July 17, 20232 yr We have a thread for the USWNT, but I think the World Cup should get its own thread. And this thing kicks off Thursday. There are a lot of storylines going into this World Cup. Most obviously is the US and their quest for a 3rd straight title. But England, Spain, Germany and France are right there looking to knock them off. There are also a ton of injuries going into this world cup, so a lot of teams are short handed. Group Stage July 20-Aug 3 Round of 16 - Aug 5-Aug 8 Quarter-Finals - Aug 11-12 Semi-Finals - Aug 15-16 Final - Aug 20 Being hosted in 2 countries they have the groups arranged per country to minimize travel: Groups A-C-E-G are in New Zealand, Groups B-D-F-H are in Australia. Once the tournament enters the KO round, it's a little more jumbled, though a little more tilted toward Australia. Here are the groups: GROUP A New Zealand Norway Switzerland Philippines GROUP B Canada Nigeria Australia Rep. of Ireland GROUP C Japan Costa Rica Spain Zambia GROUP D England China PR Haiti Denmark GROUP E United States Netherlands Portugal Vietnam GROUP F France Brazil Jamaica Panama GROUP G Sweden South Africa Italy Argentina GROUP H Germany Colombia Korea Republic Morocco
July 17, 20232 yr Vietnam is 3 points. I'm assuming Portugal isn't good enough to beat the US. Netherlands should be a good game.
July 17, 20232 yr Author Defector has some team previews, if you want to know about them, should be good stuff: GROUP A New Zealand Norway Switzerland Philippines GROUP B Australia Canada Nigeria Rep. of Ireland
July 17, 20232 yr Excited for this tournament. Plan on watching as many games as possible. Hope the US takes it, but don't the the US Vs. The World crap used in commercials.
July 19, 20232 yr I certainly have more belief in this younger US squad than the group of old ass has-beens we sent to the Olympics in Japan, but several European teams have finally caught up to the US and the US will be without their most reliable scorer, Mallory Swanson, due to injury. My prediction is a 3rd place finish for the USA this go around but I’m hoping for a 3 peat of course
July 20, 20232 yr Interesting first game. Disappointed in the second result, hoped the loser would show better.
July 20, 20232 yr As best I can tell, here's the date/time for US games: Group stage: Friday 7/21, 8pm vs Vietnam Wednesday 7/26, 8pm vs Netherlands Tuesday 8/1, 2am vs Portugal If we win Group E: Round of 16: Saturday 8/5, 9pm Quarterfinals: Thursday 8/10, 8pm Semifinals: Tuesday 8/15, 3am 3rd Place: Saturday 8/19, 3am Final: Sunday 8/20, 5am If we get 2nd in Group E: Round of 16: Sunday 8/6, 4am Quarterfinals: Friday 8/11, 2:30am

July 21, 20232 yr Yeah, that was deserved. The first half was pretty slow, but it turned out to be a pretty good match.

I turned it on in the 60th minute and was entertained. Credit Nigeria for trying to win when in reality they’re probably thrilled to get a point.
July 21, 20232 yr Swiss starting to dominate. Don't like the Penalty call. yeah, she got kicked, but she also laid out and there was nothing the defense could do to miss her.

It’s kind of soft, but about as clear of a penalty as you will see.

July 21, 20232 yr USA vs. Vietnam is the most lopsided matchup on paper this tournament. This should be a 10-0 type game, but goals have been tough to come by so far this tournament for whatever reason, so I’ll predict 7-0 USA over Vietnam

July 22, 20232 yr 30 seconds into the tourney rodman gets both legs wiped out from under her, ref says no foul. great start.
July 22, 20232 yr Our local Fox station is of the air due to a carriage dispute. So Univision it is. Luckily we are both fluent in Spanish.
July 22, 20232 yr At first I thought Vietnam was just kind of clumsy, but they are straight playing dirty.

July 22, 20232 yr Author I was about to say Denmark was looking to do the same. But that offsides attacker really affected the keeper.
