Yeah, the money isn't there for basketball, especially on the HS side. We seem to have more available for the portal, which should be a bigger focus anyway. Same with WR recruiting in HS.
November 10Nov 10 I really dont get this “when were we ever getting 5 stars in basketball?”, “we were never the joneses in basketball”Thinking. What about the classes with Aldridge, Thompson, Bradley, Hamilton, Williams, Joseph, kabongo? Don’t get why we can’t be a football and basketball school?

What about the classes with Aldridge, Thompson, Bradley, Hamilton, Williams, Joseph, kabongo? Don’t get why we can’t be a football and basketball school? All of the top NIL schools in basketball have one or two big patrons. It appears we are lacking that or don’t want to steer football money over to basketball (my information is stale but I had heard from a big football NIL donor we did, in fact, have a couple of donors willing to write big checks for basketball but I never heard them identified and it doesn’t seem to have born out in recruiting). Also, all those Findlay Prep dudes would get 10x today or whatever modest money they might have gotten (allegedly) at the time.

I said we were never among the most competitive in the basketball bag game, nor basketball NIL. I.e., we are not, and have not been, the Joneses in basketball. Edited November 11Nov 11 by MuellerHorn
November 11Nov 11 Gerry this morning: Austin Goosby and Cameron Williams announcements ... Austin Goosby (Melissa, Texas/High) will announce his decision Friday out of Texas and BYU. There will be four hats at the table, but this has been a two horse race for multiple weeks. Goosby really likes the idea of playing at Texas, and attending school at Texas. This is where "college" athletics gets difficult, however. BYU has at least double the NIL on the table. BYU boosters are absolutely all in on basketball. As in, all in. Two family members believe it's tough to turn down NIL as high as 1.5 million because of what it sets up for Goosby's future should basketball not work out for whatever reason. He's likely a two year college player, so this could be up to a 2.5-3 million $$$ decision. Texas has been the favorite for a few weeks, but BYU is making it a very difficult close out for the Longhorns. Five-star and future lottery pick Cameron Williams (Phoenix, Az./St. Mary's) has Duke, Texas and Arizona as three finalists. OTF hears Duke and Texas are ahead of Zona. Duke is very inviting due to Cameron Boozer being gone to the NBA draft following the season, and the impact opportunity that provides. Williams and family really like Texas, Sean Miller and Austin ... but not sure that will overcome Duke is Duke, and the instant impact ability with Boozer exiting after the season. Duke is not an NIL pushover either, to be clear. Edited November 11Nov 11 by MuellerHorn
November 12Nov 12 Damn would hate to miss out on goosby but if that’s his NIL then he’s going to byu. Until we up the money we will see this happen more often. Given our deep nba stars tie in would they not help with this or is that now how it works?
November 12Nov 12 If we miss out on goosby and Williams, especially if both go to Duke, big misses. Need at least one
November 13Nov 13 Gerry Austin Goosby decision date changed ... Five-star CG Austin Goosby (Melissa, Texas/High) was originally scheduled to announce his decision Friday. That is not expected, as of Thursday. OTF expects Goosby to drop a final two on Friday, and announce his decision Monday or Tuesday. If the announcement ends up being Tuesday, it would be because it's his birthday. Texas remains the favorite over BYU. There is at least one person in the circle that has been pushing BYU. Those have been the top two for weeks. Baylor is trying to stay in the fight.

At this point you know the deal that you're getting a ridiculous number of transfers every year, probably like 5-8, and the better ones have a greater effect on winning than all but a couple special recruits. Duke
November 15Nov 15 Seems like goosby wanted duke but Cameron made him rethink so now it’s us or byu? Why else move it back the same day someone else commits?

November 15Nov 15 Seems we've gone through this great debate over HS vs. transfer guys since before there was a portal as we now know it. I continue to believe the better strategy is to build solid multi-year guys with a Trey or Rice sniper type thrown in when you can get one, not replacing 3-5 freshmen starters every year a la Calipari's Kentucky. I'm fairly confident Miller sees it that way, too.
November 17Nov 17 BOOM!!!: 5-star Austin Goosby commits to Texas - Gerry Spoiler BOOM!!!: 5-star Austin Goosby commits to Texas By Gerry Hamilton 57 minutes ago BOOM!!!: 5-star Austin Goosby commits to Texas Texas' top target in the 2026 class committed to the Texas Longhorns Monday. Austin Goosby had been a Texas lean over BYU for weeks, and on Monday the 6-foot-5 combo guard committed to longtime favorite Texas. And he did so on his birthday, and Sean Miller's birthday. The younger brother of Texas starting left tackle Trevor Goosby becomes the fourth commitment in the class, and is ranked among the top 30 prospects in the 2026 cycle. Goosby is a true combo guard with a 6-9 wingspan that has en elite combination of height, length, vertical pop, ball handling and court vision, the understanding of how to effectively turn the corner and get downhill, touch finishing over taller defenders and overall feel for the game. Goosby's recruitment... Goosby made official visits to Texas, BYU, Duke, Baylor, SMU and Miami. He cancelled an OV to UCLA prior to making the visit. He also had considered offers from Kansas, Oklahoma, Arizona State, Florida State, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Kansas State; among others. Texas 2026 recruiting class ... The Texas Longhorns now have a top-10 recruiting class in year one under Miller with the pledge by Goosby. Austin Goosby, 6-5, CG, Melissa (Texas) High - 5-star Bo Ogden, 6-5, SG/W, Austin (Texas) Westlake - 4-star++ Joe Sterling, 6-4, SG, Studio City (Calif.) Harvard-Westlake - 4-star Coleman Elkins, 6-10, PF. Austin (Texas) Blair Academy
November 17Nov 17 The biggest thing with both Ogden and Goosby is that they both have family ties, so makes it more likely they will stick around longer.

November 18Nov 18 We need to get a true PG in the portal, but the best thing about this class is it is bring tall wing shooters into the program. Our shooting so far this season has been average.
