Who's  your "surprise" pick for not making it out of the group stage? (Picking England is too easy)

I got Portugal.

England would be shocking. Do you see Panama getting past them?

I take Mexico. Germany is winning that group, I think S. Korea will be the shocking #2 of that group.

In 2003 I started to cook signature dishes for places hosting an event for which I am throwing a watch party.  The first time was the 2003 final four in New Orleans which has great choices for dishes. So I have also done it for every World Cup since then.  For Germany I went all out and got stuff over the internet direct from a German Delhi in New York that has stuff shipped in from Germany. South Africa I cooked from scratch but it was not a hit. For Brazil I cooked the Shrimp, yucca and coconut milk dish and it was a huge hit.

Russia has made me almost want to cancel the tradition. I have watched the Bizarre Foods St Petersburg episode and the Borsch does not look appetizing and Beef Stroganoff looks edible but is a very simple dish. I am not spending on caviar. I got stuff at an Eastern European store here in Austin and I am going to take the plunge. Anyone here eat Russian food expecting to be disappointed and instead was pleasantly surprised?

I've spent some time in Russia. The airplane food home is always better than whatever I've eaten during my stay.

Curious what you served for South African fare. I've never had a bad meal there.

It was almost like a Shepherds Pie but their take on it. (Bobotie)

Pelmeni have raw fillings instead of pre-cooked, a much thinner dough shell, and are rarely sweet, traditionally featuring minced meat and spices. You call a pelmen a pierog, and you can expect a slap in the face. Best to keep your piroshky-hole shut.

The girl there sold me Perogies as Russian and told me to eat them with sour cream.

Seeing that I haven't done my bracket yet, I would be fine with switching if it is better. :D

We have a place in Yekaterinburg if anyone needs somewhere to crash. Team USA ruined my plans

I think they were in Belgium, not certain on legality.

I just saw a clip from a birthday party in Argentina that occurred 8 years ago and everyone was wearing flopping albiceleste jester hats and "Wave Your Flag" was cranking as people from 7 to 70 danced on the dance floor. So I got to thinking... WHAT IS THE WORLD CUP SONG FOR 2018?

I present to you the OFFICIAL WORLD CUP SONG & VIDEO FOR THE 2018 FIFA WORLD CUP in Russia:

Very Russian.

Based on purely the highlights I have USA vs Italy in the final.

Don't include USA in any of this shit!!! Fuck it makes me more depressed

Wales, Honduras, Ghana, Italy, & The Netherlands are probably a little irked by the highlights as well. (Can't remember if Chile was in the clip or not.)

Also don't expect Brazilian Ronaldo or Cafu to be in the Brazilian squad nor Zlatan in the Swedish squad nor Rooney in the England squad in Russia.

I'm thinking that this is the edit provided for computers looking at YouTube from the U.S. I'm guessing that in other parts of the world, the "Official Video" doesn't have very many, or any, USMNT highlights.

This will always be my World Cup anthem:

And someone will probably have to fix the Tapatalk nonsense

If you can understand Spanish, especially if you can understand the Argentine accent, this video is GOLD!!

Hahahaha. That was pretty good. I loved the line about being selfish. Haha.

That is applicable for UT games in the fall as well.

It must have been May of 1998 when I walked into Sound Exchange on the drag. I was buying a sepultura album and the dude working there asked if I had heard Soulfy and explained it was Max from Sepultura’s new band. I bought it and at the time liked much of it. My brothers and I were about to leave for Europe for a month and had plans to see at least one game in France (we didn’t, but that is a whole other story). I recorded a bunch of music to cassette tapes for the trip and Umbabarauma was definitely the World Cup song of the trip. That version has not aged well at all. I tried to listen to it the other day and it was tough to get through. I think the original by Jorge Ben is better, just not heavy.

Lol that video is awesome. Wonder how many couples on surly have had that same thing happen in the fall

More important World Cup news.

Eight years after England fans branded Cristiano Ronaldo the biggest winker in football for getting Wayne Rooney sent off at the World Cup, the sex therapist wife of Portugal keeper Rui Patricio reckons the national team will have a better chance of success if coach Fernando Santos urges his players to...masturbate.

Vera Ribeiro, a psychologist who specialises in sexual matters, has published a book in which she examines the love lives of footballers.

Entitled 'Manual of Seduction', Dr Ribeiro argues that players will be able to cope with anxiety and stress much better during the tournament if they indulge themselves regularly.

She insists that “nothing positive comes from sexual abstinence” - and that forbidding players to make love before games also has a negative impact.

This has to be the greatest World Cup related song ever, right?

it is.

and the new sergio ramos song/video has moved spain's opponent up to #3 on my rooting list.  it is godawful.  the exact opposite of NO england 90.

What's the story on Suarez these days? They still let him play? Is he still awesome when it comes to things on the pitch not involving biting?
