Basically, Scipio thought Ewers showed improvement from last year. He specifically mentioned Ewers seeing the field better. He thought Murphy looked good, but thought people should pump the brakes over him hitting passes against walk ons in a controlled situation. He said we should be encouraged that it looks like we can win games with Murphy if something happens to Ewers.

(Scipio Tex) 2023 Texas Spring Game Postmortem: Offense

Quote

I only got in my initial viewing, but I’m excited to write about football and I hope you’ll indulge me. My primary takeaway on both sides of the ball for is improved depth and more diverse playmaking options that will only improve with more practice reps and game experience.

That’s good news given the context of an offense missing multiple interior offensive linemen from the two deep (Cole Hutson, DJ Campbell, Connor Robertson), two running backs (Jonathon Brooks, Keilan Robinson) who will garner the lion’s share of early season opportunity, Isaiah Neyor (a significant unknown) and a few Fall enrollee freshmen that will help round out wide receiver and tight end depth. Let’s jump into it…

Quarterback

I was struck by Quinn Ewers’ improved ability to see and utilize the whole field in a variety of passing game concepts. He was extremely limited last year in what he could confidently execute and he has grown along with the options around him. He finished 16 of 23 for 195 yards with a touchdown. Ewers started slow on a off-rhythm first drive, throwing one ball hurriedly and unnecessarily off platform, but he settled in and made a nice variety of tosses, using the middle of the field in ways he hadn’t shown himself capable of last year.

He threw a good catchable ball to Worthy on a 46 yard deep fade, but my favorite throws were his routine 8-15 yard slants, RPOs and Mesh concepts that provide the base of any functioning college passing game. His naughtiest moment was trying to force a ball over the middle of the field late on a 3rd and 14, but that’s teachable. He looked composed and ready to run the base infrastructure passing offense and his play speed will pick up with more reps. I don’t like when he throws from his hip, but that’s probably because I can’t.

Perhaps fueled by the attention on the other athletes in the QB room, Maalik Murphy demonstrated what Sark saw in the California project. That performance means that he has the inside track going into the summer as the #2 QB. That’s terrific news. He’s a massive, strong athlete with velocity that helps make up for his inexperience in recognition. I think he was most comfortable in set piece offense where he knows his progressions and can cut the field in half. He dropped consecutive deep dimes attacking #39, walk-on cornerback Ja’Faar Johnson, one of them dropped by DeAndre Moore, the other housed by Johntay Cook for a 79 yard touchdown. That helped pad the stat line to an impressive 9 of 13 for 165 yards, but he also had some receiver drops and I liked him on his mundane throws. We can win games with Murphy at QB and he can still make a big leap with a healthy offseason.

I knew this was coming…

Arch had spotty protection and his receivers were blanketed downfield. Evaluating him beyond his self-evident traits has little value and not turning it over was his victory. Here are his snaps:

If you only want to talk about our 3rd string early enrollee freshman QB after we just saw our entire offense, you’re a hopeless media pawn and I’m probably going to yell at you.

Running Back

With Brooks and Robinson sidelined, Texas got in almost exactly equal amounts of work for Savion Red, Cedric Baxter and Jaydon Blue. Blue vs. Red was a close contest, but surprisingly Blue impressed me the most as he demonstrated a renewed willingness to run inside and a little physicality to go with his burst. Perhaps Tashard Choice let him know that if he bounced a run unnecessarily, he could bounce over to the bench. I liked him as a runner. As a receiver? His business decision pull-up on a bad Worthy end around throw was not an awesome display of competitive instinct, but I’ll put more weight on his lugging the loaf.

Cedric Baxter certainly looks the part and he’ll play his best ball 15-20 pounds heavier than he is now. I liked his willingness to eat it and not turn a bad play into a disaster when the holes weren’t apparent. Savion Red showed nice burst in the second half and there’s more meat left on the developmental bone at his new position, but his pass protection was abysmal.

Shout out to walk-on Ky Woods. His 35 yard catch and 21 yards rushing revealed legitimate burst. Probably not our goal line back, but a nice asset to have keeping the Horn defense sharp in practice. Jonathon Brooks didn’t play as a precautionary measure. Aside from being a talented runner, Brooks is the only running back on the roster that the coaches can call any play or protection they want when he’s in the game. That alone makes him RB1.

Wide Receiver/Tight End

Alternate title: Xavier Worthy properly tracks deep ball.

In our recent podcast, Gerry Hamilton remarked that he wanted to see our wide receivers make some plays for the QB, which we sorely missed last year. Astute comment. We saw some of that on Saturday, whether Xavier Worthy tracking a deep touch fade, AD Mitchell one-handing a touchdown snag, Jordan Whittington creating yards after the catch between the hashes, or young Johntay Cook running routes with uncommon polish and awareness for a freshman.

Texas has layers of receiving options and the wide distribution of the ball in the Spring Game likely portends what 2023’s offense will look like. Freshman DeAndre Moore had a hard start to the game, dropping a couple of easy balls, including an easy touchdown dime from Murphy, and he ate a big lick from Ryan Watts, but he kept plugging along and ended up catching 6 balls. Good resilience from the freshman.

