Are you sure they have money to throw around.  They spent a lot of money on a DL coach.

He's 6'4, 305, and graded well at AZ. He's not a replacement for Sweat. He's a rotational piece. If he's a Nansen Loyalist he was probably cheap in terms of NIL too. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth brother.

Lol wut. He graded out higher than any of our returning DL besides Collins, and he’s good against the run. How is this not a good take?

I think they see a kid who is ready to step in and play heavy minutes if needed but otherwise is going to be a good rotational DT.

FWIW - Here is PFF Run Defense Grades for the Arizona and Texas DL:

Not looking at anything, we just heard from Sark himself that the first thing he prioritizes from portal players is 1) culture fit and 2) productivity at he college level. Tiaoalii seems like a culture fit from everything we know, but #2 doesn't seem there. He could blow up though which is what I'm hoping.

He and Kendrick Blackshire are here to be good culture guys, eat some good situational/rotational snaps, and fill holes in the roster.

Rare miss by Sark getting this Savea guy. He had 18% of his season total of tackles last year in the first game of the season. Did absolutely nothing the last 11 games of the year. Not saying he’s a bad player but we need pass rushers, and that’s not what he is.

He is more prepared to contribute than an incoming true freshman we just released from his NLI. It is a win and you should accept that.

Any chance of flipping Jamaree Caldwell?  IIRC he's the UH DT that is in the portal and committed to the Ducks.

You're trying to use tackles as a measure of effectiveness for a DT.

Outland Trophy confirmed. Possible Heisman.

I believe he lined up at DE mostly last year though, and was seemingly ineffective. Maybe DT suits him better and that’s Sark’s thinking I guess

he was listed as a DT at Arizona. he was listed as a DT at UCLA on their depth chart.

I googled him and had seen some photos of him lining up at what looked like end. Admittedly not the most scientific approach I guess.

So... if he goes, who is a legit target to bolt and more interesting does it cause more of a cascade in the ranks of coaches and more rosters that could be available for poaching?

I am finding the angst being ginned up on this board around the DT spot to be both nauseating and perplexing. It's a mix of handwringers who just need something to worry over and a bizarre cadre of imbeciles who seem to be intent on bemoaning the position simply because there are equally talented replacements just sitting there and ready to go behind Sweat and Murphy. "If we don't see an upward trajectory at every vacated spot on the roster, every cycle, then something is wrong."

I assume some of this is driven by the lack of a DL coach, but that isn't all of it. We've already seen elements to the position addressed by Collins coming back, Savea being added, and several of us, who would actually fucking know, saying that there is NIL slotted for spring time DL portal help. Yet the pussyrubbing continues.

You’re looking at counting stats as a way to measure quality of DT play, which is your main problem. People who actually have watched him play know he’s solid, and we have a clear need at the position. This is a good, not great, take. Stop trying to overthink it.

Nah. Savea is a good player. Blackshire is just a culture add. Savea will be first or second string and getting a lot of reps all year. Blackshire will hardly play at LB unless things have gone horribly wrong.

The funniest thing about this is so many people groaned when we lost Trill Carter and he only had 9 tackles all season.

People aren’t even using the stupid measurement consistently.

You made your expert opinion and rated it a miss by Sark because you saw a few pictures on the internet? You didn't watch any of his play. You didn't see his PFF grades.

Do you have a weekly recruiting newsletter that I can avoid?

Forget it, he's futureman'ing.

man, idk what to tell you.

GIS results for a position player is literally as far from scientific as you can get.

searching for his name, his name and arizona and his name with UCLA and the only image i see that looks like he is an end is this one:

image.thumb.png.bf5f97a402f550c2df8867b4f5243f15.png

which isn't him, his UCLA # was #98

image.png.f0e653b5df21953e7bfefd67c0fc53a0.png

it's some LB/EDGE dude

image.png.27b2f9d557eb1e8ebc1452b888b8dc3c.png

idk what to tell you. but you running to make a comment about how a guy is a miss and played a position based on a GIS result is just...so you.

CJ said that around 33% of his snaps he lined up over or outside of the Tackle. I would guess those would be 3 man front looks but not sure.

66% were in the B gap.
