Anyone want to guess how many "Balk-offs" have been recorded since 1914?  The answer may surprise you...

Fun facts:  link

Spoiler

Notable balks[edit]

During the 1947 World Series (New York Yankees vs. Brooklyn Dodgers) Spec Shea dropped the ball trying to pick off Jackie Robinson at first base; after at least one other attempt, he dropped the ball and umpire Babe Pinelli waved Robinson to second base.[18]

A famous balk came in the first All-Star Game of 1961, when strong winds at Candlestick Park caused pitcher Stu Miller to sway erratically and be called for a balk. This story is often exaggerated in re-tellings of baseball lore, some having Miller being blown off the pitching mound.[19]

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Texas Rangers on June 18, 2015, when Rangers relief pitcher Keone Kela committed a balk in the bottom of the ninth inning of a tie game with Dodger Enrique Hernández at third base.[20] There have been at least 23 such walk-off balks (or "balk-offs") in major league history since 1914.[21]

On June 14, 2019, Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen intentionally balked during a game with the Chicago Cubs. With the Dodgers leading, 5–3, and two outs in the top of the ninth inning, the Cubs' Jason Heyward was on second base. Concerned that a runner at second base could possibly steal signs, Jansen intentionally balked, advancing the runner to third base.[22] Jansen then struck out batter Víctor Caratini for the final out of the game.[23] Other intentional balks, while rare, have subsequently occurred in MLB.

Another fun fact: The Mets are still currently paying 2 different players deferred contracts over 25 years. One ends in 2035, the other ends in 2028.

The Orioles are also paying Bonilla 500k a year through 2028!

Forgot how insanely common no-nos are. They have 12 not counting the bullshit ones. Some poor bastard named Ken Johnson threw the only ever 9 inning CG no-hitter loss for them in 1964.

Wow, Astros finally got a real no hitter courtesy of Framber Valdez. I believe it’s the first one in their history.

Fun fact. The Astros have thrown more no hitters (16) than the Yankees (13) despite being in the MLB half as many years.

*12 for the Astros. If you want to count the combined ones we should start counting games where a team’s lineup combined to hit for a single double triple and homer as hitting for the cycle. Same exact logic.

Lots of writers had the Angels as winners of the trade deadline.  Meanwhile Giolito has given up 8 9 runs with 2 outs in the 4th.

And finally yanked.  I'm sure Shohei is impressed and ready to sign on the dotted line.

Quite the season for this cat.

Quote

“Domingo Germán has agreed today to voluntarily submit to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse,” the Yankees said in a press release today. “He will be placed on the restricted list for the time that he is away from the club. It is critical that Domingo completely focuses on addressing his health and well-being. We will respect his privacy as he begins this process.”

Just saw he’s out for the year. And they’re in last place.

Jesus. Yankee fan is at rock bottom. Helobious is still posting so we know he’s still alive.

So was taking a look at everyones favorite player Zack Greinke

He is having a horrendous year.  What is sad is he is closing in on 3000K, but he may not even make it.

He is 1-11 with a 5.32 ERA.

49 K's away from 3000, but he is only getting like 3 or 4 Ks a game on a good day (which isn't many)

The unps have a damn strong Union ….

In Umpire Angel Hernandez's first game behind the plate since an April injury, he struggled to find the bottom of the zone. The Nationals announcers were VERY vocal about what they thought of Angel.Especially after a missed ball led to a hitter's count and a HR.

I would advocate a high heater that the catcher thought was going to be another low ball ...

I'm no Hernandez fan, but a lot of those were very much borderline pitches.  You chirp about those borderline pitches, and an ump like Hernandez brings the zone up even higher.

Gil must have passed out when Shohei got pulled after 4.

Cade Marlowe just rained all over Shohei's paradeHis second career home run is a go-ahead grand slam in the ninth!

Also, it shouldn't matter and Hernández is an atrocious umpire, but why is the catcher yanking strikes at the top of the knees all the way up to the batter's waist? If I'm an ump and you're catching and you yank a pitch 18 inches after catching it I wonder if I was wrong and it was actually low.

30 years ago today, Robin Ventura f#cked around.  29 years, 23 hours, 59 minutes and 55 seconds ago, Robin Ventura found out.

Ventura remains the only player in MLB history to get seven hits off Ryan in one inning.

Meh. Those color guy is getting his blood pressure up over borderline pitches.

They weren't clear strikes. You'd then they were listening to the broadcast.

I maybe the only person that felt a little sorry for Ventura. You can tell he really didn't want to do anything, but with old school baseball he couldn't go back to his own dugout without charging. So he jogged out there probably hoping things would get broken up quickly. Ended up on the wrong end of one of the most iconic moments in baseball and Texas state history.

Nolan was strong af and not for the games.
