February 10, 20232 yr Author this is one of those stories that i'm very familiar with, and i could see this movie bugging me by taking too much creative license against what really happened, but still- i want to see this movie. that's not something i say very often. i'm in.
February 10, 20232 yr Lot of star power in that cast. Hope it lives up to the preview. Definitely want to see it.
February 10, 20232 yr Saw the clip and googled who plays Jordan…. Evidently no one? I know it’s focused on Nike but seems like someone should be playing Jordan in this story.

Then again, I'm surprised it's not Kevin Hart.

February 10, 20232 yr Looks okay. I'll probably check it out when it hits streaming. I liked the Sandler movie about scouting the Euro kid.
February 10, 20232 yr Popular Post "I need the greatest basketball shoe that's ever been made." I see the writers strike has already happened.
February 10, 20232 yr The real question is who plays the Chinese slave laborers.......or did Nike and the CCP allow them to shoot on site? Ooops, poor wording. The CCP always shoots on sight.

February 10, 20232 yr It would be funny if they cast someone like Tracy Morgan as 21 year old MJ and played it completely straight. "That's right, I'm Michael Jordan!".
February 10, 20232 yr I’ll wait and catch it streaming somewhere. Cast looks great but I’m just not that interested in the story of a basketball shoe.
February 10, 20232 yr on the other hand, short of levi's blue jeans (which would be make a much worse movie) I can't think of something in fashion as iconic and as impactful on pop culture at large as Nike sneakers and Jordans in particular. I doubt that the movie even really gets that deep into hip hop culture and Air Jordans but it's an interesting story worth telling.

Going back further - the Lacoste tennis/polo shirt - but that's an item rather than a specific brand. Another one off the top of my head would be Chuck Taylor's - but Nike has proven to be more lasting. Aviators/Wayfarers as far as accessories go.
February 10, 20232 yr Affleck more than won me over as a director with Gone Baby Gone, Argo and The Town. So IN for this.

I'm not a sneakerhead and don't know the history well, so I had to look up what Run DMC wore (Adidas all stars). Chucks are a really good example. I think the big "story" of fashion in the modern era is of increasing informality and the elevation of workwear and athletic wear, and parallel to that the story of streetwear and how that reflected/drove shifts and attitudes about race in American culture. If you were to focus that on one brand I think it would have to be Nike. Or maybe just the sneaker would be a good focus to be able to tell that story. Surely someone has made that documentary already.
February 10, 20232 yr Men going stupid over basketball shoes is high up the list of dumbest things about this century so far.

February 11, 20232 yr Wasn’t Sonny Vaccaro kind of a piece of shit? Maybe I am remembering wrong. Not sure he needs a Rudy-ification.
February 11, 20232 yr Another one off the top of my head would be Chuck Taylor's - but Nike has proven to be more lasting. Dunno. I’d bet Chucks outnumber Nikes 3-1 among teens. They outnumber Jordans probably 100-1. My two kids probably have 8 pairs of Chucks between them and zero Nikes. Granted these are white kids with zero street cred.

February 13, 20232 yr That Super Bowls trailer looked terrible. Looked like a Matt Damon and Affleck episode of SNL. Complete parody and farce. I can't believe they made that with a serious tone.

A fucking 2 hour commercial for Nike? No fucking thank you.

February 14, 20232 yr Had a pair of these in 1979 and they were trashed in 2 months. Bought these in 1980 and the soles wore out in a few months. These were always my main shoes from 1978 thru 1984.

Never saw much need for it in basketball as I never saw anyone with torn up toes from shooting hoops, even outside. Tennis, on the other hand, would have seemed to benefit from it, but never saw anything like it on a tennis shoe.

It would be like today if all of a sudden New Balance signed the biggest basketball star coming out of college and made a shoe for him.

I always get a chuckle out of people poking fun at the Jordan brand football schools. Like Nike and Adidas were made for football.
