Talked to a coworker (who is an OU grad) yesterday and he said, "Yeah, there's no way Mateer plays. Recovery time is not just 3-4 weeks. He might be out for more like 6 weeks. If he tries to play in the Cotton Bowl he'll reinjure his hand. I'm fully prepared to lose to Texas again with Hawkins." At least he's honest.

At least he's honest. It's so obvious he won't play in the Texas/OU game. Why would OU risk the rest of their season and BV's job for one game? I know, I know, it's THE game, but he goes out there in Dallas, gets re-injured and they lose anyway, now you're relying on Michael Hawkins against South Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Bama, Missouri, LSU 6-6/5-7 would be staring them in the face, with a Venables firing looming. He isn't going to survive that. 5-0 going into Dallas, punt the Texas game, 5-1 with Mateer healthy and they really just need to go 4-2/3-3 and BV is secure.

At least he's honest. The commentary I have seen is that basically after a couple weeks he can't injure it worse, it's just a matter of if he can grip and throw realistically. I would guess he returns for OU's home game vs. Ole Miss, and that the game-winning play in the Cotton Bowl is made by a defensive player, not either QB.

AS much as OU fans would hate that, this is the right call for Brent. I bet he'd rather lose to us with Hawkins and get Mateer back a week or two after once the Sooner schedule gets tough. If Mateer plays us and gets reinjured and they lose, no way does Hawkins beat a majority of their remaining opponents and Brent would be fired.

September 26Sep 26 Yeah no way Mateer practices the next few weeks. He's gotta rest up and wait til he's medically cleared. Although wouldn't surprise me if OU medically clears him just to try and win Red River. Edited September 26Sep 26 by Longboard Horn OU sucks
September 26Sep 26 19 hours ago, statsman said: Ian Boyd posted that the surgery stabilizes the thumb, and that there really isn’t much risk of worsening the injury after a couple of weeks. It comes down to whether he can grip and throw the football. That may take more time. Or not. Mateer also has a sprained knee. That could use some rest, too. I think there is a good chance Mateer can play. I don’t know how much of a chance there is that he doesn’t play. In2009, the Sooners rushed Bradford back from a first week knee sprain to play in the RRS. He worsened the injury, missed the rest of the season and still went 1-1 in the draft. OU needed to win that game to have a hope of making the BCS CG. This year, they can make the CFP with a loss to Texas, but would need Mateer in good shape for their stretch run. But they really, really want to beat Texas. Maybe it depends on who makes the decision- Nagy or Venables? Bradford didn't have a sprained knee, he had a dislocated shoulder, and after Williams tackled him he broke his collar bone. Holy shit, Ian Boyd is a fucking moron. I just saw this. If the recovery time is a month, minimum, then how is there not risk in playing him before it's healed? Hell, get him out there at practice now and shoot him up with painkillers if that's the case.

Yeah, that's why I think Kiffin stays. Ole Miss alums have deep pockets, and their NIL program is solid. His family loves Oxford, so what's his motivation to leave? Less pressure, comparable money.

It was nondisplaced so you're fixating it with instrumentation to actually make sure it stays nondisplaced. So if the surgical swelling/pain go down, you're not risking much injury if the surgeon feels it's stable. Again, I do pain and rehab but work closely with orthos including blackhawks/chisox/bulls back in the day and you'd be amazed how much shit wasn't disclosed back then for lesser procedures.

Curious what other stuff folks are taking just to feel better, etc. Figured I'd ask a doctor since the topic came up.

You got my point outside of that, I just didn't want to come across as any more of a pompous imbecile than I normally do. Allegedly what Thamel's been told is Mateer thinks one month, but that might be ignoring the notion of a few weeks of rehab. He's obviously a pretty tough guy, so I wouldn't bet against Ole Miss, but if the team fares well ahead of that and he's in pain and needing rehab, staying out through the off week in prep for what looks like 3 really tough games wouldn't be the dumbest move.

Sure, fair, and I considered making a similar point. I guess I took it to mean something along the lines of “no statistically significant risk beyond the baseline risk of playing football”.

Exactly, the Texas fan base is going to worry the whole week leading up to it, the OU fan base will too because they will be delusional enough to think someone if going to recovery and risk it that fast.

Understand, I should also say I can't recall a situation where the first person to apply such logic to an injury is the person who actually is the person who has the injury and must weigh the value of their playing over the potential cost of a more significant or permanent injury.
September 26Sep 26 With 2 seconds left in the 4th, we’ll take the timeout on 2nd down and kick the FG for a 52-0 win.