AD Mitchell is exactly what I anticipated. Body control, catch radius and good feet will get you a lot of catches and red zone work. All three top guys showed facility in the intermediate game (Worthy on clean RPOs running inside isn’t coverable, AD Mitchell’s stop routes same) and that really helps to create space and a lot of damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don’t scenarios in a Big 12 where the coverages will often concede “executional throws” for fear of giving up a deep ball.

JT Sanders was a non-factor in the passing game as Texas tried to feed him early and then opted to give the wide outs a workout. Gunnar Helm had a few solid blocks and caught a ball. Worth noting that big senior walk-on #48 Patrick Bayouth (6-4, 278) got some snaps in two tight end and jumbo sets and did OK with his opportunities. Could just be a function of the roster splits or something to monitor.

Offensive Line

The freshmen had a baptism by fire at times, but given the missing pieces in the depth chart and a game plan that didn’t want to show too much in either the running or passing game, I thought the starting unit was fine. I didn’t see any matador style busts inside and penetration was limited against the 1s. Truthfully, most of their evaluation is match-up based and how the individual offensive lineman played was predicated on who was lined up across from them.

I see a path for a good unit, particularly as key pieces get healthy but it may take a minute for it to all cohere and click, particularly if they choose to chase some upside lineups that could include Cam Williams at guard. Big offseason for several guys in the weight room and on the chalk board.

Jaydon Blue gets praise for his burst on the 31 yard touchdown, but Christian Jones really has a nice block adjusting to eliminate a stunting linebacker and uses his body to cave in any backside pursuit. The coup de grace is Sanders walling off Ethan Burke, who turns his shoulders to the sideline and doesn’t squeeze the puller on the counter action. Jerrin Thompson’s bad steps behind it all are partly on him and partly on Burke’s lack of commitment.

Final

Depth is floor and Texas has it. Development of depth is ceiling. The Horns need to raise the ceiling over the next four and a half months and see what happens.

Everyone needs to calm down about Murphy, he threw some nice passes and cooked a walk-on.  It's one glorified scrimmage.

So many people seem to be glossing over this. I'm sure people know that we're running vanilla, but they still seem to leave it out of their evaluations. We aren't showing anything new schematically and we aren't fully utilizing our best players. Plenty of guys who have their spots locked were making business decisions (side note - I was impressed with Worthy's effort, he got pretty chippy and I loved it). The defense also has the significant advantage of knowing these players and the playbook that other defenses won't have.

I generally agree, but the fact that reasonable people weren't expecting Arch to be great does not preclude this board freaking out about nothing. Surly could be getting a blowjob from Eva Green and still complain that her execution and effort weren't meeting expectations.

I’ll admit Eva Green is a somewhat odd choice for the poster to use as “the woman in the world I’d most like to fuck,” but she’s got giant tits and anyone of us would probably be lucky to get the time of day from her.

Probably because Center is the position that takes the longest to learn behind QB, so it would be hard to get a transfer ready to call out all the protections and assignments and Center is a position that’s in short supply in college, so there’s not many, if any, above average centers in the portal. The staff has actively tried to have guys switch to Center every offseason to give Majors competition. It’s pretty clear they’re not in love with him, but that doesn’t mean there’s a better option available.

It has been strange. There was talk they liked Robertson and he was the actual back up. That said, I am surprised they didn’t throw some numbers at the position. Have some of these highly rated interior guys make a run at the position (Neto, Campbell, etc).

edit: I guess you could say that despite Majors issues, guard was a bigger issue last year

FWIW... My overall view of the spring sorta-kinda like a real game.

First, we've gotten a whole lot closer to actual 2-deep all the way around, which is a Good Thing.

Second, we apparently have fully embraced the Pulaski game strategy. No punting, no kicking. We'll eschew XP and FG kicks, and we'll onside every KO.

My true concerns, as they were last year, are reserved for the Coaches, and particularly for the HC/OC and his inability to understand that you cannot abandon any of your games and keep a running a losing game plan as-is, under the apparent belief that doing so will prepare you to win next year or the next.

I saw a lot to be excited about and potential in quite a few areas yesterday. I was very impressed by Maalik and Ewers looked efficient.

It’s exciting the stable of QBs we have and Arch will have the luxury of learning and being able to sit (hopefully.) I don’t know where a lot of the frustration is coming from I guess.

Sure Ewers came in with plenty of hype and he did show flashes last year (he was also injured) but given how his career started—leaving his senior year of HS when even Ohio State thought it was a bad idea for him to do so will always be a knock against him if he doesn’t measure up to the hype.

His footwork still is off but as people said he is seeing the field better and is making overall progress from where he was last year. But it’s hard not to be excited about Maalik. He has that something and he’s exciting to watch and I’m not going to feel bad about being excited about him. He was injured all last year and I gotta say if he had come out and played just meh or on Arch’s level it would be understandable…but he came out and shined in his possessions and took full advantage of his time on the field.

