Can be a little confusing, as University Blvd is "The Strip" but only a certain district. That road goes all the way to downtown but theyre distinct areas. If you google the Waffle House on University and then move from that east toward the stadium, that is the area known as The Strip. Theyre appx 3/4 a mile or a mile apart. Easy 10-15 min walk if you are at Embassy Suites. It may be worth walking down to the Strip just to see the "fun" in person, but it wont get going until closer to midnight.

Best I can do is Hokkaido hibachi bar! :)

Japanese, but....potato-puh tah toe.

Down for Hokkaido if there’s sake bombs

hate travelling across the country to sit in the corner of the upper deck.  thinking of just getting tix in the endzone N4.  think it will be less fun?

I'm with you. I'd rather sit down low amongst the enemy but my buddy was hell bent on sitting near allies to avoid fights. My last 2 road games were Notre Dame and Cal and I remember maybe the first quarter of each so I'm guessing it really won't matter where I sit.

Try to sit near her.

For a large group you may want to check out Wheelhouse as it usually has more room on a football weekend than a lot of the smaller bars.  It is in Temerson Square where they are several other bars if it doesn't do it for you.  If you are looking for some live music Adam Hood is playing at the Copper Top (also in Termerson Square) on Friday and Saturday nights.  And I second Avenue Pub for a bite to eat and they have a large bar upstairs as well.

I was at the 09 Rose Bowl and got so drunk at the tailgate I got lost in the stadium for the entire first quarter.  Missed Colt's injury, finally found my seats and my people and had zero idea what was going on.

Anyone staying in Birmingham and considering hitting up one of the Barons' games this weekend?

I hate that I am going to be unable to make the trip for this game.  This match-up reminds me of the 2005 Ohio State game at the Shoe.  I was there and the national championship game against USC.   I felt the Ohio State game was a turning point in the program.  I hope this one is as well.   The win just seemed to give confidence to the team and the fans.  I am jealous of you all who get to witness it and hope you get to enjoy what I felt in 2005 in Columbus.

Nicely done here. I feel like anything west of Innisfree is downtown and the strip is the "campus corner" type area. This is a very good graphic representation. Parking will be much less of an issue downtown and you can walk between the two if that's your thing. Its sidewalked the entire way.

Also...if you don't try the smoked wings at Moe's BBQ, you're doin' it wrong.

Yep, Innisfree is sorta the beginning of no-man's land. I was in there on Sunday, and I was surprised to see how much it had changed. Lots shadier than it was 15 years ago. Food sucked. Don't eat there. Booze was fine.

It's a neat enough spot, but it's definitely over there by itself. I miss the old Innisfree. And the Booth. And the old Houndstooth. And...

The problem with Innisfree is it's not next to anything, although plenty walkable to other spots, but they charge ungodly covers on bigger game weekends.

Another good thing about the Avenue Pub, I was in there a few weeks ago waiting on our table for lunch on a Sunday.  In walks Jason Aldean and his posse (he was playing the Amp that night) and he sent his head flunky up to the host expecting to get a table.  They told him that it would be a thirty-minute wait, so he turned around and walked out.  Made the Chicken Club Sandwich (grilled, with avocado) especially tasty.

Try that in a small town.  Then go get some McDonald's.

Don’t threaten me with a good time

Got to the airport exit and realized I had left my RV pass at home. Hauled ass back home and made it back as my group was boarding. So this is starting…ok.

I’ve done something similar….got to Bergstrom only to realize I left my phone….turned around…made it back luckily…you can’t travel without your phone…not a good feeling.  Always leave with time to spare….you guys yell for the rest of us back home.  Hook’m!

Is there a thread to try to sell tickets for other games? I cannot make it to Kansas or the Kansas State game and would like to make sure Texas fans take my place so I don't want to sell on SeatGeek.

I'm working on a partnership to sell tickets through surly via tickpick, but you can sell them in the best buy coupons board.

I'm thinking about making a sub board during season for football tickets as a child to the football board - maybe I'll do that right now.

We fly into Atlanta at ~2 PM. Any tips on places to stop between Atlanta and Tuscaloosa for food?

Any suggestions from the locals for breakfast or donut places in Birmingham?

image.gif.3dc2de01a5a10ec1ebd79dd645675bd0.gif

My favorite breakfast in Birmingham is Dimitri’s in Homewood. It’s a BBQ joint by day and their lunch is great too, but they do a good breakfast and it’s always filling. If you’re downtown, Frothy Monkey. I’ll defer to others on the donut scene.
Ruby Sunshine is another favorite. Highly recommend.

Really the only town of any size between the two is Anniston unless you get to Bham, and I don’t know that there’s a whole lot worth stopping for in Anniston besides chains. It’s only a 2 hour drive to Birmingham so I’d recommend just getting to Bham and finding something. I can make plenty of recs there.

A Texas fan sitting near me at that game got thrown out before the end of the first series. His girlfriend sat all by herself silently the entire rest of the game.

Barons stadium (Regions Field) is a great venue.

Old Houndstooth was great. The new one blows. It's like they turned Hoover into a bar.

Where are you staying? There are quite a few good places, but I can give you a better rec if I know where you're located.

Dimitri's is good. So is Big Bad Breakfast. Another Broken Egg is okay. Hero Donuts, Shipley's Donuts, any Krispy Kreme place is good. Ruby Sunshine is good.

I second this. I've been to Anniston on three different occasions for a total of five weeks and the only thing I've found to be decent in that shitbox was the burger and chicken strips at Coldwater Mountain brewing.

Before every big road trip I make a checklist and tape it to the front door.

That way I see it every time I leave and know what I need to get.

Also great for one last glance before leaving on your trip.

I've found sticking to beer only is the safest way to keep some semblance of whit to navigate games.  Once the hard stuff comes into play, all bets are off.

If you just want food and don't care, Oxford (the stop immediately before Anniston if you're coming from Atlanta) has Chipotle, Five Guys, Buffalo Wild Wings, and all that shit.

The point of my post wasn't where to eat as much as don't try to do it in Anniston.

I was just using your post as an opportunity to reply to the actual question about if there's anywhere to eat between Atlanta and Tuscaloosa. The answers are, in order from East to West, Oxford, Birmingham, Bessemer (Bright Star). I agree there is no good reason to stop in Anustown.

Immamac - sure it’s upstream on one of the previous pages, but do y’all need help lugging/setting shit up at 7 (or whenever checkin time is) Saturday?

Nothing but beer was consumed. I think.

Stopped on the way tonight at Vicksburg Ameristar casino.  Made a reasonable parlay bet for 60 bucks on the money line for Miami to beat aggy and Texas to beat Alabama .  Pays $514. I am going to make another bet in the morning before I leave for Tuscaloosa on Texas to win big.  Fuck it.

"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, laughers, screamers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can."

- The Good Doktor, 1971

I wonder what happens when enough surly posters get on the same flight together? I think there are only two direct AUS-BHM flights tomorrow one on United and one on American.
