I hate that this is probably right. If he doesn't play, then the narrative is that they would have won with Mateer at QB. If he plays, they will spend the whole game talking about what a tough competitor he is for playing through an injury. If we win, it will be because Mateer wasn't 100%. If we lose, it will be that much worse.

the narrative? who cares about the narrative? OU can spend all offseason puffing up their chest and playing the "what if" game for all I care.

was Alabama sad that they had to beat a Garret Gilbert-led Texas team in the NC? Or did they just celebrate the NC and say fuck the narrative?

#4709

While I fully believed we were going to beat a healthy OU team, the benefit of this is what it does inside Norman.

If Mateer is healthy and OU finishes 7-5, there is real heat on Venables and questions about the narrative Nagy has been building. With Mateer out, OU can go 7-5 and everyone will believe they were just one injury away. Venables will be back, Nagy will still be perceived to be a genius, and we get the continued mediocrity of Oklahoma football.

In terms of just football talk, a run-only QB behind the worst run blocking line in the Power 4 should be a nightmare for them.

You act like we should know who that is

Did you watch the game last year? The one where the QB couldn't pass and fumbled multiple times? He's that guy.

Ah. Well I didn’t see the game last year. So that makes sense then.

"The narrative" matters if we are a bubble team for the CFP. Which can happen if Arch has another crappy game against a good opponent. A 9-3 Texas that has quality wins may still have a shot to get in, but it's a lot harder if our best win is against an OU team that didn't have its QB.

Breaking: Oklahoma QB John Mateer will undergo surgery Wednesday to address a right-hand injury he sustained against Auburn, head coach Brent Venables announced.Venables said the expectation is that Mateer will return to action sometime this season.

Fuck OU, but I want to beat them when they're at their best!

I see your point, but 49-0 was a HELL OF A TIME.

Well this just tells me that Venables isn’t really in charge, otherwise he’d be playing. Nagy isn’t on the chopping block yet, so he can make the call.

So Mateer didn’t even make it through his first SEC game without getting injured?

They dont hit as hard in the quasi Mountain West.

Unless Aggie is playing very well coming into Thanksgiving with Texas victory, the hypothetical chance we had getting an at large bid with 2 SEC losses is gone.

It just means more surgeries.

While Oklahoma coach Brent Venables didn't provide a specific timetable for Mateer's return, sources told Thamel that the estimated timeline after surgery is expected to be about a month, as the surgery is considered straight-forward.

Fuck OU and all that. But this is why I would rather play a healthy team. It's not because I give a shit about Mateer or that portable methlab of a program. It's because it gives them and everyone else excuses to undervalue our win.

Who is "they?" Winners write the narrative. Nobody outside of Norman will give a shit who played or didn't play on the losing side. Just like nobody outside of Austin gives a shit about or even remembers Colt's injury.

Thats what they get for running him on short yardage plays. Their lack of running game just cost them their season.

Chance he misses Red River has to be super low, right? Not like OU cares about the health of their players.

He will miss actual game time with this. Its his throwing hand and the article is quoted as the best chance for long term recovery. This was not a band aid situation.
