Solid opening weekend. We obviously have things to work on. San Diego is a solid team. Wouldn’t be surprised if they win their conference

    No surprise but it's official.

  • Super excited for this season. April 16 circled on the calendar. My son is a true freshman OF at UTRGV. Right now it's looking like he won't redshirt. He's the fourth or fifth OF on the squad.

Jesus we're loaded.    If we add one more good arm from the portal, I think we have a legitimate argument to be ranked #1 in the preseason polls.

Yes, that is a good team.

USD's coach cracked me up.  Total SoCal guy, happy to be here.

Week 1 bullpen circle of trust update

We trust you: Fontenot, Boehm, Shaw, Harrison, Shaw, Tole

We are intrigued: Tumis, Grubbs, Howard

We are okay with inherited runners scoring: Duplantier

We think we trust you but please don't throw 84 again: Whitehead

Too early to tell/we can't trust you yet: Selvig, Lummus, Hamilton

I don't trust Shaw right now.   His command isn't very good.

Sadly, you should probably throw Witt into the last category as of now.

Yeah, I almost bumped him out of first category but he's found a way in both his outings so far and had a good track record last year.

I do agree though that I see him as more of a lefty specialist than true closer right now.

This makes me sad, knowing that if we didn’t suffer some injuries in the off-season, our bullpen would be pretty dang good.

Yep. Even just Mercer would change this team, let alone another high-potential starter. Those injuries suck.

Having Mercer available would almost certainly allow us to move someone like Luke Harrison to the rotation. Domino effect. Sucks that this program is snakebit by the preseason or early season injury bug. Hamilton/Petrinsky 2019, Duplantier 2021 coming off the Covid season where he was throwing 94 with a wipeout slider, Witt 2022, Harrison 2023, Mercer 2024. Hell, might have to throw Witt in there again for 2024 again if they can't figure out what is wrong.

Shit weather and playing from behind every game will do that

It would be really nice for this pitching staff if Harrison could emerge as a legitimate starter.

No kidding. And I'd love for Witt to be a middle reliver/setup man if he gets his mojo back. Actually he'd probably work his way back into a starter if he gets his shit together. Either would help us tremendously

I mostly want to believe Pierce wouldn't have put Witt out there if he didn't think he could perform, and the in-game interview made it seem like he was a little baffled, but my goodness, the guy just doesn't seem ready.  I hope it's physical, and not between his ears.

Isn't this what Tanner did late in the year last season?  I mean I'm 100% for him doing well and if it something he can work through now is the time.

Is this really shocking?

Last year could be chalked up to rushing back and just not regaining command of his stuff yet. Now that he is two years removed any lingering command issues should have been ironed out by this point.

The mystery physical setback referenced by Pierce seems to be the elephant in the room. If it is a bone spur, that is not good. If he got it operated on he wouldn’t be able to even pick up a ball for about 6 weeks and his season would very much be in jeopardy. On the same token, at least it would explain what we are seeing and not all hope would be lost for his future prospects. It sucks that the kid turned down huge money to try to bet on himself and try to lead this team back to Omaha, and this is how his season starts.

Or maybe he doesn't pass a MLB physical.

So is this

Along with CBS moneywhipping the NCAA and being the first team to leave Omaha with one loss and no trophy in 1989.

Curious with you guys that are dialed in.

Is max Belyeu a player you want to keep or if he transfers are you good? I’m just curious, I’ve known his mom since the 80s and is a friend. He was a badass in aledo and had to wait his turn last year with a loaded outfield.

Needs to start hitting, but his arm looked good the other night.

He’s got a good swing. Seems like a matter of time till he figures it out

DC took time to figure it out. At first, he couldn't to save his life.

It looks to me like this team is overall a bit more talented than last years team.   We still have some roles to be figured out.   In particular I think Pierce will be forced to rethink some of the pitching roles he had in mind.   My biggest concern at this point is catcher.   Not sure there's a solution to avoid being very mediocre at that position.

^^That's a really bad position to be weak in.

I think this years team will hit better top to bottom. Last year sometimes it felt like a miracle if anyone outside the first 4 in the order would get a hit. Pitching is probably gonna be about the same as last year. Catching... blah. Our defense appears to have had more wtf moments but that is something that will improve as the season goes on. No reason this team cant win the big 12 and host a super.

His inability to pull the trigger at times is perplexing. Really good at working counts and taking walks but sometimes he needs to go up there being the aggressor.

If it's as simple as a confidence issue then I would think that would just get better with time.

Correct, I'm too worried about it right now. Small sample size and all.

The emergence of Dee Kennedy might hurt him because that will push Thomas to CF more often, with Gasparino shifting over to RF. This leaves Belyeu mainly only DH opportunities, but obviously they are still tinkering with things.

Football this year if we couldve converted one of the four fucking pass attempts from the 10 yard line.

I think Keith mentioned Tuesday night that this Sunday's game would be shown on LHN in the evening, rather than live. Did anyone else catch that?

Yes, he said Softball is at the same time and they would be showing that live. I thought I heard him say that the baseball game would be live on the ESPN app and then re-broadcasted on LHN later in the evening.

Eh. We had a lot of stuff break our way last season. Also no guarantee we would have beat MICH. That was a damn good squad.

What I know about Cal Poly

  • Lost 2 of 3 to Missouri at home to open the year. The first two games were super low scoring with the Sunday game a 12-8 loss. Beat North Dakota State on a walk-off last night.
  • Returned 6 of their top 7 hitters from last year off a team that wasn't good
  • Lost their best starter and 3 best relievers off last year's team. Start a lefty on Fridays who is experienced with good strikeout numbers, Saturday guy is a righty struck out 12 last week against Missouri. Sunday starter was hit around (8 hits in 4.2 innings, 4 earned runs).
  • One thing about their staff is they don't walk many guys. Stuff is not great but they aren't going to be beating themselves.
  • Their starting 1B is 6'3 270 and he looks every part of it.
  • Facing another great defensive catcher this weekend (Ryan Stafford). Played for Team USA this past summer.

Offensively they are a pretty big step down from San Diego. If we can't get Hurley and Howard through 5 against this lineup I am going to be concerned.

Hindsight is 20/20, but Powell was hit by that pitch when it was 13-2 in the 6th and we had already begun to empty the bench. That AB probably could have gone to someone else, especially with how wild the HCU staff was.

Dude.. let's not do this. It was the 6th.

I know. That’s why I said hindsight. Gasparino and Thomas had already been subbed out by the time Powell came up. It’s just more frustrating than anything that something like that happened when a game was out of hand and he was likely about to be replaced anyway.

Edited by Hookem2147

I'm also not all that bummed about it. We should handle them easily without PP and it's probably good to get Borba more reps. Doesn't sound like it's a major issue.
