Texas Declared Independence on March 2, but Sam Houston won Independence on April 21.

Hope that siesta was good, Santa Anna.

From Traces of Texas:

"We view ourselves on the eve of battle. We are nerved for the contest, and must conquer or perish. It is vain to look for present aid: none is at hand. We must now act or abandon all hope! Rally to the standard, and be no longer the scoff of mercenary tongues! Be men, be free men, that your children may bless their father's name."

----- Sam Houston's speech to his troops before the Battle of San Jacinto, which happened 187 years ago today

Thick cloud, steam rising
Hissing stone on sweat lodge fire
Around me, buffalo roam
Sage in bundle, rub on skin
Outside, cold air
Stand, wait for rising sun
Red paint, eagle feathers
Coyote calling, it has begun….

Wait, what???

I’m beginning to think we might have a better state government now if Sam had lost that one

I bet there wouldn't be a lot of us trying to jump the river into Durant.

Remember the Alamo!  Remember Goliad!

There was likely way more "Me no Alamo" said on that day!

Here's to Texas!

At UT there was a Spanish grad student (of Michigan provenance) who went on an admittedly glorious rant of asking why San Jacinto Blvd was pronounced "San Juh-sin-tow" and not "San Ha-seen-to."

I told her it's because Santa Anna took a nap.

I really did not fit in in grad school.
