Thought this one was an obvious stand out

The video of First Aid Kit singing that live to EmmyLou kicks ass.

EDIT:  dumb of me not to link it:

Thank you for posting this because I had not heard of First Aid Kit.  That's a beautiful song.

WHILE WE ALL HAVE LOTS OF BANDS WHO INFLUENCE STILL

WE ALL RIP OFF MESHUGGA

About Ronnie Van Zant and Neil Young

More DBT/Jason Isbell about The Band's Rick Danko and Richard Manuel

More songs about members of the Band - Elton John about Levon Helm

More Jason Isbell about Justin Townes Earle

Edit: Levon isn't actually about Levon Helm. Bernie Taupin just liked the name and wrote the lyrics to the song about a guy named Levon. Still, I think it counts.

Fuck, forgot about another Drive By Truckers song. They wrote a shit ton of songs about other musicians. And not just a passing reference. Like a whole goddamn song:

This counts, I think

Out on tour with The Smashing Pumpkins
Nature kids, I, they don't have no function
I don't understand what they mean
And I could really give a fuck
The Stone Temple Pilots, they're elegant bachelors
They're foxy to me, are they foxy to you?
I will agree they deserve absolutely nothing
Nothing more than me

Ernest Tubb but also mentions Hank Sr., Bob Wills

Hank Williams but also mentions Beethoven, Charlie Parker (Bird), and Chuck Berry

Neil's response to Skynyrd:

Lest anyone think rappers invented diss tracks, Johnny Thunders lets the Sex Pistols know what he thinks of them after the Pistols released "New York."

Not by name but by song.  Peter Murphy -> Petula Clark

Subway is an homage to "Don't Sleep in the Subway" and also makes a reference to "I Know a Place" ("there;s a place where we can meet...")

Scrolled back through this thread and am a little surprised that this song has yet to be mentioned.  Then again, I don't think it was one of Joe Diffie's biggest hits.

And might as well post this while on the subject of 90s country.

Don't think this one has been posted yet.  Heard this the other day on Outlaw Country.  I confess to not being familiar with Kimmie Rhodes.  After hearing this I will make an effort to become more familiar with her work.

Austin stalwart.  Decades of work with Willie, Emmylou, etc.  The list of artists who have recorded her songs is stunning.

Cross-posting from the hip-hop thread. Kendrick’s response to Drake finally came out yesterday

2 Nick Lowe songs come to mind. Rollers Show, about going to see the Bay City Rollers, and All Men Are Liars, which disses Rick Astley. (he had a big fat hit, it was ghastly...)

A few metal examples, though there are probably thousands.

Anthrax paying tribute to Ronnie James Dio and Dimebag:

Zakk Wylde's tribute to Dimebag:

Pantera referencing Sabbath and Slayer:

Dee Snider referencing pretty much everyone, since every lyric in the chorus is a different metal title:

Public Enemy shouting out Anthrax and a bunch of other musicians
