November 20, 20232 yr You sumbitches convinced me to try the Trader Joe's "Thanksgiving" chips.... and gawdammit, they absolutely slam and go hard (stuff and go hard?). Problem is... they're all sold out at the TJs within driving distance. So... Calendar reminder for next year fo sho. (colleague said we should get some of this for a chaser)
November 21, 20232 yr More new flavors from Doritos. They’re going ranch crazy. (That should be Blazin’ Buffalo & Blue Cheese, btw. Philistines.) Are these new? I’m not sure. And I’m not sure how they figure “flamin’ hot” and “cool” at the same time, but whatever.

Unfortunately, I needed to get a replacement coffee carafe today and Walmart on Anderson Lane (Austin) showed that they had one in stock. As I wandered through the store, I happened to walk past the chip aisle. Oh, look, on the end cap -- "Great Value" Jalapeno Chips. Full confession, I am a jalapeno potato chip junkie. I tend towards Kettle Brand, sometimes Zapps or Miss Vickers, maybe HEB every once in awhile. Bought a bag. Holy crap, they don't suck AT ALL. A bit of that sweetness some brands have, a nice heat, nothing crazy, good salt level, eminently munchable. I wonder whose chip they're rebranding? any interest in your personal ranking those brands? or is that the order Kettle > Zapps or Miss Vickers > HEB with Great Value somewhere in there?

Hmmm. I like them all, but I tend to prefer Kettle to Zapps. Seems like the other 3 are about the same, not in flavor per se but my preference. I mean, it would have to be a pretty shitty jalapeno potato chip for me to turn it down.

December 13, 20232 yr You can get your Doritos in liquor form now. This New Doritos Liquor Is More Than Just a Cheesy Gimmick Quote Nacho Cheese Doritos have been a staple of the snack food aisle for nearly half a century. Now, they’re headed to the liquor shelf. In a most unconventional crossover, the iconic tortilla chip brand has partnered with Empirical Spirits to release an 84-proof clear liquor that actually smells and tastes like the real thing, minus the signature crunch — thankfully. Which is to say, it’s unlike any alcohol you’ve ever smelled or tasted before. And we don’t mean that in a bad way. Ensuring the integrity of the new creation is Lars Williams. The former chef and self-avowed flavor expert spent time at Noma before breaking off to co-found Empirical in 2017. Since then, he’s steered the company toward “uncategorized” spirits. This grants him and his team the freedom to experiment without conforming to the well-defined parameters of, say, a gin, a rum, or a whisky. It’s precisely this sort of unrestrained attitude that led to the serendipitous development of a Doritos-flavored booze. “In Empirical’s very early days in Copenhagen, a team member returned from lunch with a sandwich and a bag of Doritos,” Williams recalls of the origin story. “Curiosity led me to turn this snack into a spirit. Upon tasting it, the result was amazing, and we burst into laughter. We shared it with friends, especially chefs. We would just give them a little glass without telling them what it was. The sheer joy in their face was amazing to watch.” Indeed, one sniff of the spirit is enough to reveal its anchor ingredient. The bouquet is brimming with the unmistakable tang of cheese dust. But in the sip, it’s all about cornier elements. It leaves your palate with a drying note, akin to what accumulates on your tongue after you’ve crushed a sizable bag of corn chips. In other words, it’s maybe more Fritos than Doritos. “My goal was to recreate the entire experience of opening a bag of Doritos, getting that signature aroma, followed by its flavor dance across the palate with its unmistakable savory, cheesy, and umami notes,” adds Williams. To get there, he started with a base of distilled beer — pilsner malt, to be precise. The Doritos were then introduced and allowed to infuse in the liquid, under exacting time and temperature. Vacuum distillation, which operates at lower temperatures than traditional distillation, was used to safeguard flavors collected during maceration. Ultimately, you can think of the product as a nacho cheese-flavored vodka. The folks at PepsiCo, Doritos’ parent company, were suitably impressed by the mashup. It was Empirical who approached them with the idea of the collaboration. Despite the unlikely commingling of Noma-pedigreed personnel with America’s most popular snack chip, the pairing makes perfect sense when you realize that high-end chefs have a well-known penchant for off-shift junk food. The release will arrive on shelves next month wearing a cost closer to that of caviar. The limited edition bottle of Empirical x Doritos Nacho Cheese Spirit is set to retail at $65 — nearly twice the average sum of super premium vodkas. The ability to show up at a Super Bowl party offering shots of Doritos, however, is surely priceless. Just don’t hold your breath for a Cool Ranch follow-up. Williams tried that and wasn’t happy with the results. Perhaps some Funyuns rum, instead?
December 13, 20232 yr peanut butter and strawberry jam on white with Fritos and a glass of 2% milk is an all-time comfort lunch. I am 65. I have hated plain milk since I was a toddler. I doubt I have drank a quart of plain milk across 60+ years. I cook with it. I like chocolate milk. But I ain’t drinking it.

December 20, 20232 yr Found these at the Mexican grocery. They’re pretty good. They’re a lot darker than I was expecting based on the packaging. They’re tangy like salt ‘n’ vinegar chips with a sweet chile pepper flavor. They’re not as puffed up as regular Doritos. They’re a little closer to normal tortilla chips. I’ll bet they’d be good for dipping guacamole.

I was a normal kid that drank milk pretty much every day. I haven't had any sense, and that was over 40 years ago. The thought of drinking milk disgusts me.

December 27, 20231 yr I also just sort of quit drinking milk over time. I don't know exactly when it happened, but it's been at least 15 years since I've had a glass. Probably coincided with my not eating cereal for breakfast any more, which kind of started in college when I could have eggs and meat in the dorm every day.

December 27, 20231 yr For anyone in west Houston, 99Ranch Market just opened in the Shadowbriar area. Its almost directly across Westheimer from Phoenicia. They have most of the Asian flavored chips noted above. Both stores are worth the visit.

December 27, 20231 yr Where might one acquire those?Interestingly enough, also at 99 Ranch. Their chip selection is amazing. Also, their produce (all the mushrooms) is incredible. Big fan of the store as a whole, even though weekend parking is a circus.

January 5, 20241 yr Posted this in the Las Vegas thread but going to go ahead and post it here as well since it is chip-related.
January 11, 20241 yr Okay, I posted about the “Incógnita” Doritos above. Kroger has given me some free bag of Doritos coupons so I tried the “Flamas” flavor. There are some similarities between the two. The flavor is in the same ballpark. Here’s a pic I took of the Flamas, it was taken when I was toward the end of the bag so there aren’t a lot of big chips making a more appealing photo. It is what it is. The Flamas chips are more puffed up like regular Doritos and have more of a kick. They’re definitely hotter. If it’s not too crude then I should mention that if you spit after eating some Incógnita chips, your saliva will be blood red. Same with the Flamas chips except the Flamas chips will color your fingers a lot more. I said I thought the Incógnita chips would work well with guacamole. I tested that and I was right. It was a novelty and worthwhile but not an “Oh my god you have to try this!” sort of thing. Anyway, that’s my report. I bought another bag (with another free coupon). I think these are legit. They taste like you’d expect them to taste from looking at the bag. Still haven’t tried the Late Night Taco flavor.
