July 15, 20232 yr I'm not looking for a debate - best documentary is Ken Burns' Civil War, best movies are Gettysburg, Glory, Gods and Generals, and Lincoln. I just wanted a reason to post this interview with Stephen Lang because he is fucking amazing. He's not just an actor who has thrown his visible support behind trying to save American battlefields, he knows his shit and he's an all-round nice guy. The only problem is it's just 37 minutes. You can listen to it in the background, but you should watch it.
July 15, 20232 yr I think I remember some real rinky-dink 'documentary' in the late 90s with live action dramatizations. I remember because they cast black people fighting for the south.
July 15, 20232 yr I thought Cold Mountain was good. Gone with the Wind will make a lot of folks’ lists, but I don’t care for it. The musical score for Glory is outstanding.
July 15, 20232 yr The Friendly Persuasion is a great movie based around the impact of the war on a Quaker family. Gary Cooper.Shenandoah is also a good civil war movie with Jimmy Stewart. Worst….the film they showed for years at the tourist center at Shiloh. In Scouts we’d use that film as a break on like an 18 mile hike. Each time was an opportunity for spotting mistakes. Half the Union soldiers wearing wristwatches. A jet flying overhead as they show PGT Beauregard on his horse losing the battle after switching to his Napoleonic tactics after Johnston died. A couple of Grants aides wearing mirror sunglasses. National Park trash cans on the edge of scenes. Cans of Coke at the bloody pond.
July 20, 20232 yr Ride With the Devil is an underrated Civil War movie about Confederate Bushwackers. Tobey Macguire and a surprisingly good job by Jewel. 1999
