September 26Sep 26 Venables gets a mulligan if they sit Mateer and get beat by Texas. Nobody is going to blame him. He needs to sit Mateer for self-preservation unless the dude is anywhere close to 100%.

I think the goodwill is high enough with Venables right now that he doesn't need the excuse directly to save his job. That could obviously change based on the rest of the year.

But he could feel great and push to play, between him and his surgeon imo. But with OU's schedule they can easily lose 2 and definitely be in and if they lose 3 and one is w no Mateer they still have a decent shot.

If Vegetables loses to Texas but otherwise has a great year and hits the playoffs they'll be happy to be functional again and aim at us next year.

Yeah, there are few defenses in college football you would never want to play an injured QB against with a shitty OL. We are one of them.
September 27Sep 27 I'm not so sure I wouldn't prefer Mateer trying to come back for our game. The injury and surgery is to his throwing hand. If he comes back for that game, his passing is going to be all kinds of fucked up, he will be a fumbling machine if he tries to run the ball, and we are going to attack him mercilessly with Simmons and co.

We get the public hype of beating OU at "full strength" while Mateer will be functionally limited and running less. He likely wouldn't finish the game. Also, Mateer getting reinjured and making his thumb worse would doom their season. Only an idiot would rush him back for the Texas game. I fully expect BV to rush him back for the Texas game.

Collin Simmons is sitting at 6 tackles, 1.5 TFLs for -5 yards, and 1.5 sacks. Both good players, but not really putting up the kind of numbers people hype them up for.

Anthony Hill had 8 sacks, 19 TFLs and was First Team All SEC last year. Colin Simmons had 9 sacks and 17 TFLs last year and was the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year. Worth noting that they combined for 2 sacks, 6 TFLs and a forced fumble against OU last year. Is your contention that they've both gotten significantly worse based on box score reading from primarily meaningless games so far this year?

But even he does play, if they do rush him back...fuck it. We win anyways. Besides, it woudln't matter...OU has a built in excuse either way. They lose without Mateer "wouldn't have beat us with him" and if he plays and they lose "he wasn't' fully healthy" Just beat Florida. Beat OU either way, and move on.

October 1Oct 1 God damn, thats fucked up. Aggy dad and sooner son. Don't ever let anyone tell you that bad decision making can't be hereditary.
October 1Oct 1 I don't think there is any chance that he plays. It's a free roll for OU (from a playoff committee perspective) and Venables (from a job preservation perspective). Nobody is going to blame OU if they lose without Mateer and of course Texas won't get any credit if they beat OU without their heisman candidate. Of course, if OU wins regardless, then everyone pretty much plugs them in as a playoff team and championship contender. So why would OU risk playing an injured player without real practice time when they have little downside and significant upside letting him heal? Even as dumb as most Sooners are, this one seems too obvious to me no matter how much we all hear he's planning to play, gametime decision etc. etc. the next 10 days.

October 1Oct 1 Just now, thunderlounge said: Nah, I get it. But never say never, and all that shit. I'm just saying a 9-3 OU team with a loss to Texas with Mateer playing will be viewed differently than a 9-3 OU team with a Texas loss and no Mateer. That would be a huge talking point when evaluating similarly ranked teams. To be clear, I'm working off the assumption Mateer would be playing less than 100%, be less effective and/or more likely to re-injure if he plays that soon after surgery. Obviously if that isn't the case then he starts, but that just doesn't seem very likely.
October 1Oct 1 I hope that motherfucker does make it back in time for the game. Fuck him and fuck oklahoma.

Mateer being considered a Heisman candidate is all you need to know about how shitty the field is this season if he REALLY is a contender. I think it's more along the lines he looked good against a crappy Michigan team and a horrible Auburn team where in the later they still need some help from the Refs to get the W. Because we saw what kind of team Auburn was against aggy the following week

October 1Oct 1 Man it was quiet while he was winning and Arch was getting by. you think Arch would have finished a game with a broken hand. doesn't matter what happens at RRS at worst they are tied.
