Had a buddy at a practice recently.  Nothing earth shattering here, so take it for what it's worth.  He didn't recall any first team drop.  There may have been some, but none that came to mind.

The 2023 recruiting class has everyone giddy early on. All of the highly rated guys look great. That said, they apparently like what they’re seeing all the way down the line.

If the new infusion of talent allows the OC to get us 7 points per game better than last year, AND the DC gets us just 2 points better, we hoist the Big Trophy.

We have to wait until the spring to really find out, but the talk is as if we have draftable players all over the team right now. I’m expecting a big increase in our getting-players-drafted statistics over the next 3 years. It will be very nice to change that narrative.

Bobby had this to say about 5 stars under Sark so far

Spoiler

If you perused Gerry Hamilton’s article earlier today, Five Freshman Impressing in Fall Camp, you’ll notice that none of them should be a surprise, at least not theoretically.

All of them were ranked among the top 50 players in the country, so expectations should be high on those players.

Yet at the same time, we all know that’s not how recruiting usually works.

Often, a five star doesn’t always get going like a five star should. Not out of the gate. Another player that is ranked lower in the class often makes more waves than the highly ranked prospect.

But this group appears different.

What’s more, it continues a positive development trend overall for Steve Sarkisian.

Let’s think about this:

Below are the “Five Stars” landed by Steve Sarkisian at Texas prior to the 2023 recruiting class.

 Xavier Worthy
 Ja’tavion Sanders
 Kelvin Banks
 DJ Campbell
 Terrance Brooks
 Quinn Ewers

All six of them are in line to start, if not star, this season.

The commonality of Five Stars, when they are recruited, isn’t necessarily their high school production as much as it is their high-end talent. At Texas and for Steve Sarkisian, the idea that high-end talent is becoming more productive for Texas is a sign that a team’s ceiling is only going up.

I went to fact check and hit him with an "akshually..." but those are actually all the guys that were 5 stars either by the On3 rankings or the On3 composite. All have played and shown promise.

Let's take out Ewers and only look at Worthy, Sanders, Banks, Campbell, and Brooks since those are the guys that signed with us out of high school and entered the program as freshmen. Sanders is the only one that didn't play notable non-ST snaps as a freshman. 2/5 were immediate starters (one each season) and another 2/5 were in the two-deep their first year. 5/5 will start this year and at least 3/5 will be all-conference. Those three will be early NFL draft picks after their third years. Campbell and Brooks could conceivably join them.

Through his first three cycles, Sark has increased the number of 5 stars he signed by one each year: two in '21, three in '22, four in '23. Let's look at the '23 class. 3/4 are likely contributors while Manning's snap count is TBD and Hill is a likely starter (imo). The rate of early contributors remains high. Meanwhile, there is again one starter even though the total number of 5 stars increases (1/2 started in '21, 1/3 in '22, 1/4 in '23). That's also a good sign.

Those that are drinking the crootin koolaid will say that Sark might continue the +1 trend in the '24 class. Simmons, Baker, McKinley, Wingo, and Black currently qualify and Mack will earn his fifth star in the On3 rankings if he holdings onto his #19 spot with them. It's premature to believe that we will land five of those, but four would be a good haul.

The hit rate on five stars being early contributors, stars, NFL guys, etc. at this level isn't sustainable; Sark is quite literally batting 1.000 (if I might be a bit presumptuous on Arch Manning's behalf - but also he's a three star with a different last name so we don't have to count him anyway).  The hit rate for five stars should be high, of course, but not having a single miss our of nine is impressive. That speaks to the mental evals, at least in part.

If Sark does ultimately get this thing turned around in the next couple years, this staff's ability to land enough top talent early on and maximize that talent will be a big reason why. A couple lucky bounces on the trail helps of course. But once you've got the ball rolling, you don't need luck anymore.

The biggest concern with this team is that they have a head coach that hasn’t won Jack. But there’s dudes who have in their respective coaching roles.

There is not a guy that we could lose and this go in the shitter. No, it wouldn’t be ideal to lose your QB or Banks, but it shouldn’t fall apart without them. If we lose them, we’re still more talented than our conference opponents.

You can the practice reports with a grain of salt, but competition in practice sounds as though it’s breeding achievement over contentment.

The youngest guys just need to do thing their thing because the frosh aren’t relied on to carry the day. Hill is in a place where he can screwup and you might not even notice because of the maturity around him. There’s no covering for other dudes. You do your job or you don’t play.

The defensive staff legit believes they have hit on everybody in the 23. If you ever get to hear Choate talk about the Hawaii linebacker it’s as if he is the next Ray Lewis.

Sorrell and Ford whose hypothetical injuries could lead us towards the shitter, but I generally agree it wouldn't get that bad.

If Sorrell goes down I think that we can pivot to more three man fronts. The DL room is deep and flexible. We already heard about Collins at DE in the first scrimmage. There's also a couple guys that might be able to unexpectedly step up into that spot (Finkley, Bledsoe).

