September 26Sep 26 while every other comedian in america is heading over to saudi arabia, including bill burr (😢), everyone’s favorite hateful right wing comedian has refused for moral reasons. now cue the line of posters who are chomping at the bit to angrily respond about how i just wont stop, checks notes, posting about the subject of this thread, and how awful that is.

The dude moved to Austin for the comedy scene, and now spends his time shitting on Austin and the comedy scene. He joined the Rogan circle and now is trying to worm his way out of it. He makes fun of Trump but thinks Trump is hilarious. He doesn't want to lose his Trump supporter frat bros or the "liberals" who aren't hyper aware of the comedy/podcast scene and just see his TV appearances. I bet you were a real hoot at that one party you got invited to. Good lord lighten the fuck up

September 26Sep 26 I have to admit SNL really missed out by dropping this guy because he is perfect for them. I don't know any comedian right now that can take a 10 second joke and stretch it out to 10 minutes than this guy can.

September 27Sep 27 Pete Davidson performing at this after his dad died on 9/11 is pretty fucking amazing. You’re already rich, man. Wow.
September 29Sep 29 Yeah, Bill Burr can step right off his high horse after this one. You did it for the money Billy Ball Bag. Kevin Hart will be in literally any movie for money. I thought Chappelle was more about his art than his money, but he walked away from like $50 million in 2007 money. The compound interest on that alone is going to have him chasing bags. Davidson is pretty inexplicable, but he probably got the biggest payday and he’s kind of a sick fuck about his dad’s death. So I’m sure he thinks he has a banger of a joke for the festival. Regardless of politics, I think we can all agree that nobody wants to go to Saudi Arabia for vacation. Their attempts at normalizing themselves for tourists is strange and painfully insincere.
September 29Sep 29 Chappelle hasn't been funny for 10 years. And I kinda lost my admiration for him after he mocked Michael Jackson's child rape victims in his special and basically called them liars. He's got more stupid in him than I ever realized. I still watched his specials but they sucked balls.
September 29Sep 29 I sorta feel different about the Saudi thing. US was big on exporting its culture through Hollywood for the last 100 years. I think its good for us as a country to do this.

If they are allowed to come in and punch up, maybe it's a bit of that ping pong diplomacy mentioned above. If it's a state-washing put-on to legitimaize KSA in the eyes of the world, no thank you.

I think Chappelle has been on a generational run the last 10 years-- more as a story telling thought leader and public intellectual who happens to be very funny than a traditional comedian, though. 12 hours ago, billfromlaketravis said: Regardless of politics, I think we can all agree that nobody wants to go to Saudi Arabia for vacation. Not sure that I agree with this-- lots of Middle East locales have become very Western friendly and fun vacation spots. I've personally been to Muscat and Dubai multiple times and it largely feels no different than a (different kind of brown) browner Miami vacation. As the millennials gain more and more influence around the culture, KSA seems to be rotating more to the pro-Western comforts that one would think of when thinking of tourist destinations and as crude is careening towards $50, it's validating the thinking of those oil states as to why they are heavy tech and tourism investors of the last 10-15 years. September 29Sep 29 I feel like there is a huge potential audience for Shane to start churning out passable 82 minute lowbrow comedy movies. Cast him with Glen Powell in something wait for Netflix to back up the Brinks truck
September 29Sep 29 I think Tim Dillon was supposed to do the Saudi Arabia thing but they backed out of it after one of his podcast episodes. Probably a better outcome than them arresting and detaining him 12 minutes into a set.

I’m sure we have comedy writers on this site that can whip up a decent script and if not, AI is plenty advanced.

October 1Oct 1 i hope someone has some crisis of conscience over this and ends up doing something interesting with it. maybe spoof the censorship rules by doing a whole set like Norm's roast of Bob Saget being ultra G rated puns and other weak stuff. or maybe make fun of Saudi government by pretending it is someone else they are talking about: "don't you hate it when they dismember journalists in . . . uh . . . england?"

I saw him live in Dallas as part of the Oddball festival a while back and yeah, at that time, he sounded bitter, borderline depressed, and his punchlines were really subdued and just not very funy. It was really disapointing. His more recent Netflix stuff has been pretty good, although I still think he really misplayed the trans joke controversy, but not gonna rehash that here, I know I posted plenty on the other thread during that timeperiod.
