Yeah, talent assessment is a core function of the job of a coach.  It's understandable for OU fans to think Arnold would be good.  The coaches saw him every day for a year and still made the decisions they made.

To be clear, Arnold had obvious bust flags surrounding him during his recruitment, and we laughed at his elevation to 5 star status on the recruiting board in real time. He was a QB camp hero. His family spent plenty of time lobbying scouts and the services to consider him in their rankings. He had zero elite skills or gifts. He is from Georgia, has deep ties to Georgia, went to several Georgia camps, and Kirby Smart and staff never aggressively pursued him. He couldn't beat out Eli Stowers in HS.

Sarkisian and staff never took him seriously as a recruit either. You follow this stuff long enough, you can start to see the frauds at the high glamour positions based on these kinds of factors and others. No one as a paid person or as a fan gets all of it right, but sometimes things jump out.

The regulars on the $9.95er board were happy to see Arnold go to OU and have enjoyed watching his overhype and collapse. The fact that his family strong-armed the Venables staff into letting Gabriel walk and anteing up more NIL was comical to watch. From the Arnold camp's end, the claim is that OU has paid Arnold over $1.5M over two years to be one of the biggest busts of all time. Venables is still talking like they're trying to make things work and get him into games, but that's mostly to offset the pressure from the okie boosters who are whining about ROI.

The funny part will be when Arnold leaves and pulls his grift with another program for more NIL. I'm hoping it's like Auburn or FSU.

This is the amazing/hilarious part of all of this.  The closest pre-NIL analogy I can come up with is Mack running off Colt McCoy so Garrett Gilbert could start as a freshman.

Did not know the recruiting back story but that makes sense.  That even further goes to show my point being that talent evaluation and assessment are core functions of the job.  They should have been able to stop whatever red flags there were.  They still might have offered him anyway but then to let him basically dictate the offensive coaches and scheme is insane.

Also, the hiring of Littrell was lazy.  They knew Lebby was leaving after he got crossways with the admin over having Art Briles around.  Lebby wasn't winning enough to deal with that baggage.  That's all fine but then they just promoted a guy with a fairly unimpressive resume.  Aside from his stint as a HC at North Texas, he basically has a 15 year resume of unimpressive 1-2 year stints.

I got this text from my brother in law who went to Okie light and hates OU almost as much as I do:

“So we are on Fall Break and I’m hanging out with Everly.  She decided she wanted to go eat at BWW (she likes it, not just me).  So we sit down and I notice a replay of the Red River Rout is playing off in the corner.  Then I see an ou hat in the restaurant.  I asked the lady manager when she walked by if we could put it on the big tv.  She responded “you know it’s not live, right?”  I quickly said, “Sure do!”  She changes the TV comes back in and loudly says, “Got the replay on for you.”   The ou fan is as red as his hat.
I might have to fight my way out of here…”

Dillon Gabriel playing well again tonight... gotta be killin' blOU fans

OU is so turbofucked.
To recap:

Brent Venables is in way over his head. He’s a good position coach, maybe a coordinator

Their QB’s on the roster suck, and they will always suck no matter what.  Could they become good enough to win 8 games by senior year of the rest of the team was good enough?  Ok. Maybe. But they damn sure ain’t an answer

Their fanbase is poverty level and they will be behind us, aggy and on par with Arkansas and LSU in the regional areas they need to win. There is no way they are winning national battles for guys. they don’t have the money

their schedule is brutal. Looks like 5-7 or 6-6 this year. It’s probably even harder next year when it flips home and road.
They are fixing to wander the wilderness for the first time in a generation and it’s absolutely glorious.

Hell yes.  I don’t care what people say about the freshman.  Neither of those QBs are in Norman next year.  They spent 20 years with a horseshoe in their ass, stumbling and falling face first into Heisman quality QBs.  Their time to wander the desert is long overdue. BV forever!!!!

Who needs viagra when you see this trailer park fire

Listened to some of the game on XM on way to Austin.  Local OU call was salty AF.  “We will need to hope for some of that Sooner magic in 2nd half because that’s all we got at this point”.  LOL.

Texas broke blOU...

All they had left to live for this season was the Cotton bowl. They had to have that one. They came out strong, won the first quarter, then got blown out 34-0 the rest of the game.

They have nothing left and they brought nothing to a physical south Carolina team.

