No worries dumbo will turn the entire Oline into 1st round picks :).

247 VIP practice notes: Running back Jonathon Brooks returns to practice following off-season surgery

Good news in here from FCB re: Brooks, Maalik Murphey, and Isaiah Neyor

Spoiler

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas sophomore running back Jonathon Brooks was practicing with the team Tuesday - and getting first-team reps - after recovering from post-season hernia surgery and missing the first week of spring football.

Despite missing the first three practices of spring football, Brooks was getting the first-team reps on Tuesday, followed by Jaydon Blue, Cedric Baxter Jr., Ky Woods, Savion Red and Anton Simieou. Running back Keilan Robinson (muscle strain) continues to be held out of spring ball.

It was a significant day for players coming off injuries as Brooks, quarterback Maalik Murphy (foot) and receiver Isaiah Neyor (knee) were all full participants in practice. Murphy was finally able to show off his cannon for an arm, whistling a perfectly accurate out route to freshman DeAndre Moore during individual drills. Murphy was getting second-team reps behind Quinn Ewers while freshman Arch Manning was getting third-team reps.

Brooks looked quick while running drills during an individual period in which the media was allowed to observe.

There was a little rust apparent as Brooks fumbled when a football staffer punched at the ball after Brooks had darted from side-to-side, around poles set up by running backs coach Tashard Choice to help players work on making cuts in tight spaces.

But the return of Brooks is significant as the Longhorns look to replace the one starting position on offense it lost from last season, when Bijan Robinson (1,580 yards rushing, 6.1 ypc, 314 yards receiving in 2022) and Roschon Johnson (554 yards rushing, 6.0 ypc, 128 yards receiving in 2022) moved on to the NFL.

Brooks had 30 carries for 197 yards (6.6 ypc) and five touchdowns in 2022, including a season-high 11 carries for 108 yards and two TDs in a 55-14 rout of Kansas in Lawrence. In two seasons at Texas, Brooks has played in 11 games with 51 carries for 340 yards (6.7 ypc) and six touchdowns with three receptions for 49 yards and one TD through the air.

Other nuggets from Tuesday's spring practice:

Arch Manning had a beautiful deep ball down the seam to Jaden Alexis, who made a nice over-the-shoulder catch in-stride.

— Safety Jalen Catalon continues to be held out of most work while recovering/rehabbing from a shoulder injury suffered last season at Arkansas. With Catalon out, Kitan Crawford was running first-team at boundary safety with Jerrin Thompson running first-team at field safety. Larry Turner-Gooden and Michael Taffe were running second-team at safety, with BJ Allen rotating in with the twos.

— At cornerback, the competition continues to be fierce among Terrance Brooks, Wake Forest transfer Gavin Holmes, Austin Jordan, freshman Malik Muhammad and Xavion Brice for the field cornerback position vacated by departed fifth-year senior D'Shawn Jamison.

More practice notes from Jeff Howe:

Spoiler

A pleasant surprise as Texas returns to spring practice

AUSTIN, Texas — One of the most significant developments through four media viewing windows into the first four spring practices took place on Tuesday with Texas getting back to work coming off of spring break. On a cloudy, drizzly morning session inside Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, Isaiah Neyor went through drills with the wide receivers, the first time he’s done so in the roughly 20-minute windows the media has had to view practice to this point (Neyor dressed out for the team’s three practices before spring break, but Tuesday was his first as a participant that we’ve seen).

Neyor wasn’t a full participant, spending the team’s stretching period with the rehab team alongside injured offensive linemen Cole Hutson and Connor Robertson. With that said, the fact that Neyor was able to run routes on air where he had to cut and explode up the field, his recovery from a torn ACL last August that caused him to miss the entire 2022 season must be trending in the right direction.

Considering the early impact Johntay Cook and Adonai Mitchell have had early on in addition to the returns of Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington, getting Neyor back healthy could make the Longhorn receiving corps one of the best in the country. At the very least, Quinn Ewers and the other quarterbacks are on track to have no shortage of perimeter weapons at their disposal.

— With Hutson and Robertson on the mend, the offensive line mix remained the same. Based on what could be gleaned from the group going through individual work with Kyle Flood, the No. 1 group remains Kelvin Banks at left tackle, Hayden Conner at left guard, Jake Majors at center, DJ Campbell at right guard and Christian Jones at right tackle.

