A major fire erupted after a train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, prompting local authorities to issue a shelter in place on February 3.

This footage, posted by Elizabeth Parker Sherry, shows large flames and a huge plume of smoke rising over the city.

The City of East Palestine issued a shelter in place warning. An evacuation order was also issued for surrounding areas.

Why is every Don DeLillo book coming true in real life?

Add in the burning couches to that and I bet the air quality is just lovely.

Norfolk Southern train carrying 20 cars carrying Toxic Materials derailed in East Palestine, Ohio and slammed into a Diesel Storage facility owned by Leake Oil Company Inc.

10 of the 20 contained Vinyl Chloride and as of 5 hours ago the national guard used thermite devices to burn a hole into the bottom of 5 of the remaining that were still burning and then drained the Vinyl Chloride into a ditch lined with flares to purposely burn the material off

When exposed to heat in an oxygen free environment, Vinyl Chloride thermally decomposes into HCL and Phosgene in a runaway thermal reaction. They have chosen to purposely ignite ALL of the chemicals at once rather than let the thermal reaction continue to take place inside of the train cars until an inevitable and UNPLANNED explosion occurs potentially spreading the Phosgene all the way to DC

Each train car contained 177,000 lbs. of Vinyl Chloride

It's been total silence from the governor and the media for over 5 hours since the "controlled detonation"

What does Phosgene Gas exposure mean?

Initial symptoms are consistent with respiratory tract irritation, however death typically occurs in 24-48 hours as a result of fluid buildup in the lungs

During ww1 85% of all gas attack fatalities were the result of phosgene

5 railcars x estimated 200,000 lb vinyl chloride per = 1,000,000 lb vinyl chloride combusted into phosgene. The combustion products from vinyl chloride monomer gave 27,000 ppm HCl, 58,100 ppm CO2, 9500 ppm CO, 40 ppm phosgene.

That's 27,000 lb HCl and 40 lb phosgene pumped into the troposphere. I'm now more concerned with the HCl concentration and what that means for the rainstorm tomorrow.

It's Ohio. How could anyone tell?

How are the tax dollars going to pay for the cleanup and remediation of the area. Cause company will go we don’t have the funds asap

The railroad is responsible because it’s their train that hit the dirt. They’ve got more money than the federal government.

PPM depends on the volume, so your numbers mean nothing without defining the radius (cone).  Is the 27000 ppm HCl at 100 miles (lol no) or 100 yards down wind

word up I agree, that was a paste from somewhere.

Vinyl chloride is dozens of times less toxic per molecule than the U.S.-banned insecticide DDT but more dangerous per part than ammonia and natural gas, according to federal regulations that dictate acceptable levels in the air.

James Justice of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said a network of air station monitors inside and outside the evacuation zone was collecting samples and that none of their readings found anything to be concerned about. “We want to make sure that’s not going to change,” he said.

Looks like those jorts wearing goobers are safe for now

Luckily this happened in Amish country. Sparse population. Buggy sales may be down next quarter.

This is just a feint to take our attention off the Chinese balloon attack. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!!

I thought of the same user.

What?  Why?

Google: "

Is vinyl chloride in cigarettes?

Cigarette smoke contains 5.6 to 27 nanograms of vinyl chloride per cigarette. This amount is not immediately harmful, but over time it can cause serious damage to the liver."

Hey man, at least those rail companies got those damn rail workers in line and got their profits up to new heights!

Absolutely incredible that there's been so little attention on this issue - and that the EPA had to be the ones to actually fucking check for more poison in that community. God bless America, we sure fuckin need it.

Edit: just looked and of COURSE a rule was rolled back 4 years ago that removed more safety requirements and regulations for trains carrying oil and petrochemical products, at the behest of rail companies that wanted fatter margins

What rule are you talking about?

In particular in 2019, they lowered the crew requirements for a train from two people to one person. It worsened the risk from prior rule rollbacks in 2017 that weakened and in some cases removed hazardous cargo transportation rules and improvements to braking systems. I don't have a link for it handy, but rails have also been running more and more capacity on their lines, so there's less wiggle room in scheduling, but that's just companies seeking the maximum profit above safety and risk considerations.

The end result is one single person managing and solely maintaining a 3 mile long train carrying highly explosive materials at high speed near a residential area. Theres video footage and eyewitness accounts of the trains wheels glowing hot and trailing sparks for TWENTY MILES before it derailed - a clear maintenance and operational issue that was going undetected by the SOLE TRAIN OPERATOR.

It's absolutely disgusting when you remember that Norfolk Rail also had record profits AND bought back $10,000,000,000 in shares this year.

Oh yeah, and the local cops are arresting reporters who are asking questions they don't like at press conferences. Granted, authorities have already said "whoopsie poopsie!" and are trying to undo that, but I get the feeling that's why there's not as much coverage on this titanic public environmental disaster in the pursuit of more private profit

You can ignore the fossil fuels rant. But you should be appalled at the below, which is touched on above. You can do your research on who in Congress and President fought against these safety measures. All in the name of profits.

"Train derailments are not uncommon. More than 250 trains have derailed in the last decade, according to the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, a branch of the federal Department of Transportation. Of them, roughly half involved hazardous waste. Trains that carry hazardous waste face additional federal regulations, but the Norfolk Southern train that derailed in East Palestine was not considered a “high-hazard flammable train,” federal officials told The Lever, an investigative news outlet. Despite the combustibility of vinyl chloride, industry lobbyists have successfully limited many trains carrying the chemical from the most stringent federal regulations.

The industry group American Association of Railroads, of which Norfolk Southern is a member, has also fought stricter safety standards including an updated braking system. Electronically Controlled Pneumatic brakes, or ECP brakes, can decrease train stopping distances and could have prevented the derailment last week, according to The Lever. Norfolk spent years lobbying against the use of these brakes, and the Ohio train was not outfitted with the technology.

Well yeah, it’s fluid (response to Ballgame)

Not to downplay the seriousness of this because it's really bad, but Stew Peters is a lying propagandist and it's not remotely surprising that Zeus is promoting his bullshit.

Holy damn that's scary shit. Granted it'll flash off pretty quickly and it's a well-ventilated area not near a water table. But I'd bet whoever filmed that has some respiratory irritation for the next few days, and if their car drove through the cloud they'll have some corrosion issues

How again are these thing not in containers that would survive a normal crash?  A truck or train car overturning shouldn’t cause a 2 inch thick tank to leak and insert valves at entry points shouldn’t leak.

Why are the states rights people blaming Joe Biden for the train crash in Ohio?  Shouldn't Ohio be able to take care of this?

Kramerica Industries had a bladder system that probably could have helped, had it survived the initial testing.
