I'm not enough of a circuit expert to say one way or another but guys I trust think that. There was a rumor it was based on a Jose modded Marshall, but James Brown at Peavey categorically denies it.
July 17, 20232 yr I'll submit Jack White to the "guys still alive" list. You’ve raised the Brickhorn alarm.
July 17, 20232 yr That's the one that really was just hanging right there in the back of my mind. For some reason I never get tired of playing the intro to Johnny B Goode. Or Maybelline. Or any of a dozen others.

The SLO is a 2203 power section basically, but it doesn't really break up like the 2203. Plus the SLO has multiple channels, and relies on preamp distortion and has a cold clipper. The SLO power section is very Hifi in practice. I'd say a SLO is a JCM800 with a Mesa preamp, but that is disrespectful to Soldano, as Mesa blatantly ripped of the SLO for the Rectifier series, so it's actually other way around

July 23, 20232 yr I’m not the biggest “noodling” fan but these are a couple of great players. And I love the way DZ can switch from “noodling” to straight taste. And Steve is such a great player too. I saw the first tour of “Zappa plays Zappa,” in Houston and I was blown away. All that to say, these two should be in the conversation. Oh yeah, and let’s throw Frank in there as well. July 23, 20232 yr I went and saw Christine Kingfish Ingram live a few weeks ago. He’s the best guitar player I’ve seen live in a long time.

Technically impressive, and his tone is out of this world (essentially a Pro-Rat pedal into a 5150-like amp. Totally agree with you. He was my favorite guitar player back in the day. I saw them in concert 3 times and he was just nails. His play on the new album "Six" is amazing as well.

Guthrie is ridiculously good, and probably my favorite currently active guitarist still at their peak. I've seen him live twice with the Aristocrats, he played incredibly difficult and varied music and was literally perfect doing it twice. His hands are like camel spiders, comically oversized for the rest of his frame. My favorite solo of his is from this Steven Wilson song, just beautiful, melodic and haunting. May 22, 20241 yr Check out this solo from early Shawn Lane, before he gained so much weight that he had to sit down on stage. The song is 80s cover band trash and I hate the singer, but Shawn's solo is outstanding.
April 13Apr 13 So, regarding great guitarists, on "Beat It", you have two: Steve Lukather and EVH. I will submit as great and unexpected as EVH's solo on the song, Lukather's playing is what makes the song. His repeated riff is about as much in the groove as any guitar I've heard on any song. The door knock in the background implying EVH wants in is magic, though.

But when EVH strolls in and blasts out that all-time legendary solo in one fucking take, you have a runaway winner right there.
April 14Apr 14 There is no best. But the fact that Jerry Reed hasn't been mentioned yet when Dave Matthews has been mentioned (even in jest) is a crime.

April 15Apr 15 Most of my favorites have been listed, so I'll add a couple that I didn't see on the thread. Tony Rice: Terry Kath (supposedly Hendrix called him the best guitarist in the universe):