Could happen to a nicer bunch of trailer jockeys

Last week on a blOU podcast one of the guys said last week's loss to Texas was rock bottom for BV at blOU.

Nope...

They really are fucked. What advantage do they have going forward over Texas, aggy, LSU, Bama, Auburn, UGA, UF, Tenn, etc.? Some championships from the 1950s? They're going to be duking it out with Arkansas for some semblance of relevance.

Watched a little bit of a blOU postgame podcast...  They were calling their situation

   " John Blake 2.0 " 😋

I'm not sure Venables is going to get another year.

They already want the Indiana coach  😋

Rapid Reaction: Yeah... we're at a loss  😋

When the head coach has broken one side of the ball this badly, there's no reason to expect him to be able to fix it.

They thought they were getting "Bob Stoops 2.0" (successful defensive minded coach with no head coaching experience) and they may very well have ended up with "John Blake 2.0".

I don't recall who all they were considering when they hired Brent Venables, but my recollection is they hurried their decision.

I get why they hired him. They knew Lincoln Riley would never field a defense that could bring them a national championship so it makes sense they would lean toward hiring a defensive coach. Hell, if Bob Stoops could hire innovative offensive coordinators and be successful why couldn't Brent. But I think more importantly they hired Brent because he would be loyal to Oklahoma.

Oklahoma was a destination job. You don't leave Oklahoma unless you're given an opportunity in the NFL. But then Lincoln Riley sneaks off to USC in the middle of the night stealing key pieces of their offense. Oklahoma was stunned and embarrassed by Lincoln's move. I think their psyche was so damaged that they ranked 'loyalty to Oklahoma' as a very high priority for their next coaching hire.

Anyway, not sure if Brent can survive and turn the program around. But my hope is that Oklahoma wanders the desert searching for answers the next decade or so. And as always, OUsux!

In 7 years Seth Littrell went from hottest name to get hired by a big program to getting fired by OU midseason. His college career is over.

IIRC didn't K-State come down to either him or Kleiman?

Seth Littrell’s browser history includes the Google search “where is Tom Herman now?”

They’ll throw a Brinks truck at Marion. I imagine he’ll bring his QB with him too. Venables is in deep shit. It’s understood that OU OC is a straight paycheck job.

A mid season firing is pretty desperate. I’d imagine Joe C put a gun to Venables head after getting blown out on homecoming.

Curious move by Venables. I really don't see how a midseason firing helps with the offense, stability or keeping their current offensive recruits, but the heat coming down on Venables was clearly communicated  as "DO SOMETHING NOW"!

They have certainly fucked up the offensive line recruiting and development and the evaluation on Arnold, but I guess Bedenbaugh is safe, and Venables isn't taking responsible for Arnold cause, hey Lebby is gone.

Please let this set Oklahoma back for many, many years!

OUsux!

I've watched a few different people break down film of their offense.  (Joel Klatt, etc.)  They have no earthly idea what they're doing or trying to do.  With some things, they've never seen it before.

As someone in corporate America, I will tell you it's not odd to find an executive with the education and +20 years experience who has no ides what they're doing.  They sometimes don't understand the basics.  That seems like OU's offense.

They can't afford to fire Venables yet right?  Feels like forcing a guy to fire his new oc after 7 games is the next closest thing.

Also, obligatory, "we slept they coach"

This man right here, he gets it.

I know that Charlie Strong didn't fire Shawn Watson after a disastrous offensive start to the 2015 season and just effectively neutered him, but this season for OU is starting to feel similar to that.  Maybe Joe Castiliogne, Joseph Harroz, and Brent Venables will charter a private jet to Las Vegas to beg Brenna Merrion to be their OC.

They went full aggy and gave him a 6 year extention because Gabriel got them to 10 wins in year 2. What a massive fuck up by Joe C and the rest of the mouth breathing idiots in Norman.

It's like they don't understand that one 10 win season isn't an accomplishment, it's a ruse. Show more then sign an extention.

Also, Arnold just sucks. It's doesn't matter who the OC is, he's just a bad QB. Lincoln Riley couldn't fix him. Letting Gabriel walk to make sure Arnold didn't transfer has to be one of the stupidest things OU has ever done. But I'm glad lol. I hope they wander tree desert for all eternity, just like Arkansas and Nebraska.