If Ford goes down it would really depend on our opponents during his absence. We should be good enough to tread water against most of the schedule. I also think pretty highly of Bush and reports on Lefau are positive. A couple of our opponents could abuse Bush's limitations and Lefau's inexperience though.

Sounds like putting Collins outside more is going to help him. Ready to see this new defense with PK fully unleashed and his guys everywhere. We have killers at every level on D.

Every team has guys it doesn’t want to lose. With respect to Sorrell, he was nobody at this time last year. It’s not like he was all world coming out of high school either. Point being guys step up every year to give you some positive surprises. If he goes down, we should get some of level of production out of that replacement. That’s where we’re becoming so much better from a depth perspective. We’re closer to Bama/Georgia/Ohio State than we are to the Big 12 teams in the natural talent/depth area.

On LB, you should feel comfortable with the guys in front and behind. Blackwell has made some plays. Gbenda actually has too. Maturity and experience should be theirs. I lean more towards what seems to he the NFL way here. We will find guys to make tackles. We need to square up the front end and the back end.

I think there is a required specificity to make it a "pegging gangbang". If I say I am ordering curry do I just assume its a level 5 spicy yellow curry or would I want to be specific when ordering?

I had the chance to talk to a buddy who has been to multiple practices and every person on this thread except the clown that thinks NFL scouts make a bunch of money would trust this buddy's unvarnished takes. And he's not prone, ever, to positive hyperbole with UT football.

-This is a 9-3/10-2 regular season team. If Sarkisian lets these guys fall apart to anything under 8-4, they should fire him before Thanksgiving. This team has more talent than anyone in the Big 12 this year. Give me TCU's WRs and someone else's kicker, and I'm not sure what other group is outpacing what Texas has. TCU vs Texas at WR might be a wash anyway.

-Bijan gets all of the hype, but he's better this year than anything we saw last year. It's hard to believe. He could be starting in the NFL this season.

-The backfield overall is just terrific.

-You're going to be better at TE and it isn't even close. 1-4 at that spot are better than anything they've had out there since I can remember.

-Thompson is going to drop some passes, but he's also going to catch a few that are behind the defense. He could wind up with 6tds this year averaging 50 yards/td and also average 2 drops/game.

-Cain is not going to be a star but he is going to give you consistent catches. Milton has great hands but the injuries have killed his athleticism. He's an asset though and Sarkisian will use him right.

-Ewers is going to be awesome. He's going to throw a bunch of what-the-fuck picks trying to figure out where he can whip it and where he can't, and he'll remember those for about as long as it takes for him to get to the sideline. In one side of the mullet and out the other in no time.

-They didn't miss on one guy on the OL and they know it. There will be 3 freshmen OL starters super soon and another is probable this year. Robertson is physical and will be a good center if his shoulders hold up. Agbo and Neto are more physical than they feared. Williams needs a little work in pass pro but is the starter at RT soon. Banks is not a freshmen and Hutson is the guy they're really surprised by, because he's better than they assumed and is a starter already.

-Kicker is a major fucking problem.

-The concerns about the DTs are overblown. They're swearing they're going to let them play upfield and if that is the case, the DTs are above average. Broughton can't stop the run and positivity around him feels like bullshit to press the other guys to up their game for snaps.

-EDGE is the biggest problem on defense. There should be less concern about it. This was not explained in detail to me as to why I should be less concerned about the position.

-LB is much improved. No studs, but they'll be a hell of a lot better than the mess last year. The transfer is tiny dynamite.

-Secondary looks really good but could be zero sum with the fact that they know a lot of the plays coming at them and Ewers does not give a fuck in practice about trying to thread the needle.

-If they play Bama tough and show sparks on offense, they could go on to be a team that gets substantially better as the season goes on. Traylor will have UTSA playing violently and that comes off of Bama, so Tech is the biggest game of the year. Win the first conference game to go 3-1, then beat a lost WVU team at home and figure out what OU is made of in Dallas.

-This staff is using outlets to send signals to players on a daily basis.

If you look at that breakdown, it was pretty fucking accurate. I’m kind of amazed.

Outside of Cain not playing in games the way he did in practice, Thompson not getting enough in-game reps to achieve anything and Christian Jones just being better than anyone expected, that was pretty accurate shit. Splitting hairs beyond that.

In any event, it’s the same concern this year but from a different practice attendee - this team is an 11-1 regular season team if the main guy can keep his shit together.

My good friend who passed on the stuff from last year will be at a few in the future and I’ll pass stuff on. I’m attending one soon myself. Interested in seeing how much I believe personally.

Nope. This team’s floor is too high for there to be any heat. I’ve said this consistently on here for years - Sarkisian is getting a fourth year. There is too much turnover fatigue. They love the roster work that has happened now and everybody really likes the guy. The staff is solid and the lockerroom isn’t full of a bunch of shitheads.

Sarkisian has done everything right but win big so far and it’s only been two years. Anyone saying Sarkisian could be on the hot seat is an outsider, or knows something we don’t about off the field issues, or they can see the future and know that somehow this team staggers to 7-5 or something.
