I have heard some good things about all 4 of those guys, but I don't think any of the early whispers really matter until fall camp.

There were 28 players that enrolled at Texas after high school as part of a 2022 signing class ranked fifth nationally.

Some of those freshman had immediate impacts for the Longhorns’ 8-5 season. Others are primed for success this season as Texas competes for the final time in the Big 12 Conference. And some may have further to go in their development before finding a spot in the two-deep rotation.

Here’s part 1 of our look at how the 28 freshmen fared in 2022.

DJ Campbell, OL
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 11 overall (five-star)

Campbell played seven games last year and in six of the last eight games, including each of the last three regular season contests and the Alamo Bowl.

Kelvin Banks, OL
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 22 overall (five-star)

Banks played and started in all 13 games in 2022. He was a second-team All-Big 12 Selection by both the Big 12 Conference’s coaches and the Associated Press while also being tabbed honorable mention Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year and Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year by the league’s coaches. Banks also garnered a spot on the ESPN 2022 Preseason True Freshman All-American team.

Terrance Brooks, DB
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 56 overall (four-star)

Umeozulu saw action in three games in 2022 as was a member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll last fall.

Brenen Thompson, WR
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 101 overall (four-star)

Thompson played in nine games in 2022, catching one pass for 32 yards against Oklahoma State. He was a member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (fall 2022). Thompson transferred to Oklahoma in the Spring of 2023.

B.J. Allen Jr., DB

Allen did not see any game action last year.

Justice Finkley, EDGE

J’mond Tapp, EDGE
2022 On3 Industry Ranking: No. 130 overall (four-star)

Tapp played in two games last year and recorded statistics in both. He had a tackle in the season opener against the Louisiana-Monroe and added a quarterback hurry against UTSA. Tapp was a member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (fall 2022).

He finished the season with 19 tackles (eight solo), half a sack, four quarterback hurries and two pass breakups despite missing the final five games with a knee injury. The early enrollee is a two-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll (spring 2022, fall 2022).

The Milton hype because of how far he can throw the ball is hilarious.

I used to be a hopeful, positive poster, but Tom Herman and now Chris Beard have put me in a very dark place.

Herman at-least kicked the shit out of Georgia. Bevo set the tone and the team followed.

Very true and a great memory. That was the problem with Herman. As a writer for the NY Times once wrote in reference to the Jets, "Bad teams always provide false hope."

Surprised that C Jones isn't going, but it's hard to argue with that lineup.
