ways to be excited about a new coach or recruit, even one we were kind of forced to hire. It's new, it's novel, and it feels a lot better than just giving up before the games are played. Eternal optimism is what makes sports fandom fun. (Well, that and actually winning games).

That shit grows old fast and the only thing that matters is w/l. CDC caved to the media pressure and took the interim tag off Terry, which is a mistake that many gm/ad have made. I’m trying to remember the last time that an interim made good and went on to lasting success on their own accord and not riding the success and motivation by the removal of the old regime.

8 hours ago, SL Xpress said:

No.  It wouldn't be the first time CDC canned someone and/or forced them to take another job, despite making the tournament.  That is the bare minimum expectation at Texas.  CDC expects his programs to be in the second or third weekend, not barely making it as an 11 seed and getting dog walked in the first round.

There is no excitement around the program - none.  Vic's teams have had more demand than RT's game against #1/2 Alabama.

The Moody Center is too badass for Terry to keep running out there. Go money whip a top tier coach or bring in Ivey.

CDC's 3 biggest mistakes so far:

1. Removing interim tag from RT and promoting to full time HC

2. Tom Herman vote of confidence press release

3. "LEVERAGE" NIL program

Outside of those 3 things, he's been lights out.

It took me one second to come up with the name Dabo Swinney. I spent no further time in thinking about other answers simply because I dismiss your premise in its entirety. Some guys have it and some don’t.

The people in control of the spigot stated that the trajectory has to be steady and/or positive by season’s end. That means round of 32 or better. If he doesn’t get there, excepting someone’s change of heart, he’s gone.

And I’ve been told repeatedly that the Drum energy levels at Moody for men’s basketball are as big of a problem as any, to your point.

Or steady crashing directly into a cliff side? Those are the second most disturbing Air Disasters episodes, surpassed only by the ones with midair collisions.

Give me mid-air collision every single time. There's a good chance you won't see it coming and if you're lucky, there's a gigantic explosion upon impact resulting in instant death. You'll see the cliff coming and you will have to reconcile inevitable death for short moments that will feel like agonizing eternity. But I'd also take the cliff over engine failure and crashing into the ground.

I said last night - Berque was a great interim promotion for CDC, leading the team to a title in his interim season, runner up last year and we have been elite top 10 every year under him. And he’s had to constantly turn over the roster due to players going pro or graduating.

CDC is 1-for-2 with interim promotions.

He was also a very experienced and successful HC before he came to Texas. Terry was an avg HC at the g5 level and I would say good not great HC at the hs level. Not the same experience or success.

In hindsight, the program would be in a better place if that team fell apart and didn’t make the Elite 8 and we hired a new coach years ago.

But they did, and I’m glad they did, because those players deserved it.

In fairness you or I could take over the tennis team tommorrow and it wouldn’t skip a beat. It’s an individual, highly technical sport. A college coach does absolutely nothing in tennis. They’ve all got private coaches to hone their skills, and there’s no strategy to deploy. It’s nothing like trying to find a team sport coach.

I would think getting a new basketball coach here is an easy sell though. One coach and 2-3 really good transfers can take any team from terrible to competitive.

Dabo Swinney at Clemson is always the first person who comes to mind.

That was only the third Elite Eight Texas has ever made it to in the 64 team tournament era. Some credit has to be given to Terry for holding the team together that year and forging on under unusual circumstances. I never thought he'd be a good head coach on a permanent basis, but I have no qualms with CDC removing the interim tag given the team's success that year. I just know the moment he was promoted I dreaded the possible outcome. But permanent doesn't mean lifetime, so if I lived long enough I'd see another coach take the reins and see what they can do. And now we're almost there.

Not to mention that sure was a fun team to follow. I'll take an Elite Eight for what has transpired since then. We'll move on to someone else. We just don't have many Elite Eights on our resume.

From the ones I've watched or read about, they usually never see the mountain side coming. I read one account of a tourist "round trip" flight from New Zealand to overlooking Antarctica that was really disturbing. It's worth at least the Wikipedia read if you want to be more disturbed about things when you board a plane.

The thread on the basketball board during the interim period was pretty fucking level-headed about what was transpiring at the time. You're posting as if you saw it straight and the rest of us didn't get it. Everyone knew that getting past the Sweet Sixteen meant the following few seasons were probably fucked. There were like two imbeciles on the thread touting Terry. So what should everyone have done? "Take it to the streets" or some such bullshit? Flood the AD with angry phone calls predicting the program's downfall immediately following an Elite 8?

I realize that it is a matter of survival for you that you have to reduce every concept down the most basic, naive, and dipshitted way of thinking about it. You are a simple idiot, so your primitive method makes sense. While I often find it entertaining, it's also sometimes tiring.

CDC didn’t make a mistake on the Tom Herman press release. It had already been decided that Herman was gone when he spoke, but they needed a little more time to sew up the Sark contract. So CDC, in order to keep things from spinning out of control for a few weeks, accurately said that Herman was the coach. The press actually inaccurately reported it as a vote of confidence and as an indication he was staying. Go back and read the exact words CDC used. I am 100% sure that it had already been decided that Herman was going to be fired when CDC spoke

It was 100% a mistake to even put that press release out when he was told not to do so.

It's still arguably early reaturns, and there were some bumps, but Marcus Freeman is another one who was an interim before being named full-time.