This is not for me a knock on Ewers but watching Maalik play was the most excited I have been watching our QBs since Colt and I don’t care if he was throwing to crash dummies or people in the stands—as Sark said the sky is the limit for him and it’s cool to see we haven’t even scratched the surface of what either Maalik or Ewers can be. I just saw something special in Maalik yesterday that I haven’t seen in a long time…got the chills listening to Colt yesterday  talk about how talented Maalik was and how he was bigger than VY. There is a lot of things to be excited about.

My biggest worry is still sark and playcalling and until he can prove me wrong (Bijan and RoJo were not utilized as well as they could have been last year and that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it.) I’m excited but I have learned over the last decade to tap the brakes on my enthusiasm. But that’s hard because I’m such a passionate fan. But damn Maalik has that something. Im glad we all got to see it yesterday. Whatever happens I am glad we finally got to see that kid play. 🤘🏼

I don’t particularly want anyone off the aggy line, thanks.

It's not like Maalik was some scrub in HS.  The dude was runner-up in the Elite 11 that year beating QE who finished 6th.  Yet, Maalik is always described as a "project", as if Quinn isn't?

Dude went 9-13 with 3 obvious drops and a 4th to Gunner in the endzone that I think should have been caught.  My favorite throw was at about 6:40 mark.   and let me know if you think Quinn completes that.

There is just something different about him, and the team seemed more energized with him on the field.  Just my opinion.

I don’t think it’s controversial to say Maalik had a better spring game. I think most are trying to get people to temper their expectations based on a small sample size. I haven’t been Texas fans this excited since Casey Thompson’s bowl magic and that was an actual real game. Throw at 6:40 is a sack in a real game, which directly relates to the prior sentence

I see internet fans are still unable to tell what they're looking at and only see the result of a play. He is obviously very talented and coming along very nicely but he also obviously has a long way to go.

It's fine to say Maalik looked better than QE yesterday. My issue is this odd rush to pencil in Maalik as the starter when he's never taken a competitive snap in non-Spring ball. He should absolutely be given a chance to win the job. Will he win the job, I highly doubt it. There is something different about him but it was one Spring Game. Everyone needs to calm the f down and let things play out.

This is behind his receiver?  Moore is leaning forward and reaching out in front to try to catch the ball.  Could it have been an extra foot in front?  Sure.  But when Ewers was literally throwing behind the receiver on crosses last year, people were blaming the receiver for not adjusting to the throw.

Both Maalik and Arch were playing against the 2nd and 3rd defense. Maalik's long throws were against a walk-on corner in single coverage. That is not disparaging, he played the hand he was dealt and took advantage. Those were beautiful throws. You can't truly get a sense of where he is until he is running against the first defense. Quinn played well, and only had one truly bad throw against first team guys. The context is important, which is why Sark went out of his way to say Quinn was the starter in his post game presser.

Edited by Vertigo

Most of the posters (myself included) have no sway over any football related decisions so who gives a fuck if people are excited about Maalik? I mean we haven’t won anything worth a shit in like 13 years…so I’m surprised we aren’t all completely burnt out. This “everyone tap the brakes shit” reminds me of the incessant “mansplaining” about QE to the board.

”well he was playing with the first string man! Ok! He had one hand tied behind his back and was wearing a blindfold and they dumped a truckload of sand on him when he was in the pocket…Sark was just throwing vanilla shit at him…look those other two guys didn’t have to throw in those conditions.”

I thought QE played well yesterday. Making better reads and was efficient. I hope we all see the hype on the field come game time. I really do. I want to see why it was QE had so much hype around him. I’ve see a few flashes but nothing that just makes me go…damn! Or at least not much so far. But he is working with one of the best as far as QB development and I bet we will see all that progress this fall. That is something to be excited about. I want to see why he was considered so elite and special. Most QBs can throw a bomb at this point…can we be accurate or the intermediate and short throws? Our WR situation this year will certainly help out QE more than it did last year. That is what it looked like to me. He has more weapons and one year in the Sark system so he can only grow and get better from there. I hope!

We haven’t seen either Malik’s or QE’s ceiling yet. It should be an interesting summer and football season. Like most people have said a competition can only make everyone better. I support whoever the starter is and right now it’s QE and it likely won’t change. He’s making progress. That is a good thing.

I don't have an issue with people saying Malik threw better than Quinn yesterday, Malik was more efficient with his throws.  My problem is people saying stupid shit like "the team seemed more energized with him on the field" or "Murphy just has IT."  That's dumb and has no objective basis.  Murphy seems to have "IT" and made the team "seem more energized" to you because he did something you liked.  Did Deandre Moore seem "energized" when he dropped that deep pass or did Helm seem "energized" when he dropped the touchdown?

Also, that throw at 6:40 is about a 5 yard out route to the boundary.  Hmm...

Yeah, Quinn can make that throw.

I don’t think that Helm throw in the endzone was a drop. I believe that was Lefau making a very nice play. TE had him boxed out. Ball was a bit high, giving Lefau the chance to go over Helm and get the break up. Really nice play by a freshman LB