Cameron Williams worked at right tackle alongside Malik Agbo at right guard with Sawyer Goram-Welch at center, Neto Umeozulu at left guard and Payton Kirkland at left tackle. From left to right, the No. 3 group was Andre Cojoe, Max Merril, non-scholarship player Rick McBroom, Connor Stroh and Jaydon Chatman.

With that said, we continue to hear at the Flood is in the process of getting a look at players at different positions up front. Other than the jobs among the No. 1 group that one can safely assume are spoken for, nothing is set in stone when going down the depth chart, especially until Hutson and/or Robertson get back in the mix.

— Take it for what it’s worth, but Juan Davis was working behind walk-on Patrick Bayouth when the tight ends were going through drills with Jeff Banks. It could be something, it could be nothing, but it should reinforce the importance of Ja’Tavion Sanders to the offense as a whole. He might be the most indispensable member of the offense, including the quarterbacks.

— The one note of significance from a participation standpoint is that Jalen Catalon wasn’t out on the field. Catalan is expected to spend most of the spring rehabbing his surgically-repaired shoulder, which limited him to one game in his final season at Arkansas in 2022.

— With Catalon out, Kitan Crawford continues to get work with the first-team defense. As a result, the staff is also getting a longer look at B.J. Allen Jr. and Larry Turner-Gooden than they otherwise might have had Catalon been able to be a full participant from the jump.

— It looks like Justice Finkley has the early lead in the competition to see who will start at EDGE opposite of Barryn Sorrell. Ethan Burke, J'Mond Tapp and Colton Vasek seem to be close together when it comes to the depth behind the two Longhorns who appear to have the inside track on being with the No. 1 defense when the dust settles.

Jaylan Ford and David Gbenda continue to be the No. 1 linebacker group, but keep an eye on Liona Lefau, who appears to be already trying to make a move up the depth chart. That’s not to say Anthony Hill isn’t, for those who might be wondering about the former five-star prospect's progress, but the early returns on Lefau’s first-semester impact have been just as glowing as what’s been said about Hill.

EXCLUSIVE
Texas spring practice takeaways: Tuesday
Gerry Hamilton

Isaiah Neyor (Will Gallagher/Inside Texas)
Austin, Texas – There was another media viewing window Tuesday morning for the Texas Longhorns spring practice.

Inside Texas was on hand for the viewing session for the fourth spring practice, and brings some takeaways from the twenty minutes practice window.

Hello Isaiah Neyor
Isaiah Neyor was running routes on air Tuesday morning. The 6-foot-3, 216-pounder was wearing big brace on his knee, as expected. He had the opportunity to test the knee on a corner route in which he stuck the foot in the ground and cut. Not much you can take from two or three routes on air, other than he right where he needs to be in terms of being on pace to be fully healthy for the 2023 season.

Maalik Murphy back in action
Redshirt freshman quarterback Maalik Murphy was back on the field, and more than watching frrom behind drills. Murphy took second team reps ahead of Arch Manning in drills, which included routes on air. Murphy displayed an overhauled arm action. He is much more compact than coming out of high school. He was late on a slant route, in which Steve Sarkisian let him know about it. Sarkisian said, “Get the ball out Maalik.” That’s to be expected when you have been watching, instead of taking live reps.

We shall see where the on field performance at the position goes, but it’s safe to say Texas hasn’t three quarterbacks take consecutive reps with this level arm talent in a long time, if ever.

Quinn Ewers and Manning continue to look smooth and accurate in drills. Ewers threw precise corner routes in our viewing window.

The offensive line
Here was the position rotation during drill work.

Left tackle:
Kelvin Banks
Payton Kirkland
Andre Cojoe

Left guard:
Hayden Conner
Neto Umeozulu
Max Merril

Center:
Jake Majors
Sawyer Goram-Welch
Max Merril

Right guard:
DJ Campbell
Malik Agbo
Connor Stroh

Right tackle:|
Christian Jones
Cameron Williams
Jaydon Chatman

*We did not see Cameron Williams take a rep at guard during the viewing window.

*Offensive line coach Kyle Flood was working technique very hard in tackle-guard combo drills this morning. Hat and hand placement were expected to be on point. Not surprising, Kelvin Banks received plenty of praise. Cameron Williams can still become more consistent in that regard. The learning curve for the freshman vs. experienced players truly shows up in the combo drills.

