LifeAlert... but no monthly fee and calls family instead?

Featured Replies

Have an aging parent. Due to work, can't always be in close proximity. Looking for something that she can wear that can send me a call/text if she needs help. Think LifeAlert (Help, I've fallen, and I can't get up!). The only catch is LifeAlert carries a hefty monthly fee and also calls their call center -- not a family member.

I want something that will alert me instead so I can go check on her if needed and assess the situation. She won't always remember the phone when she gets up and can't always work it if she did have it with her. Instead, would love to just have a button she wears that she can press to let me know I'm needed.

Smart watch, Alexa, Apple homepod, google assistant?

A lot of the smart watches have fall detection. I bought my mom one and it is set to call me in case it detects a fall.

Ohhhh, Alexa. That's a decent thought.

Smartwatch is likely a no-go. That's something that requires charging and can get messed up.

They make smart watches for seniors, the downside is they would need to be in range of their phone for it to work.  I'd get a watch and scatter some alexas throughout the house.

Check your mother's insurance. My mom had humana and they covered Lifeline 100%. It was also set up to call a service, but the one time she used it they called me first.

I am in South Florida at the GF's elderly mother's house.  We are here because she had a fall. I brought an alexa device with me from home to set up in her house.

Don't be a cheap ass. My grandma had a fall and broke her femur. Left the cell phone inside the house so she was outside for 7 hours before someone heard her yell for help.

That is nightmare fuel.  So sorry that happened to grandma.