Notes
DeAndre Moore is a smooth route runner with arms extended plucking hands. Route running on air is very impressive with Moore. There is zero waster motion getting in and out of a cut. He’s running second team behind Jordan Whittington in the slot.

Johntay Cook II continues to get the second team reps behind Xavier Worthy at field receiver. Cook is quicker than fellow freshman Moore. But Moore is as smooth as any player on the field.

Jonathon Brooks took first team running back reps. He was followed by Jaydon Blue and Cedric Baxter Jr. Baxter looks smooth in drills. Light on the feet with some pop when he sticks his foot in the ground. No different than at Edgewater High. That is a theme with the early enrollees on offense.

Savion Red is fifth team in drills, but he has as quick of feet as any back. And he again received praise from Tashard Choice in drills

I could dig a Banks - Neto - Majors - Campbell - Jones starting 5

Gerry's understating it. If Texas has ever had this level of arm talent and depth, it wasn't in my lifetime.

I'd be curious if ANY team has.

AS far as arm strength, I would think the Simms/Mock/Young trio was close at least.

Not even close. Ewers and Maalik have absolute cannons.  That said the best passing QB in modern Longhorn history was Colt and he had a sling shot for an arm. Arm strength is on of the more overrated things in football

Same with the OL stuff.  Dockery has picked up where Williams left off, he's next.  Michael Huey has been mauling people in practice, etc.  Hope sells.

My favorite ones are the physical altercation ones and said player taking on the leadership role.

They have two returning starters at OT. I view this as more of a way to get the potential best five on the field. Williams is probably a backup tackle if either Banks or Jones gets hurt.

edit: yep, as I now see others have said as well.

it's amazing.

for the two years Kyle Flood has been at Texas his best 5 have included Jake Majors at center. for 25 straight games out of 25 games that the team played. Majors actually has started the last 27 games Texas has played going back to his freshman year.

people love to wishcast that he is some shit weak link who isn't good, has never been good and will never be good. but the guy paid $1.7 million with a long history of being a very good OL coach sure thinks he is good enough.

In general I’m with you but “weak link,” “is what he is,” and “best option at the position” aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive.

He wasn’t the weakest link last year though, even if he had some rough performances.

He is mediocre at best vs the run, so I get the frustration. Flood at least wanted to push him, evidenced by the move of Angilau to center last fall camp.  I just think people underestimate the demands at center. I would rank the OL positions LT #1 (just because it is so hard ot find a true LT) and center #2, in terms of importance. I know a retiered NFL guy that says center. You cant just slap a guy in there, its not like guard. He has to be intelligent and quick on his feet. Plus there is that whole snapping and blocking thing. (on a side note, that report on Cam seems questionable according to the reporting from IT).

Who else was he going to put there his first year here? Last year until Angilau got hurt he was working at the center position. Majors isn't that good but he has experience and that goes quite a ways for that position. He can 100% be upgraded from a skill and physical standpoint.

They trotted Angilou out there before at Center and did not get the results they were hoping for.. Hand tried it, Flood tried it.. Majors is the best we have currently and the most experienced.  If you want to help him get better push in the run game.. the OGs need an upgrade/improvement

if I had a dollar for every time I read that michael huey was mauling people I'd buy all your wives and move to an island.

This Angilau writeup by an Oregon guy is worth reading. It touches on a lot of other parts of the offense (scheme, coaching).

https://www.addictedtoquack.com/2023/3/22/23649443/quacking-the-roster-ol-transfer-junior-angilau

"But I think Flood had a lot of work to do in reversing poor development done for the previous three years by his predecessor, Herb Hand – within the film reviewer community there’s a list floating around of position coaches whom we can’t believe keep getting work, and his name is at the top."

It's beyond me how Ian Boyd gets paid to write about football when there's content like this out there for free

Hometown: Rancho Cucamonga, California

Backup

Kyle McCord

Where things stand

Stroud has been the projected starter since the season concluded last year. It’s even more locked in since Ryan Day named him the starter recently. And while there has not been a backup officially named, it sure feels and looks like Kyle McCord has taken on that role, with Jack Miller close behind. The question remains — when will five-star Quinn Ewers enter the fray?
